Tony V. is the spear counterpart to Kim Mulkey. Capable coaches who've earned their nattys, but if they got run over by a bus tomorrow, I'd be singing the most famous musical selection from the Wizard of Oz.

 

I hope you wrote this tongue-in-cheek.

 

Funny, just had my vol neighbor compare Mulkey's persona to MTG. Thought he was spot on.

 

I find it interesting that winning coaches no matter what the school is seems to be hated by other schools. SOS was hated. Donovan was hated when winning. Seems we try to find fault with any coach that is on top. The fans love their winning coach and will defend, the teams that get beat by these coaches find reasons for hate.
Maybe it's just me but usually looks like sour grapes.

 

I work in Johnson City, so naturally I’m surrounded by vol fans but I told a few of them that it’s about time they won a national championship in something because it’s been fifteen years since they’ve won one in any sport.

 

I detest Tennessee like I do FSU. I guess they got to win something every few years or so. I’m not as bothered they won it because I think A and M was smug and disrespectful. Both have great pitching but UT’s pitching is dominant. I hope our pitching in the next few years can get back to where we were when we won the NC.
Nobody would have ever predicted we finish 3rd this year!! It was an unbelievable finish for us!

Sorry - High Definition era. I notice all of the highlights of the Vols that they show on broadcast hype videos are grainy because they were shot with old cameras. Basically, my shorthand for "within the last 20 years", kind of like "leather helmet" accomplishments are like my Dad's West Point classmate Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard.

 

I disagree and I also don't recall Billy Donovan being hated. There are countless other examples as well, I'm sure. I'd say there's a large range of "hate" based on the coach's demeanor, words and actions on top of just winning. SOS was probably hated more than Saban, who was tremendously more successful for a longer period of time, because he loved to zing opponents and their fan bases.

 

Coach Vitello a heck of a coach. Heard some of Gainesville’s radio personalities giving him some real due credit. The guy is just good and you can bet UT will be very good again next year. He and Sully are two of the very best for sure.

 

Ask me in about 10 years if he performs at the same level as Sully. Certainly worthy of praise for turning around a bottom-feeder, Sully didn't have to do that.

 

I live here and I see Vitello as he operates 365 days a year. He may be disliked by many for his manner, but he should be respected for what he gets paid to do. He reminds me a lot of our Bull Gator, Steve Spurrier. You other guys can hate him all you want but he gets paid to build teams and those teams tend to win a lot. When he's "your guy" you love him, even if you occasionally wish he had acted differently. But at the end of the day, he is "your guy", and Vitello is that to UT.

 

Tread lightly. I posted my opinion two years ago that he reminded me of SOS and got nothing but angry responses.
