You know, I get the sentiment. I really do. The season is about to begin, and we all want to feel a general sense of optimism, and no one likes a buzzkill when one is trying to generate a sense of enthusiasm. What would be helpful toward a more charitable discourse, though, is remembering there is an entire spectrum of optimism among the Gator faithful. Speaking for self, I think it’s fair to minister optimism based on new players, new coaches, assertions that Coach Napier has learned from the last two seasons, etc. Where you get me and others saying, “Pump the brakes” is when optimism translates into prescriptions like “Fourth season no matter what” or like you stated a few days ago with “Five to seven seasons no matter what.” That does not strike me as much wiser than calling for Napier’s head now, after the results of only two seasons. Why don’t we just see how these first couple of games, the easiest on the schedule, play out before making any prescriptions, one way or the other?

 

I speculated he might have been given a guaranteed number of years. I hope so. The wins will come.

 

I'm an old school (1965) graduate.If a coach won seven or eight games, and beat Georgia, his job was safe. Recruiting was NOT a major focus because back then players wanted to play at their home state school. Nowadays it comes down to the highest bidder.Coaches have to re-recruit players every year. Stick with Billy and we'll win there is mo other option!

 

People from out of state used to be outsiders, but there are so many transplants now that it’s a little different to be a fan of another school in Florida

You did not speculate, you made a statement. I believe you also said he only needs two or three wins “for sure”.

He is not guaranteed any number of years as HC, just that if he fails he will be paid his buyout.

You really should refrain from calling anyone a juvenile boy trying to appear smart.

That’s debatable. He may have been given a guaranteed five years unless there’s some catastrophic event that happens. That may be written into the contract.

 

I am no insider and have no information. I don’t think it’s wins and losses this year. I think it how we look on the field this year. Wins and losses start to really matter next year.

 

why speculate. What coach has ever been guaranteed 5 years? You could make the case that our HC does not seem rushed and I would agree. But that it’s because he knows he has 5 years written would be unprecedented.

 

This year the focus will be on time out management and getting the (complete) field goal time lined up at the right moment. I'm sure by now the system will at least provide that improvement.

You can be sure its written in the contract along with a lot of other things. Its called the buyout clause. Is not showing up for work a catastrophic event? No entity would be so dumb as to put language in a contract that would incentivize lack of effort. Basically only being able to buy out a coach in x number of years is if a catastrophic event occurred would be saying you're getting paid even if you provide no effort at all.
