1901 During a fluke snowstorm in Cleveland, Ted Lewis becomes the first Boston American (Red Sox) hurler to throw a shutout when he blanks the Tribe at League Park, 5-0. The 28-year-old right-hander from Wales will become better known later in life as the president of Massachusetts State College and the University of New Hampshire.

1903 The court arraigned the entire Schenectady Frog Alleys squad for playing baseball on a Sunday after the team hosted the Albany Senators yesterday in a New York State League contest played at Island Park. When the jury acquits Captain Ben Ellis, who was the plaintiff of a test case for the charges against the Class D team, county officials discharged the detained players for violating blue laws.

1906 The Americans (Red Sox) halt a twenty-game losing streak, with 19 of the losses occurring at home, when Jesse Tannehill goes the distance, blanking Chicago at the Huntington Avenue Grounds, 3-0. Boston will finish last in the American League with a woeful 49-105 record.
1910 In the nightcap of a twin bill in Chicago, Jack Coombs' scoreless streak ends at 53 innings during a 5-2 loss in a game shortened by darkness. The A's right-hander will throw 13 shutouts in 38 games he starts and will finish the season with a 31-9 record and an ERA of 1.30.

1917 Trailing 5-0 at the start of the bottom of the ninth at League Park, the Indians come back to beat the Yankees, 6-5. After Tris Speaker steals home on an 0-2 count to tie the score, New York hurler Alan Russell throws the next pitch to the backstop, plating Bill Wambsganss with the winning run in Cleveland's incredible walk-off victory.

1919 Casey Stengel, traded by the Dodgers in the off-season to the Pirates, calls time and steps out of the batter's box to give the razzing Ebbets Field fans the 'bird.' The Pittsburgh right fielder doffs his hat, allowing a sparrow to fly out, much to the amazement and amusement of the fans.

​

1922 After being called out for trying to stretch a single into a double, Babe Ruth throws dirt into the umpire's eye, goes after a heckler in the stands, and finishes his tirade by standing on the dugout roof calling the crowd "yellow" cowards. These actions will result in a one-game suspension and a $200 fine and will cost the 'Bambino' his Yankee captaincy, a position he has held for less than a week.
1923 Crossing the plate for the 1,741st time, Ty Cobb surpasses Honus Wagner's record for most runs scored in a career. The 'Georgia Peach' will tally 2,245 runs during his 24-year tenure in the major leagues, a mark that stands until 2001 when Rickey Henderson breaks the record.

1935 At Forbes Field, Boston Braves outfielder Babe Ruth hits three homers and a single in the team's 11-7 loss to the Pirates in Pittsburgh. The Sultan of Swat's seventh-inning solo shot off Gary Bush, a blast that clears the ballpark's roof, will be the Bambino's 714th and final home run.

1937 Future Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane's career ends after Yankee hurler Bump Hadley beans him with a 3-1 inside fastball. Near-death at first, the Tiger catcher/manager will spend six weeks in the hospital and returns to the team only as its skipper.

​

1941 In a 10-3 victory over New York at Yankee Stadium, Red Sox left fielder Ted Williams goes 4-for-5 to raise his batting average to over .400 for the first time this season. The 'Splendid Splinter' will finish the campaign batting .406.

​

1945 Leon Culberson completes a rare unassisted double play in the Red Sox' 5-0 loss to the Browns at Fenway Park. After making a running catch of a short fly to center, the Boston outfielder races into the infield and steps on second base to double up Vern Stephens.
1951 At Shibe Park, the much-heralded Giant rookie Willie Mays makes his major league debut against the Phillies. The 20-year-old outfielder, who hit .477 in 35 games with the Minneapolis Millers before being called up, goes hitless in five trips to the plate but makes two outstanding defensive plays to contribute to New York's 8-5 victory.

1953 En route to a 10-3 Braves victory over Cincinnati at County Stadium, Max Surkont establishes a major league record by striking out eight consecutive batters, a feat not matched until future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver mows down ten straight San Diego hitters in 1970. After his streak reaches seven, the Milwaukee moundsman endures a thirty-five-minute rain delay before getting Andy Seminick, leading off in the fifth inning, to look at a third strike to set the mark.

1960 At Busch Stadium, George Crowe's two-out ninth-inning pinch-hit home run to deep right field gives the Cardinals a 5-3 walk-off victory over Milwaukee. The round-tripper is "Big George's" major league-leading 11th career homer coming off the bench, breaking the mark he shared with Smoky Burgess and Gus Zernial when the season began.

1968 Tigers right fielder Al Kaline suffers a broken arm when struck by a pitch thrown by Lew Krausse in the top of the sixth inning in the team's 2-1 victory over the A's at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The 33-year-old future Hall of Famer will miss 37 games for the eventual World Champions.
1979 The umpires stop the game when Pirates left fielder Bill Robinson loses Joel Youngblood's fly ball in the mist at Shea Stadium. Due to the fog, the 11-inning contest ends after a 73-minute delay in a 3-3 tie.
1981 Joining Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, and Hank Aaron, Carl Yastrzemski becomes the fourth major leaguer to appear in 3,000 games. Yaz makes it memorable by scoring the winning run in the Red Sox' 8-7 victory over Cleveland at Fenway Park.

1982 Future Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins reaches the 3,000 strikeout plateau when he whiffs Gary Templeton in the third frame of the Cubs' 2-1 loss to San Diego at Jack Murphy Stadium. Next season, the 39 year-old Canadian-born right-hander will finish his 19-year major league career with a total of 3,192 K's in 4,500.2 innings.

1983 In the third inning of an eventual 6-0 loss to the Braves at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, Pirates' starter Jim Bibby (4) and reliever Jim Winn (3) combine to walk seven consecutive batters to tie a major league mark. In 1909, Senators' southpaw hurler Dolly Gray, who will win only 15 games of his 66 career decisions during his three big league seasons, established the dubious record in his rookie year.
1989 The Mariners trade their ace, Mark Langston, along with minor leaguer Mike Campbell to the Expos for Brian Holman, Gene Harris, and 6' 10" southpaw Randy Johnson. The left-handed 'Big Unit' will become a mainstay in Seattle's rotation for a decade, compiling a 130-74 (.637) record, and next season will throw the first no-hitter in franchise history.

1998 Cardinals' first baseman Mark McGwire becomes the first player in major league history to hit 25 home runs before June 1 when he connects off John Thomson in the bottom of the first frame for the team's lone run in the team's 6 1 loss to the Rockies at Busch Stadium. Last season, Mariner outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. hit 24 home runs before the sixth month of the year.
1999 The Diamondbacks tie a 68-year-old major league record when their catcher, Damian Miller, starts three double plays. Arizona's 3-2 victory over San Diego at Bank One Ballpark also features two 100-mph pitches thrown by southpaw Randy Johnson.
2000 The Devil Rays release 35-year-old Dwight Gooden (2-3, 6.63) after acquiring the 1985 Cy Young Award winner from the Astros on April 13 for cash considerations, allowing the right-hander to pitch for his hometown team. Next month, Doc signs as a free agent with the Yankees, posting a 4-2 record for the Bronx Bombers in the final season of his 16-year tenure in the major leagues.
2001 At Fenway Park, Hideo Nomo strikes out 14 en route to a 4-0 one-hitter against Toronto. The 32-year-old Japanese right-hander faces one batter over the minimum of 27, yielding a leadoff double to Shannon Stewart in the fourth inning.

2001 Kerry Wood gives up only one hit, a seventh-inning leadoff single to Mark Loretta, in the Cubs' 1-0 victory over Milwaukee. The 24-year-old right-hander strikes out 14 batters in the Wrigley Field gem.

2002 With four homers on Thursday (5/23), one on Friday (5/24), and two more on Saturday (5/25), Shawn Green becomes the first major leaguer to hit seven round-trippers in three games. The Dodger outfielder's nine big flies in a week also break a National League record, established by Ralph Kiner with eight and tied by Ted Kluszewski and Nate Colbert.

2002 Getting his 3,509th K, Diamondback southpaw Randy Johnson passes Walter Johnson to become seventh on the all-time career strikeout list. After fanning Shawn Green in the first to catch the 'Big Train,' Dodger outfielder Brian Jordan swings and misses a 2-2 pitch in the second inning to become the Big Unit's historical victim.

 

2002 The YES cable network hires former major league pitcher David Cone as a part-time television analyst. The assignment also includes serving as a studio analyst on selected pregame and postgame shows, covering five games for the Staten Island Yankees (Class A), and being a WCBS announcer for the June 14 Yankees-Mets game.
2003 Buddy Groom throws two-thirds of a scoreless eighth inning in the Orioles' 13-10 victory over Texas at The Ballpark in Arlington. The outing is the 38 year-old southpaw's 638th major league contest with zero plate appearances, surpassing Bob Stanley's mark for the most games pitched without coming to bat.
2005 In a game against the Orioles, the Mariners starting battery consists of a pair of veterans when southpaw Jamie Moyer and backstop Pat Borders appear in the same lineup. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the age of the players marks the first time in major league history that the starting pitcher and catcher for a team has consisted of two players 42 years or older.
2006 At Tokyo's Jingu Stadium, California-born Rick Guttormson becomes the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter in interleague play in Japan. The former Padres minor league pitcher of the year holds the Golden Eagles hitless as the Yakult Swallows beat Rakuten, 6-0.
2006 After having a 6-0 lead over the Tigers in the first inning, the Royals lose, 13-8, when the bullpen gives up eight runs in the last two innings. The defeat is the 13th consecutive loss for Kansas City.
2007 Mark Reynolds, batting cleanup for the first time in his brief career, goes 5-for-5 in the Diamondbacks' 13-3 victory over the Astros. The Arizona Rookie third baseman falls a double shy of the cycle, hitting a home run in his last at-bat, which barely clears the right-field fence at Chase Field.
2008 Former major league pitcher Geremi Gonzalez, signed by the Cubs as an amateur free agent in 1991, is killed by lightning standing on a dock in western Venezuela. The 33-year-old right-hander, who compiled a 30-35 record, also hurled for the Devil Rays, Red Sox, Mets, and the Brewers before being released by Milwaukee in 2006.
2009 The Indians, trailing by ten runs in the fourth, rally to beat the Rays, 11-10. Victor Martinez's walk-off, two-out, two-run single off Jason Isringhausen in the bottom of the seven-run ninth inning puts the finishing touch on the incredible comeback at Progressive Field.

2011 Paul Splittorff, the winningest pitcher in Royals history, dies at 64 of complications from skin cancer. The likable left-hander became a popular broadcaster for the team, serving as an analyst for the FOX Sports affiliate in Kansas City.
2011 Jo-Jo Reyes makes his 28th straight start without recording a victory, tying the major league record shared by Cliff Curtis (1910-11, Braves, Cubs, Phillies) and Matt Keough (1978-79, A's). The Blue Jays southpaw, who leaves the game trailing 5-0 to the Yankees after just three innings of work, hasn't won a start since June 13, 2008.
2011 In the 12th inning of an eventual 7-6 loss to Florida, the Giants lose catcher Buster Posey for the season after a brutal collision at home plate with Scott Cousins, who scores the go-ahead run. An MRI will confirm last season's Rookie of the Year has a fractured left fibula and three torn ligaments in his left ankle and will need season-ending surgery to repair the damage.
2011 Yankee closer Mariano Rivera becomes the first pitcher to appear in 1,000 games for the same team. The 41-year-old Panamanian right-hander, who has compiled 572 saves and 75 wins during his 17 seasons with the Bronx Bombers, is closing in on the all-time saves record established by Trevor Hoffman with 601.

2013 Angel Pagan becomes the first Giant to hit a walk-off, inside-the-park home run since Bill Terry accomplished the feat at the Polo Grounds in 1931. The center fielder's tenth-inning, two-run round-tripper gives San Francisco a dramatic 6-5 victory over Colorado.

2015 Jeremy Guthrie becomes the second starter since 1914 to give up 11 earned runs without recording at least one out in the second inning when he gives up nine hits, including four homers, and issues four walks in the Royals’ 14-1 loss to New York at Yankee Stadium. In 2007, Astros right-hander Jason Jennings allowed 11 earned runs while lasting just two-thirds in a contest against the Padres at Houston’s Minute Maid Park.
2017 Drew Pomeranz, who whiffs 11 batters in six innings, and four Red Sox relievers tie a major league record, combining to strike out 20 batters in the team's 6-2 win over the Rangers at Fenway Park. After Nomar Mazara strikes out but reaches first base on the strike-three wild pitch, Boston's closer Craig Kimberly proceeds to mow down the next three hitters, two swinging and one looking, to record four strikeouts in the final frame to equal the mark.

2019 En route to their 19–4 blowout of the Blue Jays, the Padres hit a franchise-record seven home runs, breaking their previous mark of six established in 1998 against the Reds Cinergy Field. The Rogers Centre contest, in which the Friars scored multiple runs in seven different innings, features Wil Myers (2), Hunter Renfroe (2), Ian Kindler, Eric Hosmer, and Austin Hedges also going deep to set the new team standard.

• • 1906 - Jesse Tannehill snaps the Boston Pilgrims' 20-game losing streak (19 at home, both A.L. records) with a 3-0 win over the White Sox. Both Boston teams will finish last, while both Chicago teams finish first. It's the first time two cities have had two winners and two cellar-dwellers.
  • 1919 - Ever-popular Casey Stengel, now a Pirate, is good-naturedly applauded when he comes to bat in the seventh inning at Brooklyn. He doffs his cap in response and, to everyone's delight, releases a sparrow he had hidden there.
  • 1922 - Babe Ruth is suspended one day and fined $200 for throwing dirt on an ump after being called out on a play at second base, then going into the stands after a heckler. He is also stripped of his title as team captain.
  • 1935 - Babe Ruth has a last hurrah, hitting three home runs at Pittsburgh. The final one, the last of his 714 career home runs, is the first to clear the right field grandstand at Forbes Field and is measured at 600 feet.
  • 1937 - After hitting a home run against the Yankees in his prior at bat, Mickey Cochrane suffers a skull fracture from a Bump Hadley pitch. Coach Del Baker will run the team for the hospitalized Detroit leader, who will never return to active play.
  • 1941 - Ted Williams raises his batting average over .400 for the first time during the season. His run to be the first since Bill Terry in 1930 to exceed the magic number will be marked in newspapers throughout the season, although it will often give way to the batting streak by Joe DiMaggio.
  • 1951 - Giants rookie Willie Mays, who was hitting .477 with Minneapolis, goes 0-for-5 in his major league debut against the Phils.
  • 1953 - Max Surkont of the Braves fans eight Reds in a row, establishing a new major league mark, as the Braves win 10-3 in the second game of a doubleheader. Surkont strikes out seven in a row before rain delays the game, then strikes out Andy Seminick to start the fifth inning. Surkont fans 13 on the way to his sixth straight win.
  • 1960 - George Crowe's major league-record 11th pinch-hit home run, off Don McMahon, gives the Cardinals a 5-3 win over the Braves. Crowe began the season tied with Smoky Burgess and Gus Zernial in career pinch home runs.
  • 1964 - Ground is broken for a new stadium in St. Louis.
  • 1975 - Cleveland's Dennis Eckersley, in his first major league start, hurls a three-hit shutout in beating Oakland 6-0.
  • 1981 - Carl Yastrzemski plays in his 3,000th major league game, scoring the winning run in Boston's 8-7 triumph over Cleveland. Yaz joins Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, and Hank Aaron as the only major leaguers to appear in 3,000 games.
  • 1982 - Fergie Jenkins of the Cubs fans Garry Templeton in the third inning of a 2-1 loss to the Padres to become the seventh pitcher in major league history to record 3,000 career strikeouts.
  • 1984 - The Red Sox trade pitcher Dennis Eckersley and minor leaguer Mike Brumley to the Cubs for veteran Bill Buckner, who had been benched in Chicago in favor of Leon Durham but will immediately become Boston's starting first baseman.
  • 1989 - After shopping him for several months, the Mariners finally trade star pitcher Mark Langston to Montreal for pitchers Randy Johnson, Brian Holman, and Gene Harris.

1916 In Boston, Giants outfielder Benny Kauff is picked off first base three times by Lefty Tyler. The center fielder's miscues don't hurt the team when New York reels off its 14th consecutive road victory, beating the Braves, 12-1.

1925 In Chicago, Tiger outfielder Ty Cobb becomes the first player to collect 1,000 career extra-base hits when he doubles in Detroit's 8-1 win over the White Sox. The 'Georgia Peach,' who surpassed Honus Wagner's record of 993 earlier in the season, will finish his 24-year major league career with 1,139.

1929 Coming off the bench, Giants' Pat Crawford and Les Bell of the Braves blast grand slams in consecutive innings, marking the first time two pinch-hit four-run homers occur in the same game. Crawford goes yard off Socks Seibold in the sixth inning, and Bell takes Carl Hubbell long in the seventh in New York's 15-8 victory over Boston in the Polo Grounds.

1930 During the nightcap of a twin bill, Joe Sewell strikes out twice against White Sox southpaw Pat Caraway in Cleveland's 5-2 victory over Chicago. The Indians' infielder will be fanned a total of only three times in his 353 at-bats this season.

​

1937 Appearing as pinch-hitters, Cleveland's Billy Sullivan and Bruce Campbell both homer, marking the first time two batters on the same team hit pinch round-trippers in an American League game. The off-the-bench home run heroics prove to be the difference when the Indians beat Philadelphia at Shibe Park, 8-6.

​

1947 The largest crowd ever to attend a single game in baseball history occurs when 74,747 fans watch the Yankees beat Boston, 9-3, in a Monday evening tilt at the Bronx ballpark. The previous mark was set in 1932 at Cleveland's spacious Municipal Stadium with a Sunday afternoon game attracting 73,592 patrons to witness Philadelphia's 1-0 victory over the hometown Indians, a contest that takes only an hour and fifty minutes to complete.

 

1953 Six years after Jackie Robinson makes his major league debut, the Cardinals sign their first black player when Fresno State College slugger Len Tucker agrees to a $3,000 professional contract. The 23-year-old speedy outfielder plays exceptionally well in the minors for Peoria, Saskatoon, and Modesto but never gets called up to St. Louis.

1956 Reds starter John Klippstein, Hershell Freeman, and Joe Black combine to hurl 9.2 innings of hitless ball in a losing effort to Milwaukee. Frank Torre's 11th inning walk-off single scoring Hank Aaron is the difference in the 2-1 defeat at County Stadium.

​

1957 Cubs rookie Dick Drott establishes a franchise record when he strikes out 15 batters en route to a complete-game victory over Milwaukee at Wrigley Field. The 20-year-old right-hander's mark, accomplished in his seventh major league start, will be matched by Burt Hooton (1971) and Rick Sutcliffe (1984) and will remain the standard for a nine-inning game until Kerry Wood's 20-K performance in 1998.

1959 At Comiskey Park, another of Bill Veeck's stunts features the return of 3-feet 7 inch Eddie Gaedel along with three other little people. Arriving by helicopter, the quartet, dressed as Martians greets Nellie Fox and Luis Aparicio near second base, giving the diminutive infielders toy ray guns to help the keystone combo in their struggle with giant earthlings

1959 Pirates' hurler Harvey Haddix pitches 12 perfect innings but loses 1-0 to the Braves in the 13th inning. The heart-breaking winning run scores on a Don Hoak error, a sacrifice, a walk, and a two-bagger by Joe Adcock.

1959 The Yankees deal Jerry Lumpe, Tom Sturdivant, and right-hander Johnny Kucks to the A's in exchange for Hector Lopez and Ralph Terry. In three years, Terry will become the second Bronx Bomber hurler to pitch a shutout in the seventh game of a World Series, with the departed Kucks being the first in franchise history to blank opponents in Game 7 of the Fall Classic.
1964 In front of a meager crowd of 2,503 fans at Wrigley Field, the visiting Mets set a franchise record for runs scored when the team pummels the Cubs, 19-1. New York's 25-year-old first baseman Dick Smith, batting leadoff, becomes the first player in franchise history to get five hits in a game, nearly 20% of his season total of 21 when he collects a double, a triple, and three singles.

 

1976 Ken Brett's no-hit bid ends with two outs in the ninth when White Sox third baseman Jorge Orta hopes Jerry Remy's slow roller will go foul. The ball stays fair, and the no-hitter is lost, but the southpaw, who tosses ten innings of two-hit ball, gets the victory when the Pale Hose beat California in the 11th, 1-0.

The decision marks the southpaw's 166th and last victory of his 15-year career, all with Kansas City, the most in franchise history.

1990 Don Baylor, who will be the only Angel to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award [1979] until Mike Trout cops the honor in 2014, is inducted into the team's Hall of Fame. The seasoned veteran averaged 23 home runs and 87 RBI while batting .262 in six seasons for the California team.

1990 The Phillies retire Mike Schmidt's uniform #20, honoring the third baseman who played his entire 18-year Hall of Fame career with Philadelphia. During his tenure with the team. At the time of his retirement in 1989, the 12-time All-Star was the Phillies' all-time leader in games played, at-bats, plate appearances, runs scored, home runs, RBI, walks, and total bases.

1993 Carlos Martinez hits a fly ball to Jose Canseco that caroms off the Ranger outfielder's head over the fence for a home run. The fourth inning solo homer will prove to be the difference when the Indians edge Texas at Cleveland Stadium, 7-6.

1996 Bobby Chouinard becomes the first player from Manila to appear in a major league game. The A's hurler pitches five innings, giving up eight hits and five earned runs in a 6-1 loss to the Orioles at Camden Yards.
1997 Frank Thomas, Harold Baines, and Robin Ventura hit consecutive home runs in the eighth inning of the White Sox' 12-1 win over Milwaukee. Chad Kreuter adds another round-tripper in the seven-run frame, making Chicago the 16th team in American League history to hit four homers in one inning.
1997 For the first time in twenty years, two inside-the-park homers are hit in the same inning when Sammy Sosa of the Cubs and the Pirates infielder Tony Womack both circle the bases for round-trippers five minutes apart in the sixth frame of the Cubs' 2-1 victory at Three Rivers Stadium. Ranger teammates Bump Wills and Toby Harrah hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs on consecutive pitches at Yankee Stadium in 1977.

2000 At Yankee Stadium, the game against Boston stops when a fan falls from the upper deck, remaining motionless for five minutes on the screen behind home plate. The 24-year-old man suddenly sits up, raises both arms high, and is promptly arrested on a disorderly conduct charge.

2002 Royals reliever Cory Bailey becomes the first pitcher in a dozen years to win both ends of a doubleheader when the team sweeps the Rangers at Kauffman Stadium, 7-5 and 9-8. In 1989, David Wells accomplished the feat for the Blue Jays in a twin bill against the Angels.
2004 In the Pirates' 11-8 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium, Daryle Ward hits for the cycle, collecting a two-run double in the first, a run-scoring triple in the fourth, a three-run homer in the fifth, and a single in the ninth. The Pirates' first baseman and his dad Gary become the first father-son combination in major league history to hit for the cycle. The elder Ward accomplished the feat 24 years ago with Minnesota.

2006 Brandon Webb becomes the first Diamondback to start the season 8-0. The 27-year-old right-hander, who signed a $19.5 million, four-year contract in the offseason, beats the Reds at Great American Ball Park, 3-0, for his second consecutive shutout.
2006 Derek Jeter, with a dribbler up the third-base line for an infield single off KC's Scott Elarton, becomes the eighth player in Yankee history to collect 2,000 career hits. The 31-year-old shortstop joins Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Don Mattingly, Babe Ruth, and Bernie Williams in reaching the milestone.

2008 At Citizens Bank Park, Phillies' second baseman Chase Utley homers and drives in six runs in the 20-5 rout of the Rockies. Philadelphia bats around three times, including two six-run innings, during their 19-hit attack against Colorado.
2011 Tossing a scoreless 19th inning in the Phillies' 5-4 win over Cincinnati at Citizens Bank Park, Wilson Valdez becomes the first position player to record a major league victory since Brent Mayne accomplished the feat in 2000 with Colorado. The 33 year-old second baseman also became the first person to start as a fielder and then be credited with the win as a pitcher since Babe Ruth took the mound on October 1, 1921, after starting the game in left field.

2016 Hall of Famer Wade Boggs became the tenth Red Sox player to have his number retired. The third baseman's #26 joins 1 (Bobby Doerr), 4 (Joe Cronin), 6 (Johnny Pesky), 8 (Carl Yastrzemski), 9 (Ted Williams), 14 (Jim Rice), 27 (Carlton Fisk), 45 (Pedro Martinez), and 42 (Jackie Robinson) on Fenway's historic right-field facade.

• • 1925 - In Detroit's 8-1 win over the White Sox, Ty Cobb becomes the first to collect 1,000 career extra-base hits. He will finish with 1,139.
  • 1930 - Joe Sewell strikes out twice facing lefthander Pat Caraway of the White Sox. It is the last time the Indians third baseman will fan this season, striking out only three times in 353 at-bats.
  • 1946 - At 2-for-42 and hitting .048 for the season, Mel Ott stops playing and only manages the Giants.
  • 1950 - The Athletics make some changes. Connie Mack's son, Earle, who had been assistant manager, assumes the duties of chief scout. Earle, who had hoped to succeed his father as manager, is replaced by Jimmy Dykes. Mickey Cochrane is named general manager.
  • 1959 - In a singular performance, Harvey Haddix of the Pirates pitches a perfect game against Milwaukee for 12 innings, only to lose in the 13th. Felix Mantilla opens the last inning by reaching base on an error. A sacrifice and an intentional walk to Hank Aaron brings up Joe Adcock, who hits one out of the park in right-center field for an apparent 3-0 victory. Aaron leaves the field, and Adcock passes him on the basepaths. Both are called out as Mantilla scores. Lew Burdette goes all the way for his eighth win, scattering 12 hits.
  • 1976 - In a scoreless game in Anaheim, Chicago's Ken Brett has a no-hitter with two out in the ninth when California's Jerry Remy tops a slow roller down the third base line. Third baseman Jorge Orta lets the ball roll and, in a controversial ruling, it is scored a hit, though many thought it ought to be ruled an error. Brett gives up a hit in the tenth to ex-Sox Bill Melton but wins the game 1-0 in 11 innings.
  • 1993 - Jose Canseco can't be accused of not using his head by anyone in Cleveland. The Texas right fielder drifts back to line up a long drive by Carlos Martinez and, when he turns his head to take a look at the wall, the ball skims off his glove, hits his head and bounces over the fence for a home run.
  • 1997 - Two inside-the-park home runs are hit in a span of five minutes on Memorial Day in Pittsburgh. First, Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa touches them all in the top of the sixth inning, then Tony Womack flies around the bases in 13 seconds in the bottom of the inning. The Cubs hold off the Bucs, 2-1, but it is the first time in 21 years that two N.L. players hit inside-the-parkers in the same game.
