First of all if you're illegal you probably should be afraid to report crimes. Its not smart for "criminals" to call the police. Im all for illegal immigrants who haven't committed any crimes to become citizens in some form or another but thats not the case right now. So they are illegal and they should be scared to call the police. Its not supposed to be amazing to come in here and live illegally. That attracts more people to come here illegally, something normal people don't want.

OR you could do what is happening right now and that is places like New York under pressure from Trump are actually enforcing laws. Deporting people instead of catch and release. Some of these people are multiple offenders here illegally and everyone knows it. Yet we have people here advocating for a system that won't deport them. If you take away penalties for being a criminal, crime goes up, if you enfore laws - crime goes down. Good guys win...

Whats that about wilful ignorance and misinformation? Im simply calling yall out for having more energy to argue for people who are possibly terrorists and not caring about the thousands of women and children who die trying to crosss the border or are exploited by cartels trying to make it here. Crime declining and crime being down to extreme lows that is "historic" are two things. However, you can interpret the results how you please. No, it has been heavily militarized for a couple of decades now. It was just heavily militarized during Biden as well (likely, more so). The Border Patrol Budget was $8 billion in 2024 (which is a massive increase over previous years, it should be noted). You can add to that the billions in capital expenditures each year.

I don't invite many US citizens into my house. I would be happy to invite an immigrant that I knew and befriended into my house. No, I won't be inviting random people into my house, regardless of their immigration status. Again, it is an absurdly dumb metaphor, as I have no problem with my neighbor being an immigrant or a US citizen, but that doesn't mean that I invite them to sleep in my bed.

My US citizen neighbor could kill somebody too. I don't spend my days imagining immigrants are going to kill people any more than I do US citizens.

Fun story: I lived for two years in the same building as actual MS-13 members in Maryland during grad school (as well as about 5x as many peaceful, law-abiding immigrants). Perhaps you shouldn't assume you know about my life.

Crime was declining faster in 2024 than it has so far in 2025. The crime rate decline in 2024 was historic. And the decline in 2023 and 2022 were extremely rapid as well. 3 straight years of rapid declines lead to a low level. Who knew?

It is funny when you accuse others of being spoonfed opinions and being too partisan, then give me your opinions generated from right-wing randos on Youtube (declaring them "fair") and right-wing talking points. The goal of those videos that you watch: getting you to click on the video and monetize that click. Not accuracy. Accuracy doesn't get clicks. You know what does? Fear. Anger. Negative emotion in general. And it appears to have worked to get the clicks from you. I don't need my information from such folks.

As I stated, my positions on immigration don't resemble either major party. They are more consistent with libertarian positions about immigration. For most of the history of this country, despite concerns about how dangerous immigrants were, we had actual open borders (where you just showed up, they wrote your name and info down, tested you for a couple of diseases, and let you into the country). I am not particularly prone to in-group/out-group emotional and fear-based arguments about scary immigrants.

 

This is why I never come here to have long drawn out conversations with any of you. As the election results have shown you, you all have a big problem. You can point the finger everywhere you want but its really you people and your ideology isn't popular. You got waxed by the two time and I don't mean president, felon.

It is funny that you lob insults whenever confronted by a different perspective and imply or outright state that people holding such opinions are brainwashed, but when confronted with information that differs from what some guy on Youtube said, and that you wanted to believe, you fold into this.

Enjoy Youtube videos that an algorithm chose to make you angry/scared without having to deal with any contrarian information. I will continue engaging with topics that I find interesting, allowing me to research them effectively to generate my own knowledge and further refine my opinions, and, in turn, stating my opinion/arguments.

And as g8trgr8t said, skyscrapers are built on swamplands all the time. Hell, the tallest building in the US is built on swamplands. Large swaths of Manhattan were a combination of tidal zones, marshes and swampland. It’s actually pretty common for coastal cities.

We can't even count the instances, at this point. But here we are watching them support insanely flagrant violation of the Constitution. Four years ago we saw them tolerate trying to overturn an election.


We're sort of (way!) past the point of debate: Trump is simply a criminal, and both MAGA and the Republican Party are enablers and supporters of criminality.

Every conversation should explicitly acknowledge that.

 

If the Supreme Court rules 9-0 someone shouldn’t be deported, they shouldn’t be deported no matter what they did.

 

That doesn't seem to matter any more.
