This is a great post River, and I think it asks the real question. Forget guns for just a moment and ask yourself why these people are in a place where they feel shooting someone is the answer to their issues. Guns are not the only issue here.
I don't think its that complicated, they are teenagers. Young men being violent over women or some petty dispute is timeless and not particularly unique to America. What is unique is easily acquiring a gun to assert your will and reclaim your manhood.
There are many, many possible answsers to that question. Each one of them would be tremendously difficult to solve on their own. Fixing all of them would be a near impossibility. But there is something else that could be done to address gun violence.
Yeah, I mean if you want to abolish patriarchy and machismo I'm down, but that's a pretty complicated project, and it seems people lose their shit if a man wears a dress at Disney, so the guns might be the best bet.
Actually no The cops just came out and said they don’t think it is. And yes I absolutely made assumptions. I wonder why ANYONE would make that assumption? However my main point still stands. Vast vast majority of mass shootings, vast majority of gun deaths ( not counting suicides) are gang related. And let’s not act like there wasn’t a big push to paint the white male as the mass shooter du jour. I want better gun laws. But the left has jumped the shark. Ban all guns. Ban all weapons of war. Ban ar15. None of which will work. And the left knows it. As soon as guns get banned cartels will be smuggling them in to sell to gangs on the black market. Millions of law abiding responsible citizens own guns, CCW guns, use guns. It is the gang shootings, psychologically impaired, and those that have illegal guns that make up the majority of mass shootings.
OK, so it is best to not claim something is "clear gang related" when there's no evidence it is. I also doubt your claim about most homicides being gang related.
it's both, don't you think? First, you've got a guy who values neither his own life nor the lives of others. Obviously, something has gone very wrong in his short life. But that is what starts this. Second, it's his access to guns that caused seven people to get shot, two of them fatally. I assume some of the seven were not his targets. That wouldn't happen if he went after the other guy with a baseball bat.

D o we know if the gun was legally owned by the shooter and how he obtained it? I do not think there is a way to stop those that want a gun from getting one. Ban the guns and they will be smuggled in. We haven’t stopped the flow of drugs by banning drugs. We won’t stop the flow of guns. I still maintain that 1. This is cultural issue. No respect for human life. The idea that one needs to lash out with violence. Lack of human connections, too many pills for too many ills, and lack of red flags laws. (They work) 2. Mass shootings make up less than 4percent of gun deaths. The AR15 makes up even a smaller percentage of deaths. This has become a political issue and is being pushed at every chance. The problem is no one is really considering the real issues and offering real solutions. Ban guns is the easy catch phrase. As is weapons of war. You could ban every single gun tomorrow. Make it illegal to own or possess any firearm- and two things would happen. Crime spree of personal belongings. And bad guys will still have guns because they won’t care about the van. Gang violence will still occur. Domestic violence with a gun will still occur. Violent crime with guns will still occur. The only thing that will change is the thousands of times a person has legally defended themselves with a gun will plummet.
Yes, I agree. I just question what we can do about it. The shooter was 19, so how did he obtain the firearm. My guess... stolen, or bought stolen. No weapons ban, enhanced background checks, etc. would have stopped this. There are just too many guns in circulation I guess. Just a bad situation. So, since there is little we can do about the first two issues, why don't we take the third issue and hit it head on. Put this kid in prison and never let him out. Since it is quite obvious he can't control himself, lock him away so he can't harm anyone in the future. That we can do.
There's really no need to incarcerate someone that long. People age out of violence. And none of what you suggest deals with the problem, its simply addressing the fallout.
Exactly. It's shouldn't be difficult to understand if you give someone access to a tool that can be operated with the pull of a trigger particularly during an emotionally charged state or developmental period of life that things like this will happen.
