Amendment 3 - Everybody Must Get Stoned

If “we don’t know”, then what is the justification for locking people up and putting them in jail? Seems to me if we are going to deploy a police state against… {checks notes}… a plant! We ought to be able to say something a lot more conclusive than “i don’t know if we can trust people”. And you fancy yourself as a conservative!

Particularly nuts considering as a country we definitely figured out prohibition of alcohol was never going to work out. It’s baffling that all these years later people can’t figure out the “war on drugs” is basically just not applying the lessons learned from alcohol prohibition. The U.S. has spent over a trillion cumulative dollars on the “war on drugs”. For what? Millions of people incarcerated for doing the equivalent of having a few beers. For what? At minimum, it’s incredibly stupid to waste any resources at all on Mary-Jane while we’ve seen opioids and Fentanyl explode.

 

It wasn't the Dems, it was this guy who also testified before Congress. He was the Director of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (the predecessor agency of the DEA) and was considered a hero in the war on drugs (decades before that term was actually used).

I can see not allowing people to grow their own and sell on the side of the road (that’s just the reality how the world works in a lot of businesses). But even that isn’t something we need a police state over. I’d view it like almost like an unauthorized “raw milk” dairy stand or something, not something you’d send in SWAT over.

But certainly for personal use a person should basically be free to do whatever they want, aside from DUI considerations or smoking inside public buildings. Nothing should be criminal about possessing a plant. It’s asinine.

 

Now do alcohol...the damage caused by alcohol is exponentially worse

 

The U.S. is slowly morphing into 1800's China, addicted to drugs and lacking ambition. China was the wealthiest country in the world in the 1700's. They were arrogant, just like we are, and assumed that nothing could possibly change their good fortune. They were one of the poorest in the world (per capita, certainly) by the early 1900's. What happened? First the British, and then other countries (including the U.S.) started smuggling opium into the country. Those countries made a fortune off the trade, while China slid into the crapper. I'm sure they didn't notice the slide as it was happening, as it grew slowly across the landscape. In a little over a century, they were ruined, and were ripe for a revolutionary-type takeover by first another country (Japan), and when they were set free, they were ready for their first idiot dictator to start slaughtering people left and right in the name of progress. I expect to be ridiculed for these comments, because people in a long-term situation cannot comprehend that they're actually in this situation. A frog will let you boil him in water (even though he can leap out of the pot at any time) if you increase the temperature slowly enough.

As far as the indications of psychosis occurring with drug addicts, that is a frightening thought. We cannot house and support the severely mentally ill people we have now, and you're telling me that those numbers will soon multiply? Will the tax on drugs be enough to pay for all of the new mental institutions we will need? Of course not. I would rather put Americans to work, not into a drug-induced psychosis.

 

Maybe we can get a group travel package if we toss in some of the drive by "Come On Mans" as well.

 

Other states allow for a person to grow 1-4 plants for personal use. No different than brewing your own beer.

 

I keep hearing about not being able to grow it yourself. I understand the principle. But I wonder what the % of people that grow their own is. I suspect it’s very low. I know a lot tokers, but only one of them attempted to grow it. He spent thousands on a nice indoor set up. Grew a batch. Was not as good as the stuff you can find at any dispensary, and 10x the cost due to the initial investment. Not to mention his kids kept asking what fruit he was growing and when it would be ready. Granted, he is a DIY type and he enjoyed the process more than the outcome. He shut it down after one batch.

 

There's a lot of ways to fix this but near the top would be improving our food. The crap we allow in it that other country's don't is a gigantic problem.

Otherwise, we will need everyone on a semiglutide regimen which is like fixing school shootings not by going after the guns but by teaching the kids how to cower under their desks.

 

I talk to people that are voting no for this very reason, stating you can't grow your own, like that's a major stumbling block. Like they only want something in their body that they know is pure. When I ask if they grow their own vegetables, surprisingly none of them do.

 

I'd like to see a similar post about alcohol consumption and alcoholism. I'll stick my neck out here and wager that studies have shown that alcohol has more negative effects on the users and their circle of family and friends than cannabis consumption. The effects on the health of regular users of grass and booze has got to be worse for the latter. Also, I've never had reason to fear someone high, but I sure have someone tipsy!

I don't partake of either one, but if government feels like it has to interfere in this particular instance in one's personal decisions, it ought to ban both or neither.

Exactly. They have never grown anything in their life and they are going to grow weed? lol. Growing good weed is not easy. And it reeks when flowering. So unless they have farm, they are going to be growing indoors. And unless you don’t mind your whole house smelling like a grow house, you are going to need an expensive set up.

To me it’s just an excuse or maybe people whose opinions are too easily manipulated.

 

well what you say is true do you really think it would be practical to prosecute someone for growing one to four plants when it is commercially legal? I wager you will see precisely zero of those sorts of prosecutions because no jury is gonna convict anyone on those terms

 

This is a good point too. I am not saying there’s no valid medical uses, but I know lots of people who have gotten cards and I’ve never heard about a single person being denied. The current system essentially allows recreational use for those who can pay the fees. Those who can’t or don’t pay risk arrest and jail.

Interestingly, I’ve seen copies of prescriptions for alcohol during prohibition that some people were able to get so they could drink. This kind of pay to play seems unfair, not to mention the fact that those who are least likely to be able to pay for the card are probably the most likely to get profiled and searched.

Doctor: Is the marijuana helping you with your, hmm, what was it again?

Me: hmmm, insomnia?

Doctor: looking at your file…it was back pain. How’s your back?

Me: so good I forgot I had a bad back

Doctor: great to hear, I’m renewing your prescription. Go see the nice lady up front. You get a free edible for being a repeat customer
