1901 In the second inning of the nightcap against the Americans in Baltimore, Jimmy Hart punches umpire John Haskell in the face. The Orioles' rookie first baseman who hits .311 playing in a total of only 58 games in his major league career, serves a ten-day suspension, but quits after going 4-for-4 upon his return because the team refused to pay his $25 fine.
1921 Pittsburgh's radio station KDKA provides listeners with the first-ever broadcast of a major league game. Harold Arlin, detailing the action in the Pirates' 8-5 victory over the Phillies at Forbes Field, becomes baseball's first play-by-play announcer.

1932 Tommy Bridges loses his bid for a perfect game when Senator pinch-hitter Dave Harris, the 27th batter he faces, bloops a single in the Tigers' 13-0 rout over Washington. The 24-year-old right-handed Tennessean from Gordonsville will toss two more one-hitters for Detroit next season.

1935 On a stormy Monday afternoon at Fenway Park, the Yankees and Red Sox engage in stalling and hurry-up tactics trying to take advantage of the inclement weather. American League president John Heydler will fine both managers, Joe Cronin (Boston) and Joe McCarthy (New York), $100 for their antics during the Bronx Bombers' eventual 10-2 victory.
1937 The Newport Canners vs. Johnson City Soldiers' Appalachian League contest in Tennessee ends in the sixth inning when the teams run out of baseballs. Some angry fans show their displeasure by destroying the set of bleachers that had been their seats before the game's abrupt ending.
1940 In a rain-shortened 4-0 victory over the Tigers, Silent John Whitehead of the St. Louis Browns pitches a six-inning no-hitter. The victory will be the quiet Texan's only victory this season.

1942 In front of fewer than three thousand patrons at Chicago's Comiskey Park, the White Sox beat the Tigers, 1-0. The game's only run scores when Don Kolloway steals home with two outs in the fifth inning.

 

1953 Don Larsen, in his 5-0 complete-game loss to Boston at Fenway Park, goes 3-for-3 to establish the mark for consecutive hits by a pitcher with seven. The Browns' rookie right-hander will hit .284 in 81 at-bats this season.

1954 Stan Musial, in a 13-4 rout of the Dodgers in Brooklyn, paces the Cardinals attack, hitting two homers and driving in seven runs. The defeat is Preacher Roe's first loss to St. Louis at Ebbets Field in four years.

1955 White Sox second baseman Nellie Fox's consecutive game streak ends at 274. Starting tomorrow, the future Hall of Fame infielder will play in 798 straight contests.

1960 In a deal engineered by Tigers president Bill Devitt and Indians GM Frank Lane, their struggling teams become the first to swap skippers. The Tribe's new manager, Jimmy Dykes, will compile a 103-115 record for Cleveland while Joe Gordon posts a 26-31 mark in his two-months stay in Detroit.
1969 With a titanic blast that clears the right-field pavilion, Willie Stargell becomes the first player to hit a home run completely out of Dodger Stadium. The 506-foot round-tripper helps the Pirates defeat LA, 11-3.

1972 Ed Brinkman commits an error, ending his major league record of 72 games and 331 total chances at shortstop without making a misplay. The 30-year-old Tiger infielder wins his only Gold Glove this season.

1973 Phil Niekro goes the distance, holding the Padres hitless in a 9-0 rout at home. The knuckleballer's no-hitter is the first thrown by a Braves hurler since the team shifted to Atlanta in 1966.

1975 In the Phillies' 13-5 victory, Cubs starter Bill Bonham gives up a major league record of seven hits to the first seven batters he faces in the Veterans Stadium contest. The former UCLA hurler, who doesn't record an out, is replaced by Ken Crosby, who promptly gives up a single to Johnny Oates.
1979 At Chavez Ravine, Don Sutton fans six batters in LA's 8-1 victory over San Francisco, surpassing Don Drysdale, to become the Dodgers' all-time strikeout leader with 2,487. After establishing the mark and receiving a two-minute standing ovation that he acknowledges by tipping his cap, the umpire charges the right-hander with an automatic ball due to running his fingers across his lips while thanking the crowd.

1979 The Hall of Fame enshrines outfielders Willie Mays (Giants, Mets) and Hack Wilson (Giants, Cubs, Dodgers, and Phillies). Baseball administrator Warren Giles, who served as the president of the National League from 1951 to 1969, is also inducted during the Cooperstown ceremony.

1983 Billy Martin is suspended for two games for calling umpire Dale Ford "a stone liar" after the Yankees' July 31st extra-inning 12-6 victory against the White Sox in Chicago. The suspension marks the second time this season the American League has disciplined the Bronx Bomber manager for his continued abuse of umpires.
1984 Cliff Johnson hits his 19th career pinch-hit home run, breaking a major league record shared with Jerry Lynch, who established the mark in 1966 playing with the Pirates. The eight-inning round-tripper off Tippy Martinez proves to be the difference in Toronto's 4-3 victory over the Orioles at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.

1985 Baseball names Keith Hernandez the player of the month, making him the first Met honored since Dave Kingman received the nod ten years ago. The New York first baseman, obtained in a trade with the Cardinals two seasons ago, collected 40 hits in his 102 at-bats last month, compiling a .392 batting average while driving in 29 runs for the team winning 21 of 28 decisions.

1985 In the Mets' 7-2 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Darryl Strawberry belts three home runs, propelling the team into first place with a half-game lead over the Cardinals in the National League East. Eleven years and one day later, the 'Straw' will enjoy his second three-homer game, going deep for the Yankees three times against the White Sox in a 9-2 win in the Bronx.

1986 At Candlestick Park, Giants' southpaw Steve Carlton gets his 4000th strikeout, fanning Reds' center fielder Eric Davis. The historic whiff occurs in the third inning with two runners on base and no outs in the eventual Reds' 11-6 victory.

1992 The A's take over first place in the AL West when Dennis Eckersley extends his major league record to 39 straight saves, far surpassing the mark of 25 established by Blue Jay closer Tom Henke last season. Oakland outfielder Jose Canseco walks in his first two plate appearances in the team's 4-3 victory in Texas, tying a major league record with seven consecutive base-on-balls in the span of two games.

1993 In the Padres' 11-10 victory over the Giants, Tony Gwynn goes 6-for-7 in the 12-inning contest at Qualcomm Stadium. The San Diego right fielder's performance at the plate marks the fourth time this season he has collected five or more hits, tying the major league record shared by Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Stan Musial.

1994 Jeff Bagwell establishes a new Astros single-season home run record when he hits number 38, a fifth-inning two-out, two-run homer, off reliever Pat Gomez in the team's 12-4 victory over the Giants at the Astrodome. The Houston first baseman, who also breaks the record of 110 RBIs set by Bob Watson in 1977 with the round-tripper, surpasses the mark established 27 years ago by Jimmy Wynn.

1999 Mark McGwire hits his 500th career home run off Padres' hurler Andy Ashby, becoming the 16th major leaguer and the fastest to reach this milestone. The St. Louis slugger is the first to accomplish the feat a year after reaching the 400 home run plateau.

2000 Sammy Sosa becomes the first Cubs player to reach 100 RBIs six consecutive times. Hack Wilson did it for five straight seasons from 1926-30.

2001 Kirby Puckett and Dave Winfield, both elected to by the BBWAA in his first year of eligibility, are enshrined in the Hall of Fame. World Series hero Bill Mazeroski and the late Negro Leagues pitcher Hilton Smith, players selected by the Veterans Committee, join the former Twin teammates.

2001 At Jacobs Field, the Indians, who trailed in the game 14-2 after six innings, tally twelve runs to tie the score and beat the Mariners, 15-14, thanks to Jolbert Cabrera's 11th inning broken-bat single scoring Kenny Lofton to complete the unbelievable comeback. The Tribe joins the 1911 Tigers and 1925 A's to become the third team in major league history to have won after being down by a dozen runs.
2002 In a make-up game against the Angels, the Tigers host 'Silent Night.' The fans hear no electronic, video, and commercial enhancements during Detroit's 6-3 loss to Anaheim at Comerica Park.

 

2005 Albert Pujols becomes the first player to connect for 30 home runs in his first five big-league seasons. The Cardinals first baseman has hit 190 homers during this span from the start of his career in 2001, equaling Eddie Mathews' total (1952-56) and 25 fewer than Ralph Kiner (1946-1950).

2006 With four bases on balls, three of which are intentional, the Rangers finally prevent Vladimir Guerrero from getting a hit. The Angel All-Star outfielder, who started playing in the American League after leaving Montreal as a free agent in 2003, had safely hit in all of his previous 44 games against Texas.
2006 Trevor Hoffman throws a scoreless ninth inning in San Diego's 6-3 victory over the Nationals at Petco Park to become the first major league reliever to record 30 saves for eleven seasons. The Padres closer's milestone establishes a major league record, surpassing the mark set by Lee Smith, the sport's previous all-time saves leader.

2007 With his 246th career victory, an 8-5 win over Kansas City, Yankees right-hander Mike Mussina becomes the winningest pitcher in baseball history without a 20-win season. 'Moose' will reach the elusive milestone with a 20-9 record next season, his last in the majors.
2007 At Wrigley Field, Tom Glavine, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, becomes the 23rd player in major league history to win his 300th victory. The crafty southpaw, the fifth lefty to reach the milestone, limits the Cubs to six hits and a walk in 6.1 innings as the Mets bang-out 16 hits and beat Chicago in a nationally televised ESPN Sunday night game, 8-3.

2010 The bankrupt Rangers are sold at an auction for $385 million to a group led by Hall of Famer and club president Nolan Ryan. The new ownership group outbid the recently formed partnership of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Houston investor Jim Crane, who tried to buy the team in 2008.
2010 In the top of the ninth, the Twins recover from blowing a 6-0 lead when Jason Kubel's two-out pop-up lands behind the pitcher's mound untouched by the Rays' middle infielders for the go-ahead single in the team's eventual 8-6 victory. The odd play, a result of the ball ricocheting off a catwalk and changing direction 190 feet above Tropicana Field, will prompt a change of the ground rules for postseason games played in Tampa Bay.
2011 The Twins celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1991 controversial play when Kent Hrbek and Ron Gant becoming entangled at first base in Game 2 of the World Series with a bobblehead doll depicting one of the worst of all-time decisions by an umpire. Drew Coble called Gant out when it appeared first baseman Kent Hrbek had lifted him off the bag.

2011 A big fan of the Mississippi Braves, Darla Harlow is honored to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Trustmark Park in Pearl. After tossing the ball to home plate, the military wife is totally surprised when the catcher takes off his mask, revealing the 'player' is her husband, Michael, an Army major who has been away from home, serving in Afghanistan for the past nine months.

2012 Darwin Barney becomes the Cubs' all-time leader for second basemen when he plays in his 91st consecutive game in a single season without committing an error. The 26-year-old Chicago infielder, en route to setting the National League mark with a 127 straight errorless-game streak, surpasses Ryne Sandberg's team record that the Hall of Famer established in 1989.
2013 Major League Baseball releases the names of 13 players suspended for their involvement with performance-enhancing substances supplied by the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic. Thirty-eight-year-old Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez receives the harshest punishment, sidelined without pay for 211 regular-season games, much more than the 50-game suspensions given to most players implicated in the announcement.
2013 Minnie Forbes, the 81-year-old former owner of the Negro League Detroit Stars from 1956 to 1958, and about a dozen former baseball players meet with President Barack Obama at the White House. The country's first black president honors the group for their contributions to athletics and civil rights.

​

2017 The Indians unveil a bronze statue honoring Lou Boudreau, who managed the team to their last World Series title in 1948 while also being the Tribe's starting shortstop. The team places the sculpture of the seven-time All-Star outside the main entrance of Progressive Field near two fellow Hall of Famers and former teammates, Bob Feller and Larry Doby.

• • 1879 - After Providence pitcher Bobby Mathews gives up six runs in the first two innings, he switches positions with third baseman John Ward, who pitches shutout ball the rest of the way to rally the Grays to a 7-6 win. Captain George Wright will successfully employ this pitching scheme several more times during the season.
  • 1921 - Radio station KDKA and announcer Harold Arlin provided the first broadcast of a major league game. The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Phillies, 8-5, in Philadelphia.
  • 1931 - Detroit pitcher Tommy Bridges lost his bid for a perfect game on a bloop single by the 27th Washington batter, pinch-hitter Dave Harris. The Tigers beat the Senators, 13-0.
  • 1940 - John Whitehead of the St. Louis Browns pitched a rain-shortened, six-inning no-hitter for a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader.
  • 1955 - After playing 274 straight games at second base, Nellie Fox is given a day off by White Sox manager Marty Marion. Fox will come back the next day and start a streak of 798 consecutive games.
  • 1957 - The Brooklyn Sports Authority gets an engineering report on a 50,000-seat stadium in the downtown area. It will cost an estimated $20.7 million, including the land site. Indications are that there will be trouble finding a market for the bond issue.
    1964 - After weeks of negotiating, Ford Frick tells the league presidents and club owners he will not run for another term as commissioner.
  • 1969 - Willie Stargell is the first to hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium. The shot off Alan Foster over the right field pavilion roof travels 506 feet.
    1973 - Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves pitched a 9-0 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres.
  • 1975 - The first eight Phillies hit safely in a game against Bill Bonham and the Cubs, setting a major league record. The Phils win easily 13-5.
  • 1979 - Willie Mays, Warren Giles, and Hack Wilson are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
  • 1980 - Expos manager Dick Williams wins his 1,000th career game, an 11-5 victory over the Mets at Olympic Stadium.
  • 1984 - Toronto's Cliff Johnson hits his 19th career pinch home run, breaking the major league record of 18 he had shared with Jerry Lynch. Johnson's eighth-inning blast gives the Blue Jays a 4-3 win over the Orioles.
  • 1986 - The Reds pound the Giants' new pitcher Steve Carlton for seven runs in 3 1/3 innings to win 11-6. Carlton records his 4,000th strikeout to join Nolan Ryan as the only pitchers to reach that plateau. The Giants release Carlton after this start and he joins the White Sox.
  • 1990 - Hall of Fame induction ceremonies for Jim Palmer and Joe Morgan are rained out in Cooperstown, New York. The ceremony was conducted the following day at a local high school.

1890 John Reilly becomes the first major leaguer to hit for the cycle in different leagues when the Reds, who moved to the National League this season, beat Pittsburgh at League Park, 16-3. The Cincinnati first baseman hit for two cycles in 1883, also a first, when the team played in the American Association and were known as the Red Stockings.

1890 Making his major league debut, Cy Young is credited with the win when the Cleveland Spiders beat the Colts in Chicago's West Side Park, 8-1. During his 22-year career, the 23-year-old right-hander will average more than 23 victories per season en route to a major league record of 511, a mark believed by many to be unbreakable.

​

1906 At Cleveland's League Park, the Boston Americans are shut out for the fourth consecutive time, bowing to the Indians, 4-0. Combined with a scoreless three-game sweep by the White Sox, the team establishes a new American League record.
1908 Detroit outfielder Ty Cobb gets married, having departed the Tigers three days ago to attend the ceremony without the team's permission. Club co-owner Frank Navin considers the 21-year-old Georgia Peach's six-day defection during a pennant race as the most arrogant act he had ever heard of in baseball.
1930 Gene Rye hits three homers in one inning, blasting a solo homer, a three-run shot, and a grand slam in the Waco Cubs' 18-run eight-inning eruption in their eventual 20-7 Texas League victory over the visiting Beaumont Exporters at Katy Park. The 24-year-old diminutive southpaw-swinging outfielder, called Half Pint by his teammates, will be signed by the Red Sox, spending the first two months of next season with the team before being released, hitting just .179 in 17 games.

1937 The Braves become the first National League team to lead off a game with back-to-back homers. At Wrigley Field, Roy Johnson and Rabbit Warstler go deep to start the first inning off Tex Carleton, but Boston's quick start isn't enough when Chicago wins the contest, 12-6.
1939 In the first of two Negro League East-West All-Star Games this season, the West wins the Comiskey Park contest defeating the East 4-2 behind a strong outing by Ted 'Doubleduty' Radcliffe. The estimated crowd of 40,000 is more than double the 18,198 fans at Wrigley Field, watching the Cubs lose to the Bees, 9-8.

1941 Al Benton becomes the first major leaguer to have two sacrifice bunts in one inning. The Tiger right-hander accomplishes the feat in the top of the third inning, a frame that features 17 batters coming to bat, in an 11-2 rout of the Indians at Cleveland's League Park.
1947 Skeeter Webb is inserted into the game to run for Fred Hutchinson and scores a run in the Tigers' nine-run eighth inning in Detroit's 13-6 victory over Cleveland. Later in the frame, he comes to the plate and delivers an RBI sac fly, an unusual accomplishment for a pinch-runner.
1952 At the approximate age of 46, Satchel Paige becomes the oldest pitcher in major league history to hurl a complete-game shutout, beating Virgil 'Fire' Trucks and the Tigers, 1-0, when Bobby Young scores the game's only run in the 12th inning. The Browns' hurler will extend his record at 46-years and 75 days by throwing another scoreless complete game against the White Sox next month.

1962 For the fifth time, a team record, Willie Mays collects five hits in a game. In the Giants' 9-2 victory over Philadelphia at Candlestick Park, the 'Say Hey Kid' hits a pair of two-run homers in the first and second innings and follows up with singles in the fourth, fifth, and eighth.

​

1967 Orioles' third baseman Brooks Robinson hits into his fourth career triple play, setting a major league record. The fifth inning around-the-horn triple killing (5-4-3) doesn't hurt the club when the Birds beat the White Sox at Memorial Stadium, 4-0, to complete a sweep of a twin bill.
1969 In an alley behind a Detroit bar, Twins' manager Billy Martin intervenes in a scuffle between his starting pitcher Dave Boswell and outfielder Bob Allison, resulting in the right-hander knocked unconscious and in need of 20 stitches after being pummeled by his skipper. Although he will miss several starts because of the incident, the 24-year-old Maryland native will finish the season 20-12 for the first-place Minnesota club.

 

1972 The postponement of the second game of the Midland Cubs and Amarillo Giants doubleheader becomes necessary when thousands of grasshoppers invade Christensen Stadium. The massive clusters of insects, who swarmed from their nests behind the center-field wall after the ballpark's lights were turned on, made play impossible when infielders couldn't see their outfielders through the hordes of fluttering invaders.
1972 With his 660th and 661st career homers, Hank Aaron breaks Yankee legend Babe Ruth's record for hitting the most home runs with one team. Hammerin' Hank's second round-tripper of the day, a 10th inning blast, enables the Braves to beat Cincinnati at Riverfront Stadium, 4-3.

1973 Roberto Clemente becomes the first Latin-born player inducted into the Hall of Fame. The late Pirates outfielder, who died tragically on New Year's Eve in a crash carrying relief supplies to the earthquake victims in Nicaragua, was elected posthumously when baseball waives the mandatory five-year waiting period.

​

1979 After delivering the eulogy at Thurman Munson's funeral in Ohio, Bobby Murcer, a teammate and close friend of the deceased Yankee catcher, drives in all the runs in the Yankee 5-4 comeback victory over the Orioles at Yankee Stadium. The New York outfielder, with a bat he will never use again, hits a three-run home run and wins the game with a two-run single in the ninth inning.

1981 The players approved a split-season format necessitated by the seven-week strike. The Yankees, A's, Phillies, and Dodgers are declared the first-half champions, automatically qualify for the divisional series.
1983 Eric Rasmussen throws a 4-0 shutout against the Red Sox in his first American League outing. The Royals starter, who also blanked the Padres as a Cardinal in his first-ever major league game in 1975, becomes the first pitcher to toss a shutout in his National League and American League debuts.

1985 As announced three weeks ago, the Players' Association follows through on its threat to strike. The second midseason baseball work stoppage lasts only two days, with the owners abandoning their plan for a salary cap, a concept also vehemently opposed by baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth.
1986 In the game that establishes a new record for bases-full homers in one game, Texas beats Baltimore, 13-11. Rangers' infielder Toby Harrah hits a second-inning grand slam, and Larry Sheets and Jim Dwyer both go deep with the bases loaded in the Orioles' nine-run fourth frame.
1988 Jim Gott balks three times in the eighth inning, two of which allow a runner to score from third base. The Pirates' relief pitcher's poor form on the mound proves to be the difference in the Mets' 5-3 victory over the Bucs at Three Rivers Stadium.

 

1988 Goose Gossage becomes the second player in major league history to record 300 career saves when he faces one batter and gets the final out in the Cubs' 7-4 victory over Philadelphia at Wrigley Field. The future Hall of Fame right-handed reliever joins Rollie Fingers, who reached the milestone in 1982.

1988 Jose Canseco became the 11th player in major league history to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in a season. The A's outfielder, with 31 homers, joins the 30-30 club, taking second base with one out in the ninth inning for his 30th as Oakland beat the Mariners, 5-4.

1988 The dedication of a plaque takes place behind the home plate of the former Braves Field in remembrance of the departed National League team and the many historical events occurring in the ballpark. The historical marker, made possible through the efforts of Boston University, the Society for American Baseball Research, and the New England Sports Museum, includes references to the three World Series and one All-Star Game played there, as well as the longest game ever to take place in major league history.
1989 In a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park, the Red Sox retire Carl Yastrzemski's #8. 'Yaz,' recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, becomes only the fourth player in franchise history, joining Joe Cronin (4), Bobby Doerr (1), and Ted Williams (9), to be honored by having his uniform number retired by the club.

1992 Following a brief shouting match with Willie Wilson in the previous frame after the Oakland outfielder had tripled off him, Rangers right-hander Nolan Ryan hits him on the leg with a pitch with two outs eighth inning. The incident causes a ten-minute delay with benches emptying and fans littering the field with paper, resulting in the future Hall of Famer being ejected from a game for the first and only time during his 27-year major league career.
1993 Raising his average to .348, San Diego outfielder Tony Gwynn collects his 2000th career base hit, a single off Colorado hurler Bruce Ruffin in the team's 6-2 victory at Jack Murphy Stadium. Mr. Padre will reach the 3,000 hit milestone on the same date in 1999.

1998 Kevin McClatchy's vision of a baseball-only stadium in Pittsburgh becomes more of a reality when PNC Bank strikes a deal with the Pirates naming the Bucs' new home PNC Park. The highly-touted new ballpark, which will host its first game in 2001.
1999 After Tony Gwynn singles off Expos' Dan Smith in the first inning to get his 3000th hit, ump Kerwin Danley, a college teammate, Vendella Gwynn, his mom on her 64th birthday, and 13,540 Olympic Stadium fans celebrate the milestone. The Padres outfielder finishes the night 4-for-5, passing Roberto Clemente into 21st place on the all-time career hit list.

 

2001 Boston's backstop Scott Hatteberg hits into a triple play, but the catcher redeems himself in his next at-bat by hitting a grand slam, putting the Red Sox ahead in a 10-7 win over the Rangers. The triple killing, the third in Texas history, occurs when Hatteberg lines to shortstop Alex Rodriguez, who flips to second base, doubling up the runner on second, with second baseman Randy Velarde tagging the runner arriving from first.
2001 A group made up of the Hall of Famers (61), recipients of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for writers (13), Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasters (13), and Veterans Committee members (3) replaces the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee. The new members will select players every two years and executives, umpires, and managers only once every four years.
2002 In his major league debut, former NBA player Mark Hendrickson allows five runs and three hits in one-third of an inning, appearing in relief of Roy Halladay in the Blue Jays' 14-12 victory over the Mariners at the SkyDome. The 28-year-old southpaw played for the Nets, 76ers, Kings, and Cavaliers, leaving the hardwood in 2000 to play baseball after a lackluster season with Cleveland. The 6-foot-9 rookie left-hander becomes the tenth major leaguer to have appeared in NBA contest, joining Danny Ainge, Gene Conley, Dave DeBusschere, Dick Grat, Frankie Baumholtz, Cotton Nash, Ron Reed, Chuck Connors, and Steve Hamilton.
2002 Robb Nen becomes the 16th major leaguer to record his 300th career save when he closes the Giants' 11-10 win over the Cubs at Pacific Bell Park. The 32-year-old reliever, who will not pitch again after this season due to multiple surgeries for a torn rotator cuff, is the youngest closer to reach the milestone.

2003 Three weeks after trading for Armando Benitez with the crosstown Mets, the Yankees trade the much-maligned reliever to the Mariners. In return, the Bronx Bombers get back 36-year-old Jeff Nelson for his second tour with the team.
2005 The Rangers posthumously retire jersey #26 in honor of their former skipper Johnny Oates, who lead the team to its first three division titles in 1996 and 1998-99. The 1996 Manager of the Year (an award shared with Joe Torres of the Yankees) compiled a 506-476 (.515) record, stepping down 28 games into the 2001 season after 6+ seasons with Kansas City.

2006 The Mets continue to commit to their young players, signing 23-year-old David Wright to a $55 million, six-year contract extension. The third baseman joins shortstop Jose Reyes, also 23, who inked a long-term deal with the club three days ago worth $23.25 million over the four years of the extension of the Dominican's contract.

 

2007 Batting eighth in Tony La Russa's batting order, Cardinals' starting pitcher Braden Looper collects two hits in the fifth inning when St. Louis ties a big-league record with ten straight hits. The Redbirds use the consecutive safeties to score all their runs when they beat the visiting Padres, 10-5.
2010 In a 15-minute pregame ceremony delayed by rain at Turner Field, the Braves retire Tom Glavine's uniform number 47. The southpaw, who won 244 of his 305 career victories with the organization, including five seasons with 20 or more wins, was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame at a luncheon earlier in the day.

2013 Ryan Lavarnway ties a major league record, shared by Ray Katt (1954 Giants) and Gino Petralli (1987 Rangers) when he allows four passed balls in the first inning of the Red Sox's 15-10 victory over the Astros at Minute Maid Park. The Boston backstop, whose woes in corralling Steven Wright's knuckleballer allows three runs, makes up for his first-frame failings with a two-out double in the fifth, putting the team ahead for keeps, 8-7.
2016 The Mariners retire jersey #24 worn by Ken Griffey Jr., who spent 13 of his 22 seasons with Seattle, earning 10 of his 13 All-Star berths and all 10 of his Gold Glove Awards while with the team. The Kid, elected to the Hall of Fame in a landslide this year, becomes the first player to have his digits immortalized by the club.

2016 Giancarlo Stanton drives a pitch thrown by Rockies starter Chad Bettis deep into the Rockpile seats, a 504-foot blast that becomes the longest round-tripper in the 21-year-old history of Coors Field. The Miami Marlins slugger's fifth-inning solo shot in the team's 12-6 loss surpasses the 496-footer hit in 1997 by Dodger catcher Mike Piazza off current Colorado bullpen coach Darren Holmes.

2019 Blue Jays' shortstop Bo Bichette becomes the first player to collect ten extra-base hits in his first nine major league games when he doubles off Ryan Yarbrough in the team's 7-6 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field. Tomorrow, the 21-year-old rookie shortstop will hit another two-bagger, becoming the only major leaguer to stroke a double in eight-straight contests, breaking the mark established in 2000 by former Toronto first baseman Carlos Delgado.

• • 1877 - The National League rule calls for the home team to submit three names of approved local men for each game, with the visiting team choosing one at random to be umpire. Today in Louisville, Chicago's Cal McVey reaches into the hat and picks out a slip bearing the name of Dan Devinney, who accused St. Louis of trying to bribe him five days earlier. Disgusted, McVey then grabs the hat and finds that all three slips have Devinney's name on them. The incensed White Stockings demand a new umpire and then snap the Grays' six-game winning streak 7-2.
  • 1894 - Sparks from a plumber's torch start a blaze that destroys the grandstand at Philadelphia's Huntingdon Grounds, better known as Baker Bowl. The grandstand will be rebuilt with concrete and steel.
  • 1901 - The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues is formed to help the minor leagues protect their interests.
  • 1904 - Lefthander Nick Altrock of the White Sox (their new nickname) handles thirteen fielding chances, the modern major league record for pitchers. He will finish the year with 49 putouts, an American League record for pitchers.
  • 1908 - Johnny Lush pitched a six-inning no-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0. It was Lush's second no-hitter against the Dodgers.
  • 1941 - Detroit pitcher Al Benton collects two sacrifices in one inning, a major league record.
  • 1949 - Luke Appling appears as shortstop in his 2,154th game, surpassing Rabbit Maranville's major league mark. Appling will play in 2,218 games at shortstop.
  • 1952 - Satchel Paige, at 47, became the oldest player in major league history to pitch a complete game or a shutout when he beat Virgil Trucks and the Detroit Tigers, 1-0, in 12 innings.
  • 1953 - Ted Williams is back in a Red Sox uniform after military duty in Korea. He will finish with 13 home runs and a .407 mark.
  • 1967 - Against Chicago, Brooks Robinson of the Orioles hits into the fourth triple play of his career for a major league mark.
  • 1972 - Atlanta's Hank Aaron hit his 660th and 661st career home runs to break Babe Ruth's record for most home runs with one club. The 661st came in the 10th inning to give the Braves a 4-3 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds.
  • 1973 - Roberto Clemente and Warren Spahn head the list of new inductees at Cooperstown. Clemente is the first Latin-born player to achieve membership at Cooperstown.
  • 1981 - After a seven-week strike, major league baseball players approved a split-season format. The New York Yankees, Oakland A's, Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers were declared the first-half champions and automatically qualified for the divisional series.
  • 1982 - Just five days after hitting three home runs in a 5-4 loss to the Twins, Doug DeCinces hits three more home runs in a 9-5 win at Seattle. DeCinces is the first player other than Ted Williams to hit three home runs in a game twice in the same season.
  • 1985 - For the second time in five years the Players' Association stages a midseason strike. But unlike the 50-day strike that interrupted the 1981 season, this one will be settled by the following day and all 25 canceled games will be made up.
  • 1986 - The Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles, 13-11, in a record-setting battle of grand slams. Texas' Toby Harrah hit a grand slam in the second inning before Larry Sheets and Jim Dwyer connected for grand slams in Baltimore's nine-run fourth.
  • 1988 - Oakland Athletics outfielder Jose Canseco became the 11th player in major league history to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in a season. Canseco, with 31 homers, stole second base with one out in the ninth inning for his 30th as the A's edged the Seattle Mariners, 5-4.
