Ken Berry was a defense first/no hit CF that played in The Show for a few years.

When building a team you need great defense up the middle: 2, 4,6, 8. You can even have two positions not hit well if the other two are great. With the Big Red Machine Bench and Morgan were great on D and both were great hitters. Conception and Gerónimo were mostly known for their D and OK hitters. That was enough to field a great team. And they also had that Rose guy. And Tom Seaver pitching.

Damn, they were a great team.

Was Seaver really considered part of the big Red Machine? He came in latter part of the 70's and seemed to miss the bulk of the "world series type" teams. Bench, Foster, Rose, Morgan, Concepcion, Perez, Griffey is the lineup I think of

 

no, seaver was not part, although he did pitch in the 1980 play-offs
