Wow! That is shocking news. Jay Wright had turned Villanova into a powerhouse. Villanova coach Jay Wright seriously considering retirement after 21 years leading Wildcats basketball
Who here would not want to retire with 20 mil in there bank account? I could fish, hunt and play golf 7 days a week.
Didn’t think about that, but it’s something to think could have been a factor. College Basketball just lost a good one.
“Fresh off his fourth Final Four appearance, Wright is deciding to walk away from the grind of college basketball. Privately, he has shared frustrations with some of the significant changes with the way the sport operates. It's not that Wright is against the idea of the transfer portal or name, image and likeness rules, but rather all that comes with those things, the way recruiting is in this era, and what it means to be a power-conference coach who's expected to perform at the highest of levels on an annual basis. He's also gone through some burnout with the grind of the job, one source said.”
Thanks for the info and I can see where it’s a grind. I love College Basketball, but I would not want to coach it. The recruiting, the AAU, the agents, some of the fans, the uncles and now NIL & the Portal. Always wished there was someway we were going to get him here, but it was never gonna happen.
Guy has his head on straight. Doubt you will see him back in the spotlight other than perhaps as a commentator.
Probably should have said the "uncles." Also, I agree this is not a happy surprise but predictable give the atmosphere college sports has created.
Once florida was out of the tournament Villanova was always one of the easiest teams to root for. A good guy in a blue blooded cesspool. Gave me hope that someone other than UNC, Duke, Kansas etc would win a title. It will be interesting to see what happens to Villanova now that he's gone.
