It's may not be as goofy as it sounds. Especially if you've seen clips of scUM's secondary play in their spring game.
Ward's spring game stats pretty much tell the tale. The long and short of it is that Cam ward has either progressed from being a somewhat above average passer (maybe?) to a pigskin flinging superman. I'm too lazy to dig up Ward's spring game stats, but I do recall they were absolutely eye popping - while his career stat sheet was a good deal less so. I also have heard concerns on the subject from UM fan sites as a result. If Mertz gets a little more time in the pocket, I really like our chances against these guys. Addendum: Ward was 19 of 24 (79.1%) for 324 yards and three TDs and no picks. His previous career stat line was rather good but certainly not great. In fact, CW has never approached that level of efficiency, on a regular basis anyway, before going up against that putrid UM secondary.
Sometimes coaches do things in spring games to make certain situations, players, scheme look better than they actually are. I don’t take much from Spring games.
Some of their slightly less idiotic fans are openly expressing concerns about poor secondary play - as are some media types who have expounded on those deficiencies since last season. It's not just the spring game apparently.
