Remember, the play-offs are not the Top 12 teams. Probably more like the Top 7, maybe 8. They take the highest rated conference champions (5), whether they are all the way back at #20, #27, maybe even #30? . . . and slide them in ahead of #10, #11, #12. SEC and Big Whatever champs will be in the Top 4 but 3 more get in and if scUM loses they can fall and maybe the ACC "champ" will be around #20.

If I am wrong about this, somebody please tell me. I'm still trying to figure out why the keep saying it's the "Top 12 teams" when it never was.

    You are correct.
What you see it the pic is a reseeding 1-12

I took it from this article

Well there goes my theory because Texas probably stomps Iowa st. I thought it was top four teams but I guess the make believe p4 champion gets a buy regardless of rank?

I didn’t realize the wanker conferences got auto buys, just thought they got bids.

Hmm I guess I kinda like it. The teams with buys aren’t the best four teams but the five sec teams make it possible to be an all sec final four.

The "top" 4 get byes -- even if one is ranked #20 (I think). The last one gets stuck in as the last seed maybe . . . but still gets in. That's what it looks like from @96Gatorcise re-seeding brackets and what he told us.

I thought top four would be ranked top four but I like this better I think. It’s not a lot of forgone conclusions other than the acc and big 12 getting a buy before they get beat.

Are they using the AP poll to determine playoff bids? I am reading about "rankings" but they don't clarify which ones. I take it this means that there is no longer a committee.

I still think there is a CFP poll that will be used. What I posted was an AP writer using the CFP rules. One of those this is what it looks like right now articles.

So a poll that is run by the committee?

I realize that this is early and some kind of a projection, but Iowa St (ranked 16 in the AP) with the #4 seed and a bye? I've said it before and will continue to. The bye week is dumb in a 12-team format.

I would assume just like last year but picking 12 instead of 4. It is their rules.

    From the article:
The CFP selection committee starts ranking teams in November, but for now, the breakdown via the AP Top 25:

The 12 teams in the playoff include the 5 highest ranked conference champs, and the next 7 highest ranked teams, according to the playoff committee's rankings (not the AP poll, but that's all we have today). The top 4 seeds and byes go to the top 4 highest ranked conference champs.

The 5th conference champ doesn't automatically get the 12th seed, its just likely to play out that way since that team is mostly likely coming from outside the P4. But if Boise St won out they could be a top 10 team at that point and either avoid the 12th seed or even earn one of the byes if they were ahead of the Big 12 or ACC champ.

I’m positive that whoever the #13 team is, they’ll complain about not getting in.

They’ll have a legit complaint for being left out for Iowa st. Well, maybe not.

With a 12-team format, you HAVE to have byes or it won't work. I'm undecided on how it's actually going to work out. I don't like having bye weeks as well, but it kind of makes sense seeing as how a lot of the playoff teams will have an extra game with their conference championship games. We'll see how it plays out...

Does anyone know how long the 12 team playoffs is guaranteed to be around (meaning what's the least amount of time before it could actually change)?
