The story is the cop thought the kid was someone he tried to pull over the day before but successfully escaped

The crazy thing is they originally charged the kid for “assaulting the police officer with his door”! This is why body cams need to be mandatory. Pretty clear evidence here this cop needs to be charged with a multitude of crimes, possibly including attempted murder. If not for the body cam they’d probably take the word of this lunatic cop.

I know it’s probably their “training”, but I also get a kick out of these yah00 cops screaming “shots fired!, shots fired!” after their own bad shoot and nobody else.

Whether the kid is guilty of anything or not, this should not be the way we police.

    Officer already released.

His gf in the passenger seat is lucky she wasn't hit. I can see the FOP fighting to get his job back.

Not defending the cop but when are people going to learn if they simply put up their hands and say I'm sorry officer but what did I do 99 times out of 100 things will be cleared up one way or the other shortly.

It doesn’t even look like this kid had a chance to do that. This officer was totally out of line. Attempted murder should apply.

What will be even worse will be if, like Chauvin, there were earlier instances of bad policing that he committed and they protected him.

I think this guy was still in the probationary period, and if so, I think this is his first (last) time being a cop.

From what I understand, the car that he chased the night before was because of a misdemeanor tag infraction. So, the dude didn't verify anything, called in the plate but didnt wait for a reply, called for back up but didn't wait on them, didn't pull his cruiser behind the car or anything like that, snatched the door open, didn't identify himself, put himself in the path of the open door, and then proceeded to fire 5 or so rounds into the car once he was longer in danger, then fired 5 or so more into the back of the car that contained another teenager. Fail. Fail. Fail.

When the kid got to the hospital, they charged him with fleeing and assault on a police officer. Those have since been dropped.

This police officer sucked ass at his job and as a result a 17-year old is about to die.

The bright side is that they canned this piece of garbage immediately instead of the usual paid desk duty while we investigate ourselves.

The officer can't just open the door without probable cause that there is a crime being committed at the moment. He opened the door because he thought the car looked like one that got away from him on a different day.

If a suspect is using the car as a weapon, the police can shoot. The car wasn't being used as a weapon when the officer started shooting. He may have been backing up prior to the shots but the officer wasn't in danger when he started shooting.

We always hear that cops are trained to shoot to kill. Once one shot is fired it than becomes life or death and the fleeing person is now in self preservation mode.

I believe once one round is popped off anything after that point should be free of a fleeing charge. He is shooting to kill you
If you werent fleeing before the first shot, then you aren't fleeing once It's do or die

Now any damage or injury caused by your fleeing becomes a separate issue. But its flee or die once the pops start. It's in the training.

And do we know what type of uniform this cop was wearing? Some cops are in polos these days. Kids door was ripped open and he saw a gun. What was he supposed to do??

This is straight up murder (if the kid dies). This cop should never see the light of day again.

That in itself should tell you how egregious his actions were. Police department took one look at the footage and were like "Damn not even we can defend this"

I agree that is why I said I am not defending the cop. Note in most of these situations I do not make that statement but this one was pretty obvious. It still doesn't change the fact that if the kid had not put the car in reverse he would probably still be alive.

there are 700k cops in the US. That’s the Swamp filled 8 times over. Just imagine what you could find among the doings of a group that large.
Prosecute this cop, make police body cams a federal law, no one should get away with it and the video should make it impossible to lie about it.
But these one off videos don’t speak much to anything, besides this cop being an idiot who will soon rightfully be in jail. They do create a false narrative however of this being epidemic, which harms more than helps. I will post again that those who identify as very liberal were off by a factor of 100 on how many of these happen a year.
