But the comparison is valid to highlight the absurdity of the rule, no? Neely ARRGH!s at the Georgia batter after striking him out, and he gets treated like (or possibly worse than) a football player called for targeting. Absolutely ridiculous, people need to be called out for thinking it's appropriate (not talking about anybody here, but people who agree with such a rule including the umpire).

    Absolutely.

Sure, both the rules and enforcement are f&*3ed up. In every sport I’ve ever watched. I don’t like what happened, but I know why it happened, and I know what you can do to avoid it 99.9999% of the time.

*I don’t think they should ever automatically be out for multiple games. That should be a case by case basis, and should pretty much require that you laid hands on someone. I don’t like them being booted in football for accidental contact that nowadays is caused by the runner 80% of the time. I really don’t like that they can also lose a portion of their next game. A lot of those plays are unavoidable too, which makes the punishment that much worse. You can easily celebrate with your guys after a big play, but it’s pretty hard to change direction when you’re going full speed and commit to hitting a guy in the chest and then he decides to duck his head right before contact.

Maybe the SEC will review the tape and do away with the 4 game suspension. That's ridiculous considering. Not counting on it, but hoping.

Especially since that part of the rule seems meant to punish a starting pitcher, and make sure he loses a chance to play in one game.

Wes, I rewatched several times. I take back my original comments Neely never should have been tossed. Didn’t say any of the magic words, was quick about it, and moved towards his dugout. At most, maybe a warning. Blue should just reminds pitchers and batters to move along to their dugout. If one team continually overdoes it on mound warning first.

It was directed at their dugout, and he did yell twice.

It still feels excessive to me, especially when the effects the day after are that he will basically miss the entire usce series now if I'm reading that correctly? 4 game suspension would mean FAMU and the entire usce series.

I thought Cag's celebration after the HR was great. Very funny! But, I also thought there was a possibility he would get thrown out too. I know how crazy it sounds, but he was clearly attempting to show up the Ump and it was clear the Ump had a quick trigger. Again, not saying he should have been, but the thought crossed my mind that it was possible.

I can’t take credit for that one. Not sure who coined it, but I’m just borrowing it. I suspect you might also like another, less forum friendly, version that starts with a “p “

For what it's worth, I went back to watch the top of the 9th from Friday last night. The same kid that Neely struckout hit the GR double to give the Dwags the lead. He pretty aggressively celebrated from 2nd base (honestly, nobody noticed it at the time because it should not be a thing...only mentioning it in context to Neely's celebration). It appeared to me that he was looking at the P rather than at his dugout (could be wrong). By no means do I think any action should have happened to that kid for his celebration, but I think it shows disparity in how the game is called by the exact same crew. There's just no need for officiating to go down that path in my view. They have enough on their plate with calling the game, give players and coaches a long rope and there's less bother with all this stuff. Hopefully just a one off for the official, no suspension given for Neely, and a learning lesson for umpires about where not to draw the line.

theorangebluewin, what did you disagree with in my post? That Cag's celebration was great? That it was funny? That he should not have been tossed? Or that there was ZERO possibility that a quick trigger ump would see what Cag's did as a shot at him and toss him?

If Neely does have to sit 4 games then maybe any Gator that hits a homerun in the next 4 games should run around the bases like a robot. Then when they get back to the dugout add their best impression of doing the robot dance. Of course none of this would be targeted at the umps.
