The last bullet point is pure conjecture. Have not seen anything in this program that would flip it in the right direction because of the results of one game. Which by the way was poorly played on our part even before the bottom of the ninth.

 

We need a Neely mentality as the closer, not sure we have that on the staff. Maybe King..but with the injuries, its hard to get him in that role this year or if he or Sully would consider it. We have a game in 48 hours so everytime there was a pitching change, I was screaming at my TV.

 

We’ve only had one of those. I would settle for a Neely.

Philpott ain't the guy to close games. Just doesn't have what it takes. Tough loss.

 

It's easy to second guess, however I was surprised he took out Clements. I thought you would leave him in for the 8th and bring your closer in after.

 

quick turnaround bringing back Clemente from Sunday to Tuesday so that might have factored in to limiting his pitch count significantly.

 

Backseat driving for Sully is always the easy way out. I agree with not sending Clemente back-Sunday to Tuesday is short rest for sure.

And let’s be realistic, Philpott had a 3 up/3 down eighth striking out the side. They had their 7-8-9 hitters due up in the 9th.
No, it couldn’t have gone more wrong—but who really expected a change at the start of the inning when it was set up like that?

 

One positive I can see at the moment..the series is tied so far and we still have a chance to win the series..they aren't sweeping us like they did last year..

 

100% - that one wasn't on the decision maker. 7-8-9 with your closer on the mound is the perfect scenario.

Whether closer is the right role for AP is another discussion.

 

Those don’t exactly grow on trees. As we saw last night, being an effective closer goes far beyond just having great stuff.

I know the results haven’t shown it thus far, but I really like the young talented arms we have. Just have to get them dialed in and teach them (as UGA did) you can’t leave ball over middle of the plate and get away with it at this level.

 

Completely agree. They’ve got the black eye, the cut cheek with the bandage on it, and the split lip. Now they’ve got to prove to themselves that they both earned their bruises and learned from them as well.

 

The coach is responsible for team success and failure. Bear Bryant once said after a loss that the players’ failure was a sign that they were not coached properly. When pressed with a question of what if they were coached properly, he responded that the coaches failed to recruit properly. It was always on the coaches, never on the players in his view.

 

I was thinking it could have been a bullpen day for Clemente? Would getting hot and throwing 15-20 live pitches (he threw 13 I think) be a comparable simulation?

 

The bear was able to hoard talent like nobody else. He had rosters twice the size of his competition and also paid more than anyone else. He probably shouldn’t have ever lost a game. Sully doesn’t have either of those luxuries.

 

Agreed but Sully has a very talented roster. One playing well below their skill level

 

Just seems year after year it's the samo samo regarding pitching, walks, hit batters, no control. You will not win many games without good to great pitching. As it is when we are not walking or hitting batters we are giving batting practices to our opponents. It's not that we are in close games of late but we are getting embarrassed.
It makes me wonder are we way off in evaluating talent, developing talent, or coaches who at this point are on cruise control. I know Sully got us in the CWS last year by the skin of our teeth, but again pitching was the weak link.
