Last weekend, several of Florida’s top targets were on campus for visits and several offensive line targets were also in town to meet with the coaching staff.

Offensive lineman Tye Hylton (6-4, 270, Oviedo, FL. High) was on campus and both he and his family had a good visit with the staff.

Sounds like the kid has his head on his shoulders, and academics may be a priority. Then he mentioned FSU.

I always chuckle when a player mentions academics. Then you find out that they major in sociology or psychology or communications. It's one thing to say you want academics for a STEM degree, but for those general BS degrees, any school will do.

When players mention academics at UF, it's mostly about academic support, which is something UF really excels at for scholarship athletes. The reason so few of them choose STEM degrees is because the commitment required for players in revenue sports doesn't allow much time for that kind of academic rigor.

UF's arts, humanities and social science programs are outstanding and those degrees will take graduates further than the same degrees at rival schools, especially for those interested in grad school. (My niece just graduated from UF last week with political science degree and starts NYU law in the fall.) If UF is fighting for prospects wanting STEM degrees, we're actually at a disadvantage against a number of recruiting rivals including Texas, TxA&M, Ohio State, Notre Dame and USC, all of which outrank UF in engineering, CS or both. Better to hang our hat on the overall academic excellence at UF and the academic support provided for football players.
