The Japanese language had no indigenous writing system, and they borrowed from Chinese characters. Over time, the Japanese adapted the characters to create modern written Japanese. This was cool to me since Japanese and Chinese are not linguistically related; they have different grammar, syntax, and phonology. For example, Chinese languages/dialects are tonal while Japanese is not.
