(1.) Mike White should stay because he has consistently taken Florida to the NCAA Tournament (4x out of 9 total since the 2008 season; see one of my previous posts), more than any other coach who had been hired around the same time, i.e Howland(1), Barnes(3), Martin(1) and even Pearl(2). Before 1987, Florida had exactly zero NCAA Tourney appearances! {When Florida has a streak (> 1 year) of not making the NCAAT is probably when you should make a decision. Right now, White had earned the right to try to keep this thing going! That is the logical thing to do.} (2) In the big picture, Florida has still been relevant in the 2010s as one of the leaders in NCAAT wins: - UF's 19 wins (White has 6 of the wins) are tied with Wisconsin and trails Syracuse(20), <-Boheim Michigan State(21), <-Izzo Michigan(22), North Carolina(24), <-R.Williams(retired) Gonzaga(25), <-Few Kansas(25), <-Self Duke(26), <-Krzyzewski Kentucky(31) <-Calapari Each additional win that UF could have had under White would have been the difference between either a SW16 or a Final4. Those NCAA wins are not easy to get much less qualifying every year for the tourney! March Madness: Teams with most NCAA Tournament wins since 2010 (3.) It is not easy to follow a basketball legend like Billy Donovan. Who was going to take the Florida job when Donovan left Florida? White has done an admirable job of maintaining Florida basketball while also not breaking NCAA rules &/or even breaking U.S. laws that the FBI is investigating - see Bill Wade (LSU). More NCAA coaches could be getting notices from the FBI. In recuiting, Florida has not been getting enough of the top players because some programs may be pushing the envelope and doing things in a shady way. Perhaps that was the reason Donovan left UF for the NBA because he was getting sick of the antics in recruiting. You are seeing many of these older coaches who are retiring or will retire soon because of the way you recruit is changing from before. We will see how it all shakes out in the end. Florida may have a Coach in White who could take advantage of the new changing landscape of college basketball.
You said close in five years, right? The 2017 & 2018 seasons have been the "closest" in winning the SEC title when UF finished 2nd in the SEC standings, so there you have it. When Florida had a great point guard (i.e, Chiozza/Hill, & Nembhard), Florida got "close" in 3/5 last seasons: 2017, 2018 & 2020. 2017: 2nd place (14-4); winner UK (16-2) 2018: 2nd best(11-7); Au/Tenn(13-5) 2019: 5th best (9-9); LSU (16-2) <-cheating Wade (FBI wants you!) 2020: 3rd best (11-7); UK(15-3) 2021: 5th (9-7); AL(16-2), <--- Covid resulted in cancelled SEC games! 2022: 4th best record (9-9); AU(15-3) However, lately, Florida has not done all that well in the SEC because of questionable point guard play and maybe not being physical enough when rebounding. Until White's overall recruiting picks up that may not change. He does have two highly rated interior players coming in but UF really needs a point guard.
Wade? NO! Crean? NO! Louisville head coaches including Pitino? Hell NO! I understand the frustration of not being an NC contender, but we once had a great coach that got us there cleanly. I would rather have a clean team that is not as good to having a dirty team that is better.
