Most impressive teams this weekend to me were Duke, Houston, Ole Miss & Arkansas. Gators are as talented and deeper than any team in this tournament. They just have to play like they did in the SEC tournament and they can/will beat anybody in their path.
My general impressions from wise observers here that our Gators have not, as of yet, played at the level we showed at the SEC tourney. I think that’s true and hope we didn’t peak too soon. Each weekend stands alone, thinking back to previous NCAATs so an opportunity to reset and attain that level of skill and intensity is approaching fast!
Current live odds for championship Team Champ Finalist (1) Duke Blue Devils +250 +150 (1) Florida Gators +325 +180 (1) Houston Cougars +500 +225 (1) Auburn Tigers +550 +210 Pretty amazing they are almost exactly what they were going in.
When I was watching UConn vs Oklahoma, "scouting" our second-round opponent, I was amazed to hear Bill Raftery, still using the schtick that was old in the 1990s: lingerie, onions, the kisss-ah, send it in big fella, etc. These got old by the 1990s. I hate schtick, can't we just call the games. Groan!
How is it that Duke players can hack a players forearm on an inbound play and not get a whistle. Even one of the announcers was joking about home cooking. Guess there's a reason they are so good on defense.
There's a long history with that team getting home cooking. Their former coach had even more clever ideas to gain a competitive advantage . . . like growing their fingernails. I remember in 1986 when Louisville beat them for the championship (Jay Bilas is still chippy -- LOL!) after the game several of the Louisville players looked like they had been locked in a room with rabid feral cats.
The first 10 minutes of the Norfolk game they did play like the SEC tourney and then they got complacent and kind of been searching for that mojo since. Some short flashes of it in the UConn game but not much.
Uconn was effective on defense and rebounding. Frustrating our guys. Thus the too tight free throw shooting. We ended up looking like champions though.
we didn't peak too eary, we've been reading too many headlines and not playing with the same intensity of defense
Not at all. Apples to oranges. The AD was literally on the selection committee. ESPN shows zero NCAA tournament games and is competing head to head with CBS during the tournament.
The Queen kid who traveled is an absolute monster. He has incredibly soft hands and can really move. Seen too many games where a kid like that dominates. We need to run Maryland into submission and cut down the turnovers. Pretty sure that is the formula to beating them.
Wear them down. They get 8-10 minutes from their bench, which means the starters pretty much go the distance.
We have the lowest seeds in a potential Elite 8, compared to other #1s. Ours is 3v10. Others: 2v6, 2v6, 2v3.
