I must say I don’t know of anyone who’s essentially chosen religion to cope with the inevitability of death.

They send counselors into schools every time someone gets a skinned knee during recess. I'm sure they're quite data-rich on Gen Z.

I believe that Stat in terms of how those questioned, responded.

I don't accept the substantive conclusion however, bc we've elevated victimhood to the highest virtue, over merit, looks, personality, character, effort, work ethic....

Naturally, if v'hood is the high virtue, most questioned will grasp the first limb in reach, to stake their claim to victimhood, upon the slightest most subtle virtue signaling.

Perhaps we should be more curious about the 58% who seem to have missed the signaling.

    WE. MUST. DO. BETTER!!!

^^^btw, anecdotally, my wife, who's a virtual expert in the field of college aps, and totally plugged into the col ap circuit, recently shared this nugget with me:

Indian moms have caught on to this victimhood = highest virtue phenomenon, and taken to concocting fake hardships, to make the sale on their kids' aps

    Color. Me. Shocked.

But that's the @#$#@ up times we're living in.

Teach your kids well! Never let a good excuse go to waste, and any claim to victomhood > all that effort it takes to achieve merit.

It's time to revisit Maslow's hierarchy.

Indian as in Native Americans or Indian as in subcontinental Asians? Washing your clothes in the village toilet is compelling. Agonizing over the vanishing buffalo when you can hit the In-n-Out--not so much.

Personal statements that describe a student overcoming obstacles isn’t anything new, most savvy kids/parents have done it for years. Hell, my youngest wrote about how Shands saved her life as a newborn.

Plus, large state universities (and probably elite ones as well) don’t really check. :ninja2:

The 'new' element is in the flat out fabrication of "hardships", by a people who have mostly been quite apt at earning their way via merit.

Wait til they catch on to the latest scam...paying whore docs and whore profs for BS letters claiming the *clients'* spoilt kiddies did research, helped em get published, and/or interned with them, and "...oh what a prodigy lil' johnny/jill is!"

TBL: higher ed.... is. A. Racquet.

    Cest la vie.

Again, the hardship statements are old news. There’s quite the cottage industry of professional “personal statement” writers. I don’t know why they ask for them unless there is also an in-person interview.

Newsflash, people lie to get ahead.

Did you tell your kids to make shit up on their college aps?

    Did you make shit up?

Just bc it's commonly practiced doesn’t make it any less dishonest.

I don't know you personally, but if I had to bet I'd say you didn't do either of those, and I'd bet that you'd own it to be flat out cheating, in the real world.

Feel free to correct me, if I've given you too much credit here.

I don’t understand the sad part. Didn’t they all get participation trophies and time outs instead of spankings growing up? ;)

I listen to music, go to the gym, ride my bicycle, work on projects. I know enough people who are suffering physically and others who are struggling financially. When I get down I think about them and that helps me realize how blessed I am to be where I am today. I’ve had a few fights with depression and recently lost my daughter who was only 45 years old. I have a wonderful wife, family, and friends. That helps a lot. Having someone you can turn to and talk with is a comfort many don’t have. I feel bad for those that don’t have what I have.

    To quote Abraham Lincoln,

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.
