IMO - it’s a loss as he is an upper class men with some experience and at least average at his role and probably ascending with his best football yet to come. However, in spring, Princely was moved to edge - the same edge role that Powell plays and Princely was the nominal starter at end of spring. Princely was too small to do a decent job setting the edge on the strong side so he is no longer the strong side DE. Powell went from starter to at worst 2nd team with chance to earn starter reps in the fall but…he is by far the lightest of the edge guys. All of the edge guys are now 260 plus…maybe Powell doesn’t fit the new DCs idea of edge players size and role. Maybe he had a dust up with the coach. Not sure and will probably never know but I would have preferred to have him as an option on the roster.
I assume that tweet from Princely translates to say that Powell and Peterson did not get in a fight, right?
We used to have a great defense up until about 4 or 5 years ago...then Grantham took us from a 4 man front to a 3 man front. Toney had us in that same scheme too. Austin Armstrong had a presser explaining that we will go mainly to a 4-2-5... basically ditching the defense that has killed our defensive greatness for several years now. And that downfall all started with Grantham and his 3 man front. It's the difference between playing a passive "bend but don't break" nonsense defense to an attack rushing front and and a man press back-end... In the end we get more sacks, INT's and more turnovers out of that kind of defense. Plus or defense gets off the field quicker than that passive "bend back mountain" defense. Yes, it's a freaking HUGE "YUGE" DEAL....
Seems we ran a 4 man front most of last season…but I drank a lot. Are there any real stats out there on it?
Fear not, do you remember when we had great defenses just a few years back? That's what we're going to be like in this new scheme. That new scheme has the fans, players and recruits all fired up about our defense and AA - our DC.
Sure, just seems like most of the year we had a line that consisted of something similar to princely-dexter-Watson-cox with miller and burney
It's hard to believe that a simple change in scheme can make that group better, but it's true. There a literally hundreds of "tweaks" to formations and schemes that can change the defense for the better. I believe that AA knows how to fix our defense and he knows how to get the best out of the players we have on the defense.
