I generally root for conference success in the tourney. But I often have at least a couple teams I despise, typically bc of the coach. Oddly, the conference really doesn’t have any coaches I really dislike now. Even Cal has become somewhat benign at Arky. I’ve never liked Pearl and can’t stand Baker-Mazara. And there are a couple UT players I don’t like. So I think those would be the only two I root against this tourney. You?
If they all lose but us, then we’ll be the only team the SEC network is talking about. So that would be kind of nice to not have to share the spotlight. .
Tricky question in my eyes. The SEC doing good in the tournament increases the already high value wins we had on the season. I also look at it as Id rather them knock some teams out because the more SEC teams WE have to play, the higher the chances of us winning it all are since we know for a fact we can beat all of them (Kentucky being the only one we didn’t beat this year, but I’m very sure we can). So when I look at it like that, yes I want the SEC to be successful. But I’m not all SEC, SEC, SEC! IF the Gators get knocked out at some point. I could care less who wins outside the Gators. the Bama coach is the only coach I don’t like and I think that more stems from his comments about his player bringing a gun to someone else so they could shoot someone. I actually don’t mind Bruce Pearl, I’d welcome him in at Florida if we didn’t have CTG.
I am. It definitely makes the SEC look better if we win- which means more accolades but also (I would think) more recruits/ transfers because they want to come play with the best. Plus- why not? I prefer Arky over Kansas, or Mizzou over Drake (not that I cared much), or OU over UConn. Exception- I wasn't rooting for UGa because its UGA.
I am. I tend to though, most years, even outside of self-serving reasons. When a team is as good as y'all are this season, I don't think you really need the conference to be great or be viewed as great. But in years when an SEC team isn't so dominant, it helps an incredible amount. Haven't we seen this in the big 10 in recent years? They weren't legitimately great (like this SEC has been this year) but most people, and metrics, seemed to think that they were. This changed the narrative when one of their teams lost. Instead of lots of teams with losses it's just "a crazy tough conference beating each other up." We saw it with the SEC this year for sure. I don't want the SEC to flop in the tournament this year. Aside from this though, I'll cheer against the SEC when it helps my team. If UK beats Illinois, I'll be cheering against Tennessee for sure, given that we'd have less of a chance of beating them, etc.
Right now, I would like the maximum number of SEC teams making the Sweet 16. That would legitimize the effort needed to come in second in the regular season and win the SECc tourney. Duke does not get to get those accolades this year. Probably neither does Houston. After that, I will probably root against the upper-echelon teams just because I don't want too many (if any) revenge games. Auburn is the one that most comes to mind. Bama too.
Sorta, more so in all sports except football, SEC football history is rather insufferable considering what some SEC members have done to hurt UF.
To some extent. I was rooting for uga to lose, but would like to see the SEC well represented in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. After that, I only want the Gators to do well. If the SEC bombs out early, it will dimish our accomplichment and bolser tudrs like Danny Kannel to rag on us. I hope the ACC is gone the first weekend (Miss State knocks off dook).
Nope, conference fandom is weird. When Florida wins it all who cares what people think about the conference.
Absolutely yes!! Every SEC win against a non-SEC team reaffirms the strength of the league, and adda value to our Championship of the league.
I think conference strength has a direct impact on ncaa bids. And so, a strong SEC helps all its participants. I think this is also true with recruiting. I don’t doubt for a moment that TG will be selling Florida’s place in THE powerhouse conference.
I think of the bigger picture. If all of us went into the tourney with the hope that every SEC team lost except us, that works against us for the future. The light is shining on the SEC, did we deserve 14 teams or are we the most overrated conference ever seen? We won't know until after Sunday's games so if everybody but us lost, then most likely the SEC doesn't get half the bids going forward, which could bite our Gators or maybe we won't have as many 1 and 2 seeds.
