Honorary Gator Katie Ledecky wins the trifecta with the 200M relay, adding a Silver to her Gold & Bronze. With 13 medals she becomes the most decorated woman in Olympic history.
To me, this is one of the coolest things about the Olympics. While Ledecky is an American, this sharing of training and coaching is uniquely American. Olympians choose coaches and training without university ties. Most of the Gator Olympians aren't competing for the US. They came from other countries to attend UF, and to train here. This pattern is repeated across the nation. We (the U.S.) train most of the Olympians in certain sports. They come to the US, to get a degree, and to train. If they are good enough, they compete against us in the Olympics. This may seem irksome during the Olympics, but I think it is really cool, because you don't hear any former American trained Olympians denouncing the US. These really strong people, if they go back to their countries to live and lead their countries, remember us as real friends. That's a win in my book.
Gator Canyon Barry beats the pants off of France in 3X3 play. He scores 15 out of the teams' 21 total points. First win for USA!!!!
Nothing finer than Barry beating China. Another 14 points he scores out of 21. His 3X3 team is on a roll now.
Honorary Gator Katie Ledecky holds off Aussie Titmus and wins the 800M in record fashion. She wins her fourth consecutive Olympic gold in the same event, a feat no female swimmer has ever accomplished. Ledecky’s reign of dominance is so unprecedented that she was both the youngest woman (she was 15 at London in 2012) and the oldest woman (24 at Tokyo 2020) to win Olympic gold in the event.
The ACC is trying to claim Ledecky as one of thier own. She went to Stanford long before they joined the ACC. Social media is tearing the ACC a new one.
Noah Lyles wins gold in the 100m sprint. Guess he's an honorary Gator. He was born in Gainesville and committed to UF, but Adidas signed him and his little brother to go pro instead.
FINKE only USA male swimmer to win Individal gold. Made our Florida swimming coach cry. Only Gators come out of the water alive!
That never gets old... seen it 10 time already. Thanks for posting it, ET. What's even better about Bobby Finke's win is that he saved that 120 year winning streak in the Olympics. The men have won an individual gold metal in swimming in every Olympics for 120 years and counting.
Our men's swim team really struggled this Olympics. Dressel is past his prime, and there doesn't seem to be a solid crop of younglings ready to take over. Finke is most likely done as well. The women's team is in better shape, but Ledecky is probably done as well as Huske. American Universities have essentially trained our competition. It's crazy how many kids from other countries go to college here, then compete against us. And it's not just universities; the superb Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh is in high school, and trains in Sarasota. We will never be as dominate as we were because of this. Australia has done a really good job of keeping their young athletes home, particularly in swimming. They have always had a great swimming program, and are now serious competitors in track and field as well. While I don't really have a problem with this, there is one dude that galls me: the pole vaulter Duplantis. His dad is American, mom Swedish, but he was born in America, grew up in America, went to college in America, but competes for Sweden. Screw him.
I like what you said above... I also thought Dressel had one more good Olympics left in him before this one in Paris. I also misread an article that I skimmed though a while back. I meant to say that the Americans have never been shutout of at least one individual gold metal event in over 120 years. Not related just to swimming. One more thing... just like Mike "Mouse" Holloway is great at recruiting and training the best track athletes, not just in college, but in the world as proven out in the Olympics... Same goes for Anthony Nesty as the Gators' swimming coach. Two of the best world-class coaches in two separate Olympic events. And they're both GATORS! UNREAL! No other College or University has that... None that I can name off the top of my head. The The Gators are fortunate to have those two coaching at The University of Florida.
