By: Eric Fawcett -- May 5, 2024 Florida already has some talented guards in place with the expected return of Walter Clayton and the commitment from FAU transfer Alijah Martin, but they aren’t finished at that position. Both Clayton and Martin are players that are better as off ball guards and while both are looking to get point guard reps, the Gators’ coaching staff is trying to bring in a proven ball handler to help lead the way. He’s considering Mike White again after passing on mike whites offense the first time? I’d pass on it again if I’m him.
I think we are a name here not a serious contender for him. It’s nice so many guys have UF as a possibility. Shows we are a place players want to play.
If this kid likes to push the ball, why would he choose Mike White and his style over Coach Golden? Not that I know anything about this specific kid, just asking. Vandy and Washington = new coaches. USC I could see though.
I don’t know that we can offer the minutes or the NIL he is looking for. We will see but that’s what I’m hearing.
Yeah I think people who are high on top-100 PGs need to remember what we can offer here. Maybe modest NIL money + A very high risk/high reward scenario. The "risk" (from the player's perspective) increasing the more talented and projected as a starter the player is. Basically the scenario we can offer is "you might see reserve minutes (If Clayton/Aberdeen/Martin are able to pick up the slack through some combination) all the way up to you might be a starter on a final four team (nobody works out and we just need someone at the position who isn't gonna limit the rest of the team by a lack of someone who can distribute and initiate)" Without a SERIOUS NIL cash bag to throw at a high end PG to make it worth that kind of risk of maybe going from a guaranteed started position to the bench, our next best option to try to find a mid-range PG who has mostly/all mid-major offers and maybe some bottom feeder high major offers. THAT is a pitch I think could work, especially in the heart and mind of a particularly competitive kid who feels like he just needs "a chance" on the biggest stage. Basically "You could take a guaranteed starter position at some mid-major and also be guaranteed the NIT as well. Or come here and have a very real chance to be the starter (If things work out a certain way) on a final four team" Ive said it before but I really envision aiming for a Scottie Wilbekin as a freshman type prospect. (though ideally a senior transfer so we arent tied down a scholly by a player who was brought in for a one role one season fit) Because if this hypothetical guard is playing, he's filling a need created by a lack of play from other guards at the PG position. We just need someone who is gonna be able to pass and distribute and take opportunistic chances so the team as a whole isnt limited by a lack of someone doing that. In other words a scenario where the team is clearly limited from a lack of Clayton or Martin to do those duties and having someone less talented (as an overall BBall player) at the PG position is addition through subtraction. So there isnt a need for a prospect that can do more than that, and quite frankly I think it would be a waste of NIL money that could better be leveraged finding a starter quality wing to sure up that position. (Even better would be a CP/Corey Brewer type wing that could play all 5 positions in a pinch - and provide yet ANOTHER option at PG by being one of those amazing ball handling wings - Ironically IIRC Chandler was actually Scottie's backup at the PG position freshman year because of a lack of guards in general and CP was such a great ball handler he was basically like a huge guard)
watched 100 Michigan State games the past couple of seasons...I'm a big fan of Izzo, and my girlfriend is a huge Sparty fan, so we watch em all. Hoggard is NOT a pass first guy. He is not a team guy. He is not a coachable guy. He is a team killer. I would hope to not see him in blue and orange.
looked up his stats this past season and his numbers do not bear you assessment. His numbers compared to Pullen in (): shot attempts per game 9.5 (10.8), 3 pt shots per game 2 (2.4), assists 5.2 (4.9). ZP was more accurate 2 pt 41% (44%), 3 pt 35% (45%), but his shooting was certainly not what I would call "team killer" numbers.
Overdribbler. Me-first guy. Would not take coaching from Izzo. ..yes I love Izzo ..but realize he's not for everyone Score first, score second, involve teammates third. If his shot is not falling, he doesn't involve other guys. looks guys off (the worst) y'all don't know me from Jonas, but that's just my observations.
First, come around more often and we'll get to know you better. Second, I trust Coach Golden and his assessment of players and how they would fit his vision and the team's chemistry. I'm not saying you're wrong since I've never seen this kid as far as I recall but if he comes to Florida Coach saw something and met with him and we'll hope for the best (as always). PS -- If he won't pass, he can get to know his new friend, Mr. Bench, much better.
I don't care if you are a newbie or the grandaddy of NBN, if I disagree, I will say so and his numbers do not agree with your assessment. He had more assists per game that ZP and took fewer shots per game. How does that translate into score first and second, involve teamates 3rd?
