Interesting read on company that just secured $70M in public funds for a new plant in Ohio. Founder of Oculus creating the newest defense contractor for the new drone wars.

Big donny boy supporter wth over $1b in contracts to date and weapons being tested, refined in Ukraine.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey is back, revolutionizing warfare with a $14 billion startup. And this time he wants you to like him | Fortune

In his new line of work, this approach “has worked out pretty well,” he says. Anduril has become the leader of a new pack of tech companies that is challenging the sector’s longtime incumbents, such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, by using private capital to innovate, rather than waiting on funding from government contracts to develop new technologies. Anduril inked a nearly $1 billion contract in 2022 with U.S. Special Operations Command for counter drones and, earlier this year, a $250 million Department of Defense contract for one of its interceptor systems. It works closely with the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.K. Ministry of Defense, and the Australian Defense Force. (Anduril’s drones have been used in Ukraine, but its technology has not been used in Gaza, Luckey said.) A 5-million-square-foot manufacturing facility in an undisclosed location is in the works. And Anduril continues to come out with new products—most recently a family of combat drones called Bolt.

I mean, as much as I hate it, this is something where the US absolutely must stay in the lead (defense in general). Especially as it relates to drone technology. This is not a race you want to lose.

Why? The only reason to want to "win" this race is so you can keep dominating people. I suppose you are correct if we are going to be the country that uses violence to get what we want.

And if another country innovates and uses that innovation to use violence against us to get what they want? Is that just our too bad and we deserved it?

I mean, I understand the logic of defense and security, but part of that is not provoking conflict or being a bully that people want to cut down to size.

True but there are times when someone wants to hit you for no reason at all. Or, wants to hit you worse than they perceived you hit them and it escalates.

Do you want a defense policy funded by taxes to anticipate the most fanciful and unlikely scenarios? How much do we have to spend to allay people's worst and most irrational fears? Alien invasion? All the countries in the world launch nukes at us at the same time? Havana Syndrome super weapons? We already have the cheapest and most effective deterrent around from actual invasion, geography and a population armed to the teeth at their own expense.

I mean, as much as I dislike the sentiment, I would rather be on the side of the people doing the dominating rather than the side of people being dominated. And so far this still seems like a binary choice in the broader world order. And I think we can all say, if we can be objective observers for a moment, that as soon as the US is not dominant, whatever a dominant group decides to do to us, we will have it coming. Sooooooo I'd rather just be dominant.

Yikes. This is like the shit the white South Africans said when they didnt want to end apartheid. I mean, if this is the way most Americans feel, I cant really blame anyone for attacking us. No wonder we put people like daddy Trump in charge, we are just a bunch of cowards who want the bully on our side.

Except what I want isn't really an option, world leaders with thin skin not acting like a bunch of jack-a-loons.

Literally how all evil and depravity is justified: "they're just gonna do it to you"

Again with the self flagellating bullshit. Aww, we're so oppressive. I'm sure China or Russia (or anybody for that matter) would be so much kinder and the world would just be Eden revisited without the bad 'ole USA. Get over the pie in the sky. It's not happening. The Coke commercial is never happening. So, you either capitulate to the mindset of the CCP or Putin or you fight for yourself and what you believe in.

No, we are not perfect. Yes, we are better than any possible alternative we currently know about. I don't know how you could live through the last 5 years and not see this.

How is your "kill or be killed" BS better than any alternative? That's literally just evil dude. Its just primeval thinking. Might as well just be a Nazi at that point. Just the struggle to dominate or be dominated. That's fascism.

We are not doing a damn thing anyone else wouldn't be doing in our situation. Frankly, most would be far worse with the same power. World's about to find out just how much of a "bad guy" the USA was when the USA goes away and all Hell breaks loose and the USA isn't there to save the day. Of course, then we'll be the bad guy because we didn't intervene. No win situation.

    That's just LIFE!

You live in a fantasy world. One many of us believed possible during the halcyon years of the Post WWII era, but one that rational people have come to realize was always a fantasy. Be happy you lived through that epoch. It's probably the greatest in human history. But it's over. Clearly over, and it's take care of yourself time.

That's life according to fascists, barbarians and savages. There is nothing rational about assuming everyone is going to kill you if you dont dominate them. That is the opposite. Rationality cant function in that world. What's the point in an exchange economy if you assume the other guy is going to club you and take your stuff? You should just club them first right?
