Exactly. I have been using this comparison for a while, but not enough people remember #15 Wayne Peace.
Good comparison. He was there when I was in school. High completion percentage, good game manager, moved the ball and won some games, and was briefly a fringe professional player. Coached HS football in Lakeland. You can still buy State Farm insurance from him there.
I remember him...we also had Bob Hewko and Dale Dominay as QB...wasn't Roger Sibbald also a QB back then but changed over to defense?
My biggest fear for Anthony is of course concussions. He will not last very long taking some of the hits he does. It is a brutally physical league. He has amazing straight line speed, but is not slippery or elusive like a Lamar Jackson. I hope he has a long successful career, but he’s on a bad team with bad oline protection
AR is doing amazing. I thought he could have used 1 more year and I wanted him to come back and beat UK and others. But clearly I was wrong. He's really stepped up. What a contrast to Bryce Young. I am a Panthers fan and Young is completely over his head. Maybe he gets better and I'm sure the coaching doesn't help, but the early returns are AR>>>>> Young.
I was a young Gator, so I remember Wayne Peace the best. My aunt seemed to have a crush on Bob Hewko. It was not until I was older that I found out that Hewko was the starter for about three games until he was injured. I remember that there were three Hewko brothers who played for Florida, but I do not know anything about them. My son likes Bob Hewko because for the longest time that was the only Gator lefty QB until some guy named Tim Tebow showed up. The other reason Hewko's name sticks in my head is that I was told that the Gator fans never stormed the field, except in the case of Bob Hewko beating FSU in Tallahassee. I remember stories that Roger Sibbald was another freshman QB, but he moved over to safety. Dale Dorminey is another QB that I remember hearing about, mostly as the backup QB who finally earned a starting spot before getting injured and ushering in the era of Kerwin Bell. All that to say: Anthony Richardson and Graham Mertz are part of a long line of interesting Gator QBs and it is good to go back into history so we do not forget about the lesser known ones. If I recall correctly, the Hewko brothers are all active on campus with alumni meetups and fundraisers. Modern fans should know some of this history in case they bump into these Gators.
