I propose that all gun-control proponents raging on this thread give up their guns as a gesture of solidarity with the poor folks of Lewiston.

Is America today like the old Wild West? That's an insult to the old Wild West. There were plenty of bad men in the old Wild West, but they didn't go around shooting innocent citizens. Some like Jesse James have even been glorified in song and film. Oh, there were hostile Indians, of course. But we took care of America's Indians a long time ago. Of the few that remain, I don't recall a single Indian who was a mass shooter. America's mass shooters all seem to be white boys with problems. And with plenty of guns.

I don’t know if anyone is raging. More a matter of looking for solutions and prevention.

Do not forget that recently 2 of the most deadly mass shootings in the country were in TX. 29 Dead in El Paso at a Walmart (I avoid Walmart like the plague) where based on data 10’s if not 100+ were carrying. The other in Allen Texas where plenty were carrying and the body count was limited to 10? Only because a freaking hero cop ran down the gunman and shot him between the eyeballs.
Why? Because the #1 thing you can do to save yourself and family is run and hide. Also because gun owners are especially terrified people who are not particularly inclined to help anyone else and are running faster than everyone else.

Actually that’s the safest thing anyone could do. there are higher odds your gun will hurt someone by accident, used in a moment of rage on a family member\friend, suicide , etc. than used to stop some big home invasion or a Red Dawn attack that maga gun nuts sit around fantasizing about.

You do realize I was just talking about that specific post was not being a specific proposal, right?

My sister wanted a pistol for home protection, so I gave the pistol I had that had been laying around for years. It wasn't long before her son shot a hole in the side of her trailer. No one inside was hurt. The bullet was stopped by a book on a shelf.

Ok, what if they are married? Does their spouse automatically give up their second amendment right by virtue of being married to someone who becomes a prohibited person? What if they have roommates? Do those people give up their fourth amendment rights because someone they live with did something wrong?

Except in the places that were shot up. The bowling alley was a posted "no guns" location which carries force of law there and the bar is a prohibited place.

Oooh - force of law. Yeah - we all know that gun control laws are always followed.

If your roommate was dealing drugs your place could be searched. Happens every day all over this country. Same situation here. If you do not turn over the registered firearms you’ve been ordered to you are in violation of the law and thereby subject to search and seizure.

The spouse situation is trickier if the firearm is registered in both of their names but I still say tough titty. Sorry your spouse got your rights taken away.

I’ve been through this song and dance with you. You never propose solutions you just poke holes in other solutions. Again - sickening.

Only by the rational law abiding, and therein lies the problem. A "No Guns" sign will stop a lawful gun owner who rationally fears ruining the rest of his life. It will not stop someone who is irrational (crazy) or plans to either be killed or spend the rest of their life in jail

I'm saying don't point out the law unless you mean for it to be enforced like other laws would with resources commensurate with the threat to public safety. Act like those that get killed are the actual victims of a mass shooting, not those that fetishize the weaponry that is the tool of choice. Act like gun violence is a true public safety risk worth addressing with study, resources and consideration of approaches. Don't surrender and pretend that nothing can be done, and complain that talking about methods to try to prevent or even reduce mass shootings makes you a victim.

Exactly. Said more succinct than I did. Do nothing.

Meaning that the end of the day they don't give a damn and shrug at the prospect of more of the same.

False. I've proposed quite a few things in the past. They just always stop short of registration and/or bans/confiscation. That's a pretty hard line that I won't cross. The fact that you don't value your rights does not entitle you to remove them from others.

Firearms in most states are not registered. Federal registries are illegal. So remove the assumption that the firearms are registered in someone's name. Sales records exist, but aren't the same as ownership records. So how do you know whose is whose in order to enforce the surrender?

If the answer is registration, it's going to be a non-starter with the majority of the country as, among other things, it would end private transfers, provide the government with the means to confiscate, etc.

Registrations? Oh no! What if they confiscate my car or my vote?
