I was at a Dollar General near my warehouse the other day, poor part of town. The two managers up front were loudly talking about how they were going to have to shut this store down due to theft. Literally while they were talking about it a guy walked in, grabbed some stuff off the shelf and just walked out. The manager yelled, "I SEE YOU" as he walked out of the store and into a car just sitting in the parking lot. Casually drove away with his license plate in plane view.
My older sister took a job managing a Chico's store in Des Moines, Iowa when she retired from fashion retailing in NYC. She had a 60+ year old grandmother, breast cancer survivor, who worked there. Lady would arrive with a big bag every day and leave with a big bag (full) everyday. She was caught by an Assistant Manager who saw all this Chico's clothing on sale on EBay out of Des Moines. That was the story. My sister never mentioned her race - though I assume it was white as most folks are in Iowa. She claimed to steal about $3K worth of clothing...audit showed closer to $10K. Separated from the company with no criminal record. My sister said she saw the woman working at another clothing store in the same mall a few months later.
Your 2 favorites are anecdotal and nuance. Seems to be your catch all. I’m sure dollar stores loved having to trash those self checkout kiosks they bought to prevent the non existent crime that isn’t going up. Speaking of narrative. How did the recent cpi jive with your continuing babbling inflation is going down? Yeah. You were wrong on that. Again. Guessing I don’t understand the nuance of inflation right ? Seeing a theme to your prognostications. Ooh, How’s that manufactured border crisis going ? Oh yeah. Wrong on that too. City gonna city there is some good news. According to bankrate the inflation increase is only up because gas and shelter costs went up February's monthly rise was mostly due to increases in gasoline and shelter, according to Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate.
This is a problem of their own making, really has nothing to do with crime rates. They made a choice to be like "instead of hiring people to be in the store which deters theft, lets have one person in a store full of merchandise marketed towards people with lower incomes." If crime is about "means, motive and opportunity" they are just handing out the opportunity part with self-checkout. That they've figured out that was a bad idea just to save on labor costs is just realizing their own stupidity.
Sooooooo, The people Couldn’t help themselves from stealing. “dad I mean, the stuff was right there dad. And nobody was at the door so I couldn’t help myself and just walked out. It’s the stores fault dad”. Good lord man the lengths to which you will go to justify behavior borders on fantastic.
Look if you leave the keys in your unlocked car in a parking lot over night and its stolen, you can blame the thief, but I'm also going to blame you for being stupid in presenting a golden opportunity for theft. If you arent interested in protecting your property, I'm going to put some blame on you, that's just how it goes until we live a society that functions on the honor system or whatever fantasy you have.
The main image isnt from a recent NYC Costco mob theft. The article is simply that shoplifting occurs. We’ve had a lot of threads that have fizzled out because all the data point to no spike in shoplifting. NYC has been one of a few cities with increased shoplifting reports. So has Dallas.
I know for a fact all theft is quantified as all retailers are required to inventory their goods annually. Studies show 2/3rds of all theft is employees by the way. I don’t think your question was genuine though, so what are you asking?
It was a genuine question. You suggested shoplifting reports are down expect in places like NYC and Dallas. I know for a fact in our town most cases aren’t reported as the cops are too busy to come for that and the perps are long gone so management has instructed employees to not even bother calling the cops unless the perps are violent toward staff. Curious how it’s determined that 2/3 of the theft is by employees, those seem like the easiest to prevent.
All shrink is quantified makes no difference if it’s reported. You don’t see high shrink in company reports. NRF reports that and I’ve posted it on here. I need to clarify a bit. 2/3rds of shrink is employees. It’s 1/3 external theft, 1/3 internal theft, 1/3 employee controls and process. Comes from the NRF. I work closely with some retailers. No one has seen a big spike in shrink. Since costs are up when an item gets stolen it cost them more. That’s mostly what they complain about. They all have stories of organized crime but they are easier to coordinate for thieves today with technology but also easier to identify and catch. When I was in college decades ago I worked retail and they didn’t want us tackling thieves. That’s not new.
