Shocker. Does BN do a good job designing and calling plays, the answer is yes. As we all know our biggest issue has been on D. The question is will good enough get it done? That's certainly debatable but personally I don't think so. We should have the talent alone to win 8 or 9 games. My concern is that might be our ceiling with BN being the OC. We have so much talent on O, that I'm afraid we will miss out with BN controlling the O. Once his scripted plays are done, it appears he has issues making adjustments. His situational play calling imo is suspect. I know a good number of people will be happy with 8 or 9 wins based on our last several years but I would hope we aspire for more than that. I wonder how many top teams would ever really consider BN or hire him as their OC? Even during the sun coast period his O was barely outscoring other teams. I'm afraid in his mind he thinks he's SOS or doesn't want to admit to himself or anyone else that this is not his strength. Now, lest I be called a BN hater, the fact is he is talented in so many other areas. He is a great recruiter and evaluator of talent. His character seems to rub off on the team. I love for him to succeed but I also want UF to compete for championships and I just don't see it with him as OC. But who knows, even if he were to hire an OC would he hand pick someone who would design and call plays similar to what he has done or would end up micromanaging. O well, not my decision just rambling.
He was never hiring an OC. The only reason it was out there that he was is because fans know he needs one. He will ride or die with himself. Let him have it, we will see. Can’t control it anyway.
Well we were 12 out of 16 in the conference for yards per game and 11 out of 16 in the conference for points per game. Normally you would fire an offensive coordinator at UF for that kind of production. On defense we were 15 out of 16 for yards allowed per game and 12 out of 16 in points per game. Those are some sobering stats.
Apparently based on what? Have we learned something that we didn't know before or is this just more rehash of the same?
This is a short window with DJ as our QB, 1-2 years. A bright young OC would make a world of difference. It's just like the Special Teams malfunctions, took 2 years to rectify.
If Stricklin mandated Billy hire a 'real' OC to continue his employment after averaging 6 losses per year and he ignores it then he's in breach of contract. And if Stricklin doesn't enforce his terms of continued employment he should also be subject to termination. Just that simple.
I disagree that it's Stricklin's job to force BN to hire an OC. It is Stricklin's job to hire a coach that performs well. If he has to dictate how the organization is managed he needs to instead fire the executive managing said organization. If he doesn't he is effectively trying to do two jobs, kind of like our HC/OC is. And as you can see that just leads to two mediocre performances.
Do you believe that's accurate, that in a HC's contract the HC must follow direction of the AD or contract is "broken"? A HC could also interview some candidates but not hire one, only to satisfy the requirement that he try.
Maybe if he gets Fred Taylor and three NFL receivers he will start scoring 40 points a game. And maybe DJ will develop and be as good as Wuerflle
This horse has been beat to death. But I will play. BN has many virtues, but as the sign over my desk said, "Part of being smart is knowing what you are dumb at!" That is his weakness.
Knowing every year our QB misses games (and seasons) I will contend our backup isnt on the same level as DJ and when DJ misses time (which he surely will based on our past history) we will see what the team looks like when the new QB runs the BN plays without threat of the long ball or dynamics of Lagway and I will tell you check out that Texas game. Thats the hill BN wants to die on and he will. If he is that stupid to think he is a SEC caliber play caller (and he damn sure isnt) he needs to be exposed and discarded like the last coaches who refused to address their shortcomings.
Myself, I reached the conclusion last off season, when the OC hire didn't happen, that Billy was going to call the plays, no matter how loud the shouting for an OC from the fan base. As you folks have pointed out, it's on CBN for the offense to sink or swim now.
Gotcha, I was hoping he was more of an evolving coach that sees the need to be more of a CEO of the entire football program and let someone else (OC) call the plays.
50th in RZ Offense and 64th in Scoring Offense is not going to cut it unless your Defense is consistently very good. I really liked our Defense second half of season but that it took some mutiny and a come to Jesus meeting with our HC to arrive there is/was just weird. Re RZ offense: The issue with ours was settling for FGs, which affected our Scoring Offense rank. Need more TDs and trips to the RZ. For example, Ohio State had 56 RZ possessions and 43 TDs 76%, georgia had 60 and 42 TDs 72%. We had 51 and 33 TDs, a decent number but 64% TDs. If we would have had 10 more TD possessions it would equal 70 more pts to spread over the season and who knows how many additional games we win. But had that happened or if it happens this season, we would be 20ish in Scoring Offense. I would like to be able to break down the difference between Mertz's possessions and DJs. DJs were probably much higher so that makes me hopeful he gets us those extra points per game.
