8 days after this picture was taken. Steve Spurrier was announced as the new Florida Gator coach.

There was another snowstorm in Gainesville, that preceded that by about ten years or so.

You took the pic from the stands? Who was the person posing?
I remember hearing about the snow storm, but I was down south either home for Xmas or working at Disney as a holiday musician. This was 1989?

Yes 1989. That’s my friend Dave on top of the big “F”.

I grew up in Gainesville. It snowed a few times: 1973, 1977, 1980. The difference is that only in 1989 did the snow accumulate on the ground. The only other time that happened in Gainesville was in the late 1800s.

That was my freshman year. Florida was supposed to have a basketball game that got cancelled. I was bummed - was about the only fun thing happening that Christmas break

Thanks for posting. I remember the day well because the next day I asked my wife to marry me up in St Augustine and many bridges were closed that morning trying to get there from Ocala. We are still married 33 years later.:)

We live in Gainesville, but had gone to Belgium for the holidays. No Internet news in those days, so all we knew was 2-day old International Herald Tribune. Northern Europe turned out to be warmer than Florida at that time.
So we flew into Orlando airport in the evening January 3 and went straight to a hotel to sleep. Next day we drove home on the Turnpike—for many miles all of the orange orchards were brown and dead, and never recovered

Every tree branch in town snapped and took half the power with it.

I had just moved to Gville from S Fl 2 months earlier. I missed it because I happened to take a family trip to Steamboat Springs, CO where it was much warmer that day than G’ville.
