And on its way to a Republican filibuster in the Senate. Why serve a country that doesn't want you?

"Deported veterans would have an easier path to returning to the United States, and non-citizen service members would have earlier opportunities to apply for naturalization under a bill passed Tuesday by the House.

The bill, called the Veteran Service Recognition Act, would also add more hurdles to deporting non-citizen veterans. It cleared the House in a largely party-line 220-208 vote"

There’s a fundamental absence of decent human beings in the GOP party. I’m sure there are a few decent GOP voters left but if your default vote is for the GOP you have a deficient of decency and character.

Ignoring the partisan garbage, I could get behind a solution for immigrants that requires a minimum level of military service as a path to citizenship.

Any chance of 10 Republicans in the Senate helping to break the filibuster? Maybe the Dems could sweeten the pot by adding something else, like an amendment banning litterboxes from schools?

Are you saying that an immigrant would have to serve in the military to become a U.S. citizen? That’s how I am reading your post, but it seems strange.

DREAMers act that Obama wanted would give citizenship to undocumented immigrants who came into this country under 16, graduated high school, and either served 4 years minimum honorably in the military, or graduate from an accredited college or tech school. Makes sense to me.

If someone has served, their immigration process should be easier. But asking all potential immigrants to serve makes no sense and is counterproductive. The skilled and immigrants with advanced degreees are not going to immigrate then. I wouldn’t have if serving was a requirement.

How does that make government bigger? It's a reasonable solution to a complex problem and the government already has purview over immigration. It's not expanding anything.

I hear what you're saying here, but right now there's really been no solution. This is one of the first reasonable compromises I've seen in some time with regard to immigration policy. Is it perfect, of course not. But it's better than the complete chaos going on now.

I think it's a good option for folks with relatively low skill sets and no other reasonable means for citizenship. I don't like requiring it for everyone.

Thay being said, we can't even get the GOP on board with helping out those currently serving. Assholes.

I honestly had no idea we were deporting immigrant veterans. That is about the stupidest thing I’ve heard. We really deport people who were eligible to serve, and served, and then boot them?

SMDH. The lengths some will go to bolster their anti immigration stance.

This has nothing to do with “solving” border security, it’s more or less just dealing with existing veterans and active duty. We should not be deporting veterans who served. 100% of republicans in the House apparently disagree. If you think they have a good reason, they don’t. It’s basically just protesting Biden’s overall border policy and pandering to the “no amnesty” far right who now dominate the party. The usual suspects (Cruz, Cotton) will likely lead the filibuster.

I’m not sure it’s even a good idea to entice foreigners to come with the prospect of military service in exchange for citizenship. Aside from the fact the far right would probably be against it for deranged “great replacement theory” concerns (look at Ricks post for prime example), I’d have a different concern, it doesn’t strike me as optimal for military readiness to be intentionally flooding the military with foreign fighters who are essentially right off the proverbial boat. I’m guessing the vast majority of “illegals” in the current military actually grew up here and are already in our culture, they are for all intents and purposes already Americans.

This law is aimed more at Dreamers (people brought here as children) and those who have been here a long time AND served. Dreamers should be given a reprieve whether or not they served in the military, provided they meet the ongoing requirements. But if one served its unconscionable to even think of deporting them (barring some violent criminal record). Dreamers who are serving or served should be given top priority if not a 100% guarantee of citizenship.

So would you say that someone who would raise chickens in his back yard and sell chickens and eggs for a living shouldn’t be allowed to emigrate to the U.S.?

Bling, I think we're already half in agreement here but I'm not being clear somehow. I do agree with you 100% that if someone has served they should not be a candidate for deportment. I believe there should be a process in place for those who have served to get bumped up to the front of the line for citizenship. I honestly couldn't give two craps over r vs d on the issue, just the issue itself. Maybe it's as simple as offering a choice to those who are here illegally already and have not served instead of blindly deporting people.
