1894 At Chicago's Lake Front Park, Quaker (Phillies) fly chaser Jack Manning hits three home runs in an 11-7 loss to the White Stockings. The Philadelphia outfielder is the first player in franchise history to accomplish the feat.

1905 Christy Mathewson throws a shutout against Philadelphia in Game 1 of the World Series, 3-0. The Giants hurler will blank the A's twice more during the Fall Classic.

​

1906 In a snowy West Side Park, the first one-city World Series opens in Chicago. Nick Altrock outduels Three-Finger Brown, giving the White Sox a 2-1 victory over the heavily favored Cubs.

​

1907 In Game 2 of the World Series played at Chicago's West Side Grounds, Tigers third baseman Bill Coughlin tags out Jimmy Slagle, leading off the base, using the hidden ball trick. The Cubs center fielder is the first victim deceived about a ball's location during the Fall Classic.


1909 Ty Cobb's steal of home highlights the Tigers' 7-2 victory over the Pirates, tying the World Series at one game apiece. The 'Georgia Peach' swipes home plate 54 times during his career, a major league record.

1910 Sitting out the last two games of the season, Tigers outfielder Ty Cobb wins the third of his nine consecutive batting titles by edging Nap Lajoie by less than a percentage point. The player-manager of the Cleveland Naps, who had six bogus hits on the last day thanks to the Browns' attempt to dethrone the Georgia Peach with their defensive indifference, still loses the race .3849 to .3840.

1913 In Game 3 of the World Series, rookie right-hander Joe Bush throws a complete game, limiting the Giants to five hits in the A's 8-2 victory at the Polo Grounds. At the age of 20 years and 316 days, 'Bullet Joe' is the youngest pitcher to start a game in the Fall Classic, 40 days sooner than Fernando Valenzuela (1981) and Jim Palmer (1966), tied for second on the list.

1915 Woodrow Wilson becomes the first president to watch a World Series game when he attends Game 2 of the Fall Classic played at the Baker Bowl in Philadelphia. Red Sox hurler Rube Foster limits the Phillies to just three hits en route to a 2-1 victory, evening the series at one game apiece.

​

1919 With rumors spreading about a fix, the White Sox, after an ineffective start by Lefty Williams, are defeated 10-5 at Comiskey Park and drop the World Series to the underdog Reds, five games to 3. Before next season begins, eight Chicago players, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, will be accused of accepting bribes to throw the games purposely.

 

1928 At Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, the Yankees beat the Cardinals, 7-3, completing their second consecutive sweep of the World Series. The Bronx Bombers, winning their third World Championship in franchise history, live up to their name when they slugged five homers in the game, three by Babe Ruth, a feat which not equaled until 1989 when Oakland does it against San Francisco.

1934 At Detroit's Navin Field, Commissioner Landis makes Joe Medwick leave Game 7 of the World Series for 'his own safety.' The Tiger fans, upset with his aggressive slide into third baseman Marv Owen, respond by hurling fruit at the outfielder during the Cardinals' 11-0 series-clinching victory.

1938 Sweeping the Cubs in four games, the Bronx Bombers become the first team in major league history to win three consecutive World Series. Red Ruffing goes the distance, beating Chicago, 8-3, at Yankee Stadium.

​

1948 Behind the solid pitching of Steve Gromek, the Indians win pivotal Game 4 of the Fall Classic, edging the Braves, 2-1, to take a 3-1 series lead. Larry Doby's home run, the first by a black player in World Series history, proves to be the difference in the Tribe's victory.

​

1949 During the ninth inning of the Dodgers' 10-8 loss to the Yankees in Game 5, the Ebbets Field lights are turned on, making it the first time a World Series game takes place under artificial lights. The first scheduled Fall Classic night game occurs when the Pirates host Baltimore for Game 4 at Three Rivers Stadium in 1971.

1951 In the Yankees' 13-1 rout of the Giants in Game 5 of the Fall Classic victory at the Polo Grounds, Gil McDougald, joining Elmer Smith (1920) and Tony Lazzeri (1936), becomes the third player in World Series history to hit a grand slam. The 23-year-old Yankees infielder is the first rookie to accomplish the feat.

1958 In Game 7, the Yankees beat the defending World champion Braves in Milwaukee's County Stadium, 6-2, for their eighteenth title, the club's seventh in the past decade. The Bronx Bombers become only the second team, the first being the 1925 Pirates, to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win a best-of-seven Fall Classic.

 

1961 With the help of a pair of five-run innings at Crosley Field, the Yankees win the World Series, beating the Reds in Game 5, 13-5. Johnny Blanchard, a reserve player who will collect ten hits in 29 at-bats in five Fall Classics, hits two home runs and bats .400 en route to the Bronx Bombers' 19th World Championship.

1966 For the second consecutive day, the Orioles win a World Series game, 1-0, in a contest decided by a home run when Frank Robinson takes a Don Drysdale pitch deep over the left-field fence in the fourth inning. With the lone run scored on a homer, for only the fifth time in the history of the Fall Classic, and the complete-game shutout thrown by Dave McNally, Baltimore completes a four-game sweep over the Dodgers.

1968 The Tigers score ten runs in the third inning en route to a 13-1 victory over the Cardinals in Game 6 of the Fall Classic. Detroit's big frame, which equals the World Series mark set by the 1929 A's, sees 15 batters come to the plate, who collect seven hits, one hit-by-pitch, and four walks against four Redbird hurlers in the Busch Stadium contest.

1969 A few days after agreeing to be on the Angels' coaching staff, Sparky Anderson accepts an offer to replace Dave Bristol as the Reds' manager. During his nine-year tenure, in which Cincinnati will average 96 victories a season, the club will win five divisional titles, four National League pennants, and consecutive World Series in 1975 and 1976.

1976 En route to a party at a golf course owned by former teammate Bill Mazeroski, 29-year-old Pirates reliever Bob Moose dies on his birthday in a two-car crash on Route 7 in Martin's Ferry, Ohio. The right-hander spent his entire nine-year career with Pittsburgh, compiling a 76-71 record with an ERA of 3.50 and no-hit the Mets in 1969.

 

1980 In Game 2 of the ALCS, with the Yankees trailing 3-2 with two outs in the top of the eighth, George Steinbrenner is caught on live national television shouting what appears to be profanities when Willie Randolph is tagged out at home on a relay throw by George Brett. The Yankees' owner wants manager Dick Howser to fire third base coach Mike Ferraro on the spot, who refuses and will lose his job when the team is swept in three games by the Royals, despite a first-place finish in the American League East, compiling a 103-59 record.

1989 Televising the deciding Game 5 of the NLCS, a 3-2 Giants victory over the Cubs from Candlestick Park, NBC broadcasts its final edition of the network's Game of the Week. Next season, CBS's sporadic and less frequent coverage of a regular-season weekly game led many to believe the organization was only interested in airing the All-Star Game and postseason contests.

1996 Derek Jeter, with the Yankees down 4-3 in the eighth inning, ties the game with a fly ball to right field ruled a home run by umpire Rich Garcia, despite the protest of spectator interference that prevented the ball from being caught by outfielder Tony Tarasco and the Orioles manager Davey. Video replay clearly shows 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reaching over the fence and bringing the catchable live ball into the stands, forever changing the outcome of Game 1 of the ALCS and, many believe, of the series.

2005 At Minute Maid Park, Chris Burke's 18th-inning homer ends the longest postseason game in baseball history as the Astros defeat the Braves, 7-6, to advance into the National League Championship Series. Atlanta's five-run late lead in the contest vanishes with an eighth-inning grand slam by Lance Berkman and a two-out ninth-inning solo shot by Brad Ausmus, which barely clears Gold Glove center fielder Andruw Jones' outstretched hand.

• • 1905 - At Philadelphia, Christy Mathewson of the Giants outpitches 26-game-winner Eddie Plank 3-0 in the first game of an all-shutout Series.
    
  • 1906 - Snow flies at West Side Park as the first one-city World Series opens with the 116-win Cubs heavy favorites. White Sox starter Nick Altrock outduels Three Finger Brown for a 2-1 victory.
    
  • 1910 - Nap Lajoie, in a batting race with Ty Cobb, collected eight hits for Cleveland in a season-ending doubleheader with the Browns. The hits were somewhat tainted, however, as St. Louis third baseman Red Corriden played back as Lajoie bunted safely six times. Regardless, Cobb was awarded the batting title by a fraction of a point.
    
  • 1916 - Babe Ruth outpitched Sherry Smith of the Brooklyn Dodgers as the Boston Red Sox won the longest World Series game, 2-1 in 14 innings.
    
  • 1919 - White Sox starter Lefty Williams gets just one man out in the first inning and the Reds go on to a 10-5 victory. Cincinnati wins the best-of-nine World Series in eight games. A year after the 1919 Series ends, the White Sox will become the Black Sox, and eight players will be barred from baseball for taking part in throwing the Series.
    
  • 1926 - Grover Alexander scatters eight hits in Game Six while the Cards tee off at Yankee Stadium for a 10-2 romp that sends the Series to a seventh game.
    
  • 1928 - Babe Ruth hit three home runs in a World Series game for the second time in his career as the Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3.
    
  • 1934 - Dizzy Dean of St. Louis blanked the Detroit Tigers 11-0 in the seventh game of the World Series.
    
  • 1938 - The Yankees become the first team to win three successive World Championships, defeating the Cubs 8-3. Red Ruffing wins his second game as the Yankees sweep the Cubs for the second time in six years.
    
  • 1944 - The Cardinals top the Browns, 3-1, and win the World Series in six games.
    
  • 1949 - The Yankees pound the Dodgers 10-6 to win the World Series in five games. Pinch hitter and third baseman Bobby Brown is the hitting hero, batting .500 and driving in five runs.
    
  • 1956 - The Dodgers bounce back after Don Larsen's perfect game to tie the series in Game Six. Clem Labine comes out of the bullpen to pitch a 1-0 victory over the Yankees in 10 innings.
    
  • 1957 - With Warren Spahn stricken by the flu, Lew Burdette, pitching with two days rest, hurls his third complete game and second shutout to beat New York 5-0 to win the World Series.
    
  • 1958 - Bob Turley of the Yankees pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to beat the Milwaukee Braves 6-2 for the World Series title. New York became the first team since 1925 to win the World Series after being down 1-3.
    
  • 1966 - Dave McNally wraps up Baltimore's brilliant pitching display, and a World Championship, with a four-hit, 1-0 win. Frank Robinson's home run off Don Drysdale gives Baltimore a surprising sweep of the defending champion Dodgers. The 33 consecutive scoreless innings pitched by Baltimore sets a World Series record.
    
  • 1967 - Roger Maris homers for the Cardinals in the ninth inning, but Jim Lonborg's 3-1 win sends the World Series back to Boston.
    
  • 1971 - The Orioles win the opener of the World Series over the Pirates 5-3. Dave McNally tosses a three-hitter and Merv Rettenmund adds a three-run homer.
    
  • 1977 - The New York Yankees rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 and take the American League pennant in the fifth game of the playoffs.
    
  • 1984 - The Tigers win the World Series opener as Jack Morris pitches a complete-game 3-2 victory over San Diego. Larry Herndon's two-run home run in the fifth provides the winning margin.
    
  • 1988 - The Oakland Athletics completed a four-game sweep in the ALCS by beating the Boston Red Sox 4-1. Jose Canseco tied an AL playoff record with his third home run of the series and Dennis Eckersley set a major league playoff mark with his fourth save.
    
  • 1989 - The Giants win their first NL pennant since 1962 by defeating the Cubs 3-2 in Game Five of the NLCS. Will Clark bats .650 in the series with eight RBI to win MVP honors.
    
  • 1996 - Bernie Williams homered in the 11th inning to give New York a 5-4 victory over Baltimore in Game 1 of the AL championship series. The Yankees got a lot of help from a fan when Jeff Maier, 12, created a game-tying homer by Derek Jeter in the eighth when he reached out and grabbed a ball that was about to be caught by Tony Tarasco.

1904 On the last day of the season, with one day of rest, Pilgrims right-hander Bill Dinneen beats Jack Chesbro when the 41-game winner uncorks a ninth-inning wild pitch, snapping a 2-2 tie against the Highlander. Boston's Big Bill completes all 37 games he started during the season, throwing 337.2 consecutive innings, with his final effort giving the team their second straight American League pennant.

​

1920 Indians' Bill Wambsganss becomes the only player in World Series history to complete an unassisted triple play when he makes a leaping catch, steps on second base, and tags the runner arriving from first base. Silence engulfs Cleveland's League Park as the hometown fans try to digest what they had just witnessed.

​

1920 Outfielder Elmer Smith becomes the first player to hit a grand slam in World Series history when the Indians defeat the Robins and Burleigh Grimes, 8-1. Cleveland's starter Jim Bagby contributes to his cause, blasting a three-run home run to become the first pitcher to hit a home run in the Fall Classic.

1923 In the first postseason game ever played at Yankee Stadium, veteran Giants outfielder Casey Stengel becomes the first player to hit a World Series homer in the Bronx ballpark, breaking a 4-4 deadlock in the top of the ninth inning with an inside-the-park round-tripper off Joe Bush. The Game 1 matchup is the first Fall Classic contest to be broadcast nationally.

1924 With the score tied at 3-3 and one out in the bottom of the 12th in Game 7 of the World Series, Senators' backstop Muddy Ruel lifts a high catchable foul pop-up, which Giant catcher Hank Gowdy misses when he stumbles over his mask. Given a second chance, Ruel then doubles and eventually scores the winning run, making the Senators World Champs.

1948 Until the Dodgers host the 1959 Fall Classic at the LA Coliseum, the largest crowd ever to attend a World Series game jam into Cleveland's Municipal Stadium to witness a showdown between two future Hall of Famers. Braves' southpaw Warren Spahn beats Bob Feller and the Indians in Game 5 of the Fall Classic, 11-5 in front of 86,288 fans.

1951 In Game 6 of the Fall Classic, the Yankees become World Champions for the 14th time in franchise history when they beat the Giants in the Bronx ballpark contest, 4-3. Hank Bauer delivers the signature blow, a three-run triple hit in the sixth inning off Game 1 winner Dave Koslo.

​

1956 In Game 7 of the World Series, Johnny Kucks, allowing just three singles, blanks Brooklyn, 9-0, to give the Yankees their 17th World Championship in franchise history. In the last postseason game played at Ebbets Field, the 24-year-old right-hander ends the game by striking out Jackie Robinson, which turns out to be the Dodger infielder's final major league at-bat when he decides to retire after being traded to the Giants in the off-season.

1957 With a 5-0 victory over the defending World Champions in Game 7 at Yankee Stadium, Milwaukee captures its first World Series championship since the 'Miracle Braves' won the title representing Boston in 1914. The Most Valuable Player of the Fall Classic is right-hander Starting Game 7 on just two days rest Lew Burdette hurled three complete-game victories, including today's shutout.

1961 The three-round National League expansion draft begins at the circuit's headquarters in Cincinnati when the Colt .45s select former Giant shortstop Eddie Bressoud and the Mets' #1 choice is Hobie Landrith, a catcher who also played for San Francisco last season. Houston and New York select 16 players, two from each of the existing clubs, at 75,000 per player, adding two/three more players at $50,000 in round two, and then in the final round picking four players from a premium list at $125,000 apiece, costing the new owners a staggering $3,650,000 for 45 players of questionable talent.

1962 In Game 5 of the World Series, Tom Tresh belts an eighth-inning homer off Jack Sanford to give the Bronx Bombers a 5-3 comeback win over the Giants at Yankee Stadium. The rookie shortstop's dad, Mike Tresh, who hit only two home runs in his dozen big league seasons, before the at-bat left his seat behind home plate and moved to the standing-room section in Yankee Stadium, hoping to bring his son good luck.

​

1963 The Mets announce the club has 'traded' coaches with the Giants, bringing Wes Westrum to New York in exchange for Cookie Lavagetto, recovering from a serious illness, and requested a position nearer to his home in Oakland. Mets manager Casey Stengel met and became fond of his new coach during the recent All-Star Game and will be replaced by him as the team's second skipper in franchise history when the 75-year-old 'Old Perfessor' retires in 1965.

1964 At Yankee Stadium, Mickey Mantle, facing Barney Schultz, slams the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning out of the Bronx ballpark, giving New York a dramatic 2-1 walk-off victory and two games to one advantage over St. Louis in the Fall Classic. The Mick's game-winning round-tripper, his 16th Fall Classic round-tripper, breaking the previous mark set by Babe Ruth, makes him the fifth major leaguer to end a World Series game with a home run.

​

1968 Bob Gibson, who sets the mark for total strikeouts (35) in a World Series, goes the distance in his eighth consecutive World Series game, losing Game 7 to Detroit, 4-1. The only time the St. Louis Cardinal right-hander, who will compile a 1.89 postseason ERA, didn't finish a Fall Classic contest was in his first appearance in 1964 when he tossed eight innings against the Yankees.

​

1968 In the fifth inning of Game 7 of the World Series, Dal Maxvill pops out to first base, becoming the first major leaguer to go 0-for-22 in the Fall Classic. The Cardinal shortstop surpasses the single series infamous mark previously shared by Gil Hodges (1952 - Dodgers), Red Murray (1911 - Giants), Billy Sullivan (1906 - White Sox), and Jimmy Sheckard (1906 - Cubs).

 

1970 In the first World Series game played on artificial turf, Boog Powell, Ellie Hendricks, and Brooks Robinson homer to power the Orioles past the Reds, 4-3. In Game 1 of the Fall Classic, Baltimore's offensive output overcomes Cincinnati's 3-0 early lead at Riverfront Stadium.

1973 In the fifth and deciding game, the Mets win their second National League pennant in franchise history, beating the Reds, 7-2. Tom Seaver, who gives up seven hits in 8.1 innings, bests Cincinnati right-hander Jack Billingham in the Shea Stadium showdown.

​

1973 During oral arguments in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, Potter Stewart is handed a note with the startling news that Vice President Agnew had just resigned. The message also informs the glum Republican Justice, a big Reds fan, that the Mets are ahead of Cincinnati in the NLCS, 2-0.

1976 The Royals gain their first postseason victory in franchise history when they beat the Yankees, 7-3, in Game 2 of the ALCS. Kansas City southpaw Paul Splittorff, pitching 5.2 innings in relief, is credited with the victory.

1978 Before the start of Game 1 of the World Series, the Dodgers retire the uniform #19 of Jim Gilliam, their coach, who died suddenly two days ago due to a massive brain hemorrhage. The 49-year-old former All-Star LA infielder will become the team's rst player not inducted into the Hall of Fame to receive this honor. fi​

1982 In Game 5, the Brewers capture the American League flag, beating the Angels at County Stadium, 4-3. Milwaukee becomes the first team to overcome an 0-2 start in a best of a five-game LCS, winning the remaining three games against California, all played at home.

 

1993 The BBWAA selects Chicago slugger Frank Thomas as the American League's Most Valuable Player. The first baseman, ranked among the top ten of the league's nine offensive categories, batted .317 with 41 home runs and knocked in 128 runs for the division-winning White Sox.

​

1999 Scoring more than nineteen NFL teams, the Red Sox establish a major league record for most runs and the biggest margin of victory in a postseason game, scoring in every inning but the sixth in their 23-7 rout of the Indians. John Valentin collects seven RBIs in the Fenway Park contest as the Red Sox knot the five-game series at two games apiece.

2000 In Game 1, the Mariners (9) and Yankees (13) combined for 22 strikeouts to set an ALCS record. Seattle wins the contest behind the solid pitching of Freddie Garcia, who rings up eight Bombers in 6.2 innings in the team's 2-0 victory in the Bronx.

​

2003 The Cubs take a 2-1 game advantage in the NLCS when they beat the Marlins in extra innings at Pro Player Stadium, 5-4. The eventual winning run scores in the top of the 11th when Doug Glanville triples off Florida's Brandon Looper to plate Kenny Lofton, who had singled with one out in the frame.

2003 Kenny Lofton sets an NLCS record and ties the ALCS mark with six hits in six consecutive at-bats. Gary Matthews (Phillies-1983), Will Clark (Giants-1989), Steve Buechele (Pirates-1991), and Javy Lopez (Braves-1996) all held the previous NL distinction with five consecutive hits, with Blue Jays' DH Paul Molitor establishing the major league standard in 1993, now shared with the Cub flychaser.

2005 The Phillies fire Ed Wade as their general manager, although the team( 88-74) has had three straight winning seasons and missed a chance of being the wild card by only one game this season. Philadelphia has not played in the postseason for 12 consecutive years, including the last eight seasons with Wade calling the shots.

2005 Rafael Palmeiro avoids perjury charges when a Congressional subcommittee decides not to prosecute him following its investigation. The former Orioles' first baseman/DH had piqued the legislators' interest when he tested positive for steroids four months after pointing his finger at the committee during a Capitol Hill hearing, emphatically denying that he had used performance-enhancing substances.

 

2008 Earlier in the day, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel learns of his mother's death at a Virginia hospital. The grieving skipper, one of ten of June's children, stays with the team and directs his club to an 8-5 victory against the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park in Game 2 of the NLDS.

2009 In Matt Holliday's first at-bat at home since his critical error allowed LA to stage an amazing comeback victory, the Cardinals' left fielder receives a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 47,296 at Busch Stadium. The former NLCS MVP award winner (Colorado - 2007), who will become a free agent after the season, is touched by the fans' reaction and appreciative of their support.

2009 The Dodgers advance to their second consecutive National League championship series, beating St. Louis, 5-1, to complete a three-game sweep of the Redbirds in the NLDS. 2010 Behind the solid starting pitching of Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels, the Phillies complete the franchise's first playoff sweep when Hamels throws a five-hit complete-game victory, beating the Reds at Great American Ball Park, 2-0. 2011 Ranger left fielder Nelson Cruz hits the first walk-off grand slam in major league playoff history when his 11th inning round-tripper beats Detroit, 7-3, in Game Two of the ALCS. The victory in Arlington gives Texas a 2-0 advantage in the seven-game series.

2019 After compiling a .497 winning percentage in his two seasons at the helm, the Phillies fire their manager Gabe Kapler. The dismissal marks the available eighth managerial vacancy that includes skippers needed by the Mets, Pirates, Angels, Royals, Cubs, Padres, and the Giants, who will hire the former Philadelphia pilot next month as their 37th manager to replace the retiring Bruce Bochy.

• • 1904 - Boston clinched the pennant on the last day of the season when Jack Chesbro of the New York Highlanders threw a wild pitch in the ninth to allow the winning run to score from third. The Red Sox won 3-2 in the doubleheader opener.
    
  • 1906 - Ed Reulbach's no-hit bid is broken by Jiggs Donahue's single in the seventh, but the Cubs beat the White Sox, 7-1. The next World Series one-hitter will come in 1945, by another Cub: Claude Passeau.
    
  • 1920 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 8-1 in the fifth game of the World Series. For the Indians, Elmer Smith hit the first Series grand slam and Jim Bagby, the winner, hit the first Series homer by a pitcher.
    
  • 1923 - It's an all-New York World Series for the third straight year. A 4-4 tie is broken in the top of the ninth by the Giants. Casey Stengel's inside-the-park home run is the first World Series homer at Yankee Stadium. It is the first World Series to be broadcast on a nationwide radio network.
    
  • 1924 - The Washington Senators won their only championship by defeating the Giants 4-3 in 12 innings. The winning run scored when a ball hit by Earl McNeely bounced over third baseman Fred Lindstrom's head.
    
  • 1926 - Grover Alexander, 39, saved Game 7 and the World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals, fanning Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and pitching 2 1/3 hitless innings.
    
  • 1931 - The Philadelphia Athletics rally for two runs and have two runners on base with two outs in the ninth when Cardinals reliever Bill Hallahan gets the final out for the 4-2 win in Game Seven. The A's are denied their third consecutive World Championship.
    
  • 1937 - Lefty Gomez knocks in the winning run in the 4-2 clincher in Game Five against the Giants. It is his record fifth World Series win without a loss. Another record comes when the Yankees complete the Series without an error.
    
  • 1945 - The Tigers score five runs in the first inning of Game Seven and rout the Cubs 9-3 behind Hal Newhouser, who strikes out 10 to win the World Series.
    
  • 1951 - Hank Bauer's bases-loaded triple in Game Six propels the Yankees to a 4-3 win and their third straight Series victory.
    
  • 1956 - Johnny Kucks sets down Brooklyn, 9-0, as the Yankees win the World Series in seven games. Yogi Berra hits a pair of two-run home runs and Bill Skowron hits a grand slam. It's the seventh and final time Brooklyn and the Yankees meet in the Series. In the future, it will take a jet, not a subway, to get these two teams together.
    
  • 1957 - Lew Burdette's third victory of the World Series, a 5-0 decision over the New York Yankees, gave the Milwaukee Braves the championship.
    
  • 1964 - Jim Bouton and Curt Simmons battle to a 1-1 tie through eight innings in Game Three. Mickey Mantle homers on Barney Schultz's first pitch in the ninth, and the Yankees win, 2-1.
    
  • 1968 - Mickey Lolich won the World Series for the Detroit Tigers by defeating Bob Gibson and the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 in Game 7. It was Lolich's third win and came after the Tigers had lost three of the first four games.
    
  • 1973 - Tom Seaver hurls the Mets into the World Series for the second time in four years with a 7-2 victory over the Reds in Game Five of the NLCS.
    
  • 1978 - Davey Lopes collects two home runs and five RBI to lead the Dodgers to an 11-5 victory over the Yankees in the first game of the World Series.
    
  • 1979 - The Orioles score five runs in the first inning of the World Series, then hang on to defeat the Pirates 5-4.
    
  • 1980 - Kansas City's George Brett hit an upper deck three-run homer off relief ace Goose Gossage to give the Kansas City Royals a 4-2 victory and a three-game sweep of New York Yankees in the ALCS.
    
  • 1982 - The Brewers complete their comeback from a 2-0 ALCS deficit by edging the Angels 4-3, to earn their first-ever trip to the World Series. Angels outfielder Fred Lynn bats .611 for the series and is named MVP in a losing cause.
    
  • 1987 - Jeffrey Leonard homered for the fourth straight game as the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2, tying the NLCS at two games apiece.
    
  • 1990 - The Oakland Athletics swept the Boston Red Sox for the American League pennant and their third straight trip to the World Series with a 3-1 victory. MVP Dave Stewart won for the eighth straight time in head-to-head matchups with Roger Clemens, who was ejected in the second inning for arguing balls and strikes with umpire Terry Cooney.
    
  • 1996 - Gary Gaetti hits a grand slam off Greg Maddux to lead the Cardinals to an 8-3 win over the Braves and a tie of the NLCS.
