We can continue to make excuses for this program and its coaches until the end of time...

...but a rebuild can be had quickly.

It just takes the right hire.

Yeah, with the transfer portal and the removal of one year hiatus upon transferring, there are no excuses anymore. I'm not sure why so many were questioning Deion's approach to the situation at CU. He replaced 80% of personnel on a 1-10 team with better talent at almost all positions. Why would you not do that?

Napier can't really get away with that because most of the recruits he inherited were pretty highly regarded compared to what CU had on their roster. Either way, it can be turned around in one or two years. The question is what does Napier think? Does he see it as a 5 year project or ASAP? Some coaches like to build a foundation and work from there.

How many of these had a bare recruiting cupboard when they arrived? That would be helpful data.

There is a difference between early success and building a program to compete at a high level every year. Muschamp, McElwain, Mullen, and Meyer all had some good seasons within year 2, but none could sustain a high level past year 4. I’m ok with a slow burn while a program is built, but we’re hitting a point where we should see improvement throughout this season and definitely will know the direction by year 3.

Personally, I like the direction the defense is headed when compared to last year’s mess. Offense is still a work in progress though in truth, I’d much rather have Napier bring in an OC. My ideal OC is someone who can adapt to who he’s got now. But, I’d live with a OC with same general philosophy (Shanahan offense). I just think a HC and OC is asking too much of one person at a place like UF. I want one person whose undivided attention is offense with some recruiting mixed in rather than expect a HC to do both.

SS preached SUSTAINABILITY many times when discussing his choice to hire BN. We have had several coaches come in hot and then flounder.

Pump the breaks just a bit. Elko is probably an excellent coach and deserves major cred for last night's huge victory. Last year, though? They played next to nobody. I think schedule was ranked 73. They played Temple, Northwester, & Kansas out of conference. Didn't play FSU or Clemson. Not a single ranked team. Best team they played was NC.

Compare that with the schedule that the Gators have played.

I think you’ve figured it out. We should hire a hall of fame coach quick before the Tennessee game.

Quick, how many of these HOF coaches knew they'd become HOF coaches? NONE! At the time of their hire ALL were just another coach.

It was common thought that SOS could not be successful because his focus was to much on his golf game. Meyer's system was thought to not work in the SEC because of speed.

Stoops and Richt were coordinators. How many times has this (coordinator to HC) failed.
No one knew Saban would become the GOAT after MSU.

Perhaps you can explain how this supports your point about using these HOF coaches as examples of program changers. Hint: You're claiming hindsight to support a hindsighted argument. ;)

Most coaches that win natty's and have sustained success* are going to be HOF coaches. It's kinda hard to be super successful at a program like UF and not be in HOF consideration, the Mark Richt/James Franklin career arc is a hard line to walk right now, so there aren't many of them. It might be easier when the playoffs expand, seasons where you go 9-3/10-2 today don't win you any titles, but will become playoff appearances in the future and something to point to.

So the question is, are there super successful coaches, nationally or in the SEC, that didn't show meaningful improvement by year 2? That's the argument being made, if you've got "the guy" you usually see something by year 2. I'm sure there's examples of coaches not turning things around in the first two years but going on to success, but I think its less common.

*Gene Chizik, Larry Coker, and Ed O. are probably the only NC coaches this century not going to the HOF because their success wasn't sustained, like at all... Though I'll argue Coach O's "Geaux Tigas" sound clip is HOF worthy.

    See Brodeur's reply.

When these coaches were hired all of them were just another another risky hire.

We had solid talent at UF. We did have a top 5 NFL pick at QB. It wasn’t a championship roster but it wasn’t bad

LSU, FSU, USC, and Colorado had easily far worse rosters
