This is interesting. Apparently some miscreant evangelical types started a Christian bible study group at an elementary school which was green lighted by the SC in 2001.

The Satan club organized by concerned parents offer a healthy alternative to religious indoctrination doesn’t ask people to worship Satan but instead encourages rationalism and science in schools.

Tip of the hat to these forward thinking parents!
'After School Satan Club' causes a stir at California elementary school

Bad branding IMO. Why? "My mama says your mama is going to burn in hell for all eternity and you with her". Would think parents would be leery of a club with such a name - maybe Running With Scissors Club or Taking Candy From Strangers Club or maybe something more to their intent: The Rational Thought Club or Science and Fun Club. No need to politicize the kiddies - the name was picked for the adults to stick it to other adults. They are elementary school students - let them be such.

True but the God squad made it political first. I’d be steamed if it was allowed in local schools..

The story does note that many people were OK with it after learning Satan would not in fact be worshipped.

Weird thing to get steamed about IMO. It’s voluntary participation.
We have a great organization doing great things here.

I don't know what they discuss or do in the meetings but is a God belief inherently political?

Another nothing burger. Worship who you want as long as it doesn’t affect someone else who’s not involved.

What exactly are "miscreant evangelical types" and is that what the pRoGrEsSiVe tOlErAnT crowd considers all Americans acting within their constitutional rights?

It is allowed in your local schools. Almost every public school has such things

what is the schools involvement? Just allowing a religious group to meet on school grounds doesn’t seem egregious. Haven’t they been doing that forever? And is a satanic group something you want your children involved in? Per definition “characterized by extreme cruelty or viciousness”. Obviously their right, but is this using children to make a political point.?

I don’t see the problem with either club; they are after school & voluntary. I am sure that my kids public HS had lots of religious clubs & they met during lunch. Neither succumbed to silliness

Evidently- I mentioned in my original post that it was green lighted by the SCOTUS. Just happy to see a Satan club that promotes rationalism and science in our schools. All reasonable people can get behind that.

The student who lead our high school Cristian club back in the day is currently doing a 15 year prison sentence for molesting young boys. Go figure..

It isn't being taught in the schools.
Its a public building funded by taxpayers.

You may be surprised to find out how many schools have churches using their auditoriums on Sundays.

I think you are confused. The unconstitutional part would be blocking the free exercise, not allowing it

How many times to I have to repeat myself? The SCOTUS green lighted it which is why we need more Satan clubs. More rationalism, more science less religion please.

Perhaps I missed a reply, but I echo Tilly's question, why did you refer to the people who started the Christian Bible study group as "miscreant evangelical types"? It's the sort of rhetoric that ratchets up the animosty, possibly increasing the confusion over a rationalism / science group calling itself After School Satan Club. Using elementary age children it appears "concerned parents" who organized it intended it to be a mocking irritation. Not at all a "healthy" alternative.

More science - yes. Placing a figurative Satan in the picture keeps the focus on a religious villain. There is no rationality in doing it. I'm not going to send or permit my child to participate in a science club that uses a mythological symbol of evil and temptation as its avatar. It's disturbing and non-sensical.
