Adult Video Site And Texas Age Verification

    Seems that more and more states are going to be regulating internet sites and media, perhaps with as many as 50 sets of state laws on various issues such as what sites must platform and what they cannot or to whom.Should businesses be held responsible if minors lie about their age to access adult content assuming the business has attempted to verify age?

    However, in November, the 5th Circuit reversed that lower court ruling, allowing the law to go into effect. Pornhub instituted a rudimentary age-verification system—similar to those used on alcohol and tobacco sites—which simply asks a user to verify their date of birth. The AG's office countersued in February, alleging that those methods were not enough.

    Under the law, sites in violation are subject to up to $20,000 in fines per day for penalties regarding age verification, plus a $250,000 fine if any minor happens to see porn on the website. Paxton's countersuit seeks to fine Aylo for each day going back to Sept. 19, 2023, when the 5th Circuit issued its first stay on the lower court's ruling.

    Currently, 17 states have passed or proposed laws requiring porn sites to verify the age of viewers. Some states, including Louisiana, use a third-party age verification service, which Aylo is willing to comply with and currently uses. The Texas law requires adult sites to either use their own methods or a third-party service like Louisiana's to collect age-verification information like a government-issued ID. However, unlike Louisiana, Texas does not provide such a service.

    "The way many jurisdictions worldwide have chosen to implement age verification is ineffective, haphazard, and dangerous," Aylo said in a statement provided to PCMag.com earlier this year. "Any regulations that require hundreds of thousands of adult sites to collect significant amounts of highly sensitive personal information is putting user safety in jeopardy. Moreover, as experience has demonstrated, unless properly enforced, users will simply access non-compliant sites or find other methods of evading these laws."

    I agree with the age verification ruling but I don't agree with the overall law. Texas should have a third party site these areas can use, it shouldn't be the responsibility of the Company. Bad decision IMO by Texas.

    Nothing we do on the internet is truly private. Republicans should try to remember that voting is private. This way you can vote for people who don’t want to criminalize your actions.

    ahem, someone told me they were blocked in NC too so I clicked on their reprehensible site to make sure. There was a note saying the state was giving them such a rash over age verification that they (pornhub) had blocked NC residents from viewing content.
    So very overjoyed to have those who are obviously much wiser than I make these decisions for me. They know best.

    I like the idea that these people think a horny teen doesnt know what a VPN is. This will probably inconvenience more horny conservative boomers who dont know what a VPN is.

    Use a VPN and have it assign you a Canadian IP address. No stupid age verification laws.

    It’s blocked in VA too. One click in the AppStore to download “Opera” which is a free browser that includes a VPN and it was no longer blocked. This law will prevent exactly zero teenagers from accessing pornography. Hell back in my day there was a communal stash of nudie mags in the woods in my neighborhood we would all share. Uphill both ways. Horny teens will find a way.

    Woods porn is a thing. This was ubiquitous in american culture in the 80's and 90's I've come to learn.
