Once per decade or so it is worth revisiting the famous 1930 economists’ letter on Tariffs. 1,028 economists — a huge proportion of the number then around — signed the following, urging President Hoover to veto the Smoot Hawley tariff. We know how it turned out. No, we did not win that trade war.

 

How are the goals unclear? What were the goals of the last administration?

 

Is it to eliminate tariffs? Is it to have tariffs so high they equal out the trade imbalance by making the trade near zero? Is it to move critical wartime production of athletic shoes and sock to the US? You tell me?

Maintaining low barriers to trade but responding to unfair trade practices in countries such as China and honoring trade free agreements with MFN status with places like Canada and Mexico. Just like it has been for decades.

 

comparing this to surgery is comical. Surgery is targeted and precise. It’s planned and practiced. This is straight up spaghetti on the wall. There is no plan it’s just doing shit and reacting as things change.

you know what I’m actually ok with? Military spending and border security. That’s fine. But what else is there to like? Hard to like his appointments that are obviously loyalists rich people over patriots - like is that even arguable? He’s isolated the country from allies, weakened the dollar, unsettled the global market, is attacking education, having masked police pull students off the streets, like… honestly wtf am I supposed to like about what I’m watching? Objectively? As a liberal? He is not exactly a middle of the aisle policy guy right now. I like his hard line on Iran that’s 3. Three things I like. So there. Good job

 

most don’t like Trump making our country weaker. Or wanting to explode our debt.

 

It is important to note the market crash of 1929 preceded any legislation in 1930. So, the Great Depression was not caused by tariffs. Tariffs were proposed after the market had already crashed.

It is also important to note that market crashes happened with some regularity in those days and that the only one that became a depression was the one in which a massive tariff tore apart global trade.
