So much of shooting is confidence. I hope he has his best year ever.

Played hard but very soft,...was easy to push around and would play timid on defense,...hope his 3 point stroke returns

 

As I have said before and still stand by it, Lee Humphrey would not have succeeded at UF playing for Mike White.

 

It certainly helped Lee that he was on the floor with Noah and Horford. Kind of like Steve Kerr with Jordan and Pippen on the floor for the glory day Bulls.

 

Predicting a huge comeback year for Jones. Think he'll be back to being a sniper.

 

Even at PSU, he was known to be a streaky shooter, though.

 

That's definitely true. Good point. Hopefully he can be a little more consistent, but at Penn State, if he's on, you have to feed him the ball. His 2 years at PSU, he shot 40% from 3 in both years. Just getting back to that guy would be a huge boost.

 

I think I could see why he's been streaky. For the Gators, his 3 would have a higher arc for several games at a time. At other times, it would have a lower arc for several games at a time. I don't recall which went in more, but that's where consistency needs to start.
For most shooters, really high arcs don't work well, because the actual distance the ball has to travel to the hoop is longer than it is for a flat shot. Too flat, however, makes the target smaller. The optimum shot is somewhere in the middle. Not too much travel distance, not too small a target.

 

In the future, the basketball will be a drone, with a zigzag course and varying speed. Defenders will use electronic jamming to throw it off course, and destroy it if possible. The best shooters will all come from the Physics Department. And will have laser-beams in one eye.

 

The best defenders will be engineers that know aero, mechanical, EE and computer science.

Unfortunately we don't teach kids that broad skill set anymore.

And if we did they would also be the best shooters as well.

 

I don’t think anyone would disagree with you, if anything, it’s probably an obvious take. Whites offense was TERRIBLE for spotup shooters. I’m guessing an incredible # of Hump’s made shots came off assists in Billy D’s offensive system (like.. almost all of them). In the White era, we had a horrendously low % of shots coming off assists. His offense simply didn’t produce good looks. It’s why just about everyone that was supposed to be a shooter did a little worse in his offense, including some high ranked players that went into a shell.

The only guys who could ever excel in that scheme were those who created the mismatches for the “dribble drive”. This is why KJ lit it up as a small ball 4, he was a matchup nightmare, and even White was able to exploit that. Tre Mann did solidly in year 2 (not so much year 1) because he had elite 1 on 1 skills and was a scorer to win his matchup. With a pure PG or system PG the offense was ugly, because there really was no system and without a winning the 1 on 1 “matchup” there was nothing to fall back on.

 

It was tough watching Jones last year, even the untrained eye such as my own could see he struggled mightily. His shot is very unorthodox as well.

From all I've read about the charachter of the new team so far, the one area of concern is outside shooting, if thats the case, obviously we need Jones to come through in a big way.

 

KeVaughn Allen shot the 3 decently under Coach White.

Jalen Hudson had a pretty good year from the arc under White as well.

Even Keith Stone had a good year hitting at 42.4% on 92 shots.

 

But they all regressed mightily under his tutelage.

 

First, I believe that what Golden is doing is to play the pat answer and that is, if I have a choice between a high-ceiling youngster who may lose us a lot (ie, floor unknown) and a lower ceiling vet with a history of performance (ie, better known floor), you go with the vet...until the former proves their floor isn't TOO low. I call it prudent, if not exciting.

Second, I have to believe that Jones had a bit of "Noah Locke Syndrome", meaning when Mike White sped him up, his game suffered, especially all the gyrations he wanted on defense.

And lastly, if Jones has a bit of "Trey Dean" in him (which I kind of feel is what we are afraid of since we are all tired of our being stuck in the mud for so long), I have faith that Golden will do what is appropriate. He has WAY more talent at his disposal than Napier/Toney has at the safety position.

 

I'm trying to find something in there to argue about... but I really can't.
