Geography aside (Guatemala and Honduras are in C. America), your leaps of logic that are incredibly idiotic makes me wonder how you passed law schools, and subsequently, the bar exam.

Where have I said I go out of my way to travel to other countries to help them? What I did say is if I saw someone struggling locally, I would help them. Have done it before in the past, and would do it again. This help is often buying a bottle of water from the local convenience store, and perhaps a bit of food. Never give anyone money directly.

I also donate to worthy local causes. Here's one that I've donated to that brings water to people in need in metro Phoenix. If you are ever in Phoenix, you can certainly help them out. Donations of money are also always welcome. Me personally, I don't always have the time to help, and I'm no spring chicken any more. Harder for me to tolerate the heat today than 25 years ago.

Now, if you want to help those in S. and C. America, be my guest. But what they really need is reform that will allow their local economies to thrive. And that means rooting out corruption at a governmental level. Easier said than done, and generally not accomplished by missionaries on charity missions. It took Mexico several generations, but once they finally voted out the PRI party and had true competition on a political stage, other things followed. And pre-pandemic, their economy was truly the best in their history. And the effect on emigration from Mexico and immigration to the US? Down significantly.

Again, while it would be great if these things were to happen sooner rather than later in the C. American countries you speak of, and Venezuela, which actually is in S. America, I'm not going to hold my breath. In the meantime, that means more immigrants coming into this country from these places looking to work and make a living.

Fortunately, we have a demand for their labor. Unemployment is low, and in some places like Miami, FL, it's at 2%. When this happens, it often causes inflation, as competition, especially for blue collar jobs, is fierce. And one way to attract the bodies needed is to pay higher wages, which ultimately rolls down into higher costs for consumers. One way to fix this is add more bodies to do the work.

I suggest an expanded guest worker program where new entries have a 3-year work visa. After 3-years, they either return home or get another 3-year visa. After 6-years, the choice is either return home, or stay on a pathway to citizenship that takes another few years. Any serious felony offense, or combination of misdemeanors, and visa is revoked, and person is not allowed back into the country.

For those already here, tougher decision. I don't blame them for coming, but I do blame us for not having proper laws that allow supply of labor to legally meet demand. Maybe allow them a 5-year visa, and afterwards, either leave or citizenship pathway.

A noble answer to an ignoble question. Well said, as usual, AzCat.

Getting back to the subject of this thread, Abbot's policy at the border is primarily a political stunt and to the extent that it's based on logic it's very similar to Trump family separation policy i.e. make the consequences of an attempted border crossing so horrendous that it will deter attempts and like Trump's family separation policy it's predicated on dehumanizing migrants. It they're lesser human beings what the government whether the Federal government or the state of Texas may do to them is justified.

If there's one thing we know about the border crisis, it's that Democrats don't care about it unless a line can be drawn to DeSantis, Trump, or Abbott.

People don't care with respect to Biden because the (D)ude has "empathy."

    NO.
Azcat is like so many libbies here.
UFlawyer, deftly asked where you libbies go to do the real work. Why not put your money and time where your mouth is…you libbies got called out for voting and encouraging illegals to come across the border and have everyone pay for them.
Sad the libbies cannot own up to the truth. You don’t really care about illegals or you’d invite them to live in your house.

There are only about 1 billion solutions to this issue that don't start with assault or attempted murder.

Last I checked, the Statue of Liberty isn't holding an AR-15 or a Katana with a demonic gleam in her eye.

I'll take that seriously just as soon as anti-choice republicans start adopting orphans en masse.

Nonsense. UFlawyer asked a sneering, mocking question, completely absent of a genuine desire for information.

You're maligning AzCat as a "poser," because he hasn't turned his home into a halfway house for illegals?
Isn't it self-evident that there are many ways to assist and care about illegals than to move them into your home?

I've always been more of a hand-up than a hand-out kind of guy. Allowing undocumented immigrants to become documented and work here legally allows them to hopefully live on their own, without any assistance. If after a long journey to get to the border, they need humanitarian aid in order to survive, that's a different story. We should render all aid to our fellow human beings to keep them alive if possible.

But long term? 8 million undocumented immigrants have already found work in our country. Many more will come and do the same. And presumably, many don't need any handouts in order to survive. But these people do live in fear that if caught by authorities, they will get deported. I say, remove that from the equation, allow them to live here legally and take some monies as visa payments. Isn't that better for everyone?

Or, we can spend money in a vail attempt to secure the border, and do raids and spend more money detaining and deporting those already here. And that only results in labor shortages, which subsequently leads to inflation. Like all the chicken plants that were raided. As a result, high chicken costs.

I fail to see my hypocrisy by not opening up my house to undocumented immigrants. If they need immediate, humanitarian aid, then maybe. If they are just looking for work, I'll help if I can and wish them luck in their endeavor.

My bad. I genuinely thought your post was from a virtuous man. It seemed like you genuinely wanted to help these destitute people, and I guess I assumed, as a virtuous man, you didn’t require the poor families from South America to walk 1000 miles through the brutal desert to come to your house for help. I apologize for my error. I want to help these people at their home, so they can keep their family, their property, their belonging, their heritage and most import avoid the risks of death, rape and disease on such a treacherous journey. My hopes were we could show Gator nation that politics have no role in virtue, and that we should show compassion for the less fortunate without turning them into illegal beings, as the OP suggests.

    I apologize I misjudged you.

what is “anti-choice”? Is that the opposite of “pro abortion”? If so, shouldn’t it be called “anti abortion” to be consistent?
