Although the moniker has been around since 1890, the Orphans, also known as the Colts and White Stockings, will not officially adopt the Cubs as its new name until 1907.

The 1986 Rookie of the Year and 1988 MVP of the American League ends his 17-year career with 462 home runs while batting .266, playing with five different clubs in the Junior Circuit.

      • 1902 - The nickname Cubs is coined by the Chicago Daily News, when an unbylined column notes that, Frank Selee will devote his strongest efforts on the team work of the new Cubs this year. In time, the Cubs will replace the Colts as the nickname for Chicago's N.L. club.
      • 1948 - Hank Greenberg, who tormented the Indians for most of his career as a member of the Tigers, is hired as Cleveland's farm club director by Bill Veeck.
      • 1986 - Major league baseball's Rules Committee votes to change the designated hitter rule for the World Series, allowing a DH to be used in all games played in the A.L. club's home park. Since 1976, the DH had been used in all games in alternating years.
      • 1987 - In what will turn out to be an extremely lopsided trade, the Mets send catcher Ed Hearn and minor leaguers Rick Anderson and Mauro Gozzo to the Royals in exchange for David Cone and minor leaguer Chris Jelic. Cone will blossom into one of the N.L.'s better starters, posting a 20-3 record for the Mets in 1988.

1966 Refusing to report to spring training, Dodger pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale begin their joint holdout, asking for a $1 million, three-year contract, to be divided equally between them. The deal, equivalent to an annual salary of $167,000 for each hurler, will make them the best-paid baseball players, easily surpassing Willie Mays' $125,000 yearly paycheck with the Giants

1986 Joaquin Andujar, Dale Berra, Enos Cabell, Keith Hernandez, Jeffrey Leonard, Dave Parker, and Lonnie Smith, known as the 'Cocaine Seven,' are severely disciplined by Commissioner Peter Ueberroth for their "prolonged pattern of drug use" and the distribution of drugs to others in the sport. The players are suspended for a full season but will be allowed to play when they agree to donate ten percent of their base salaries to drug-related community service in the city they played, submit to random drug testing, and do one hundred hours of community service.
1989 Red Schoendienst, who spent 19 years in the major leagues and managed the Cardinals to a world championship in 1967, and Al Barlick, a 29-year veteran umpire, best known for his booming voice, are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. The pair joins last month's BBWAA selections Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski.
