All is quiet now into the 6th round. If I recall last year many thought the 7th round was the pivot point in the draft. It appears some of our possible signees got the word out they want to go to college.

 

How do you guys feel about Ech? Million dollar slot, he’s gone right? Assuming the A’s don’t try to massively shortchange him..

 

Abner just went in the 6th....

 

Dang it. Was hoping he could have a breakout season in '24.

 

Phillip Abner just got taken in the 6th round, pick #175, by the Diamondbacks - slot value $328,300.

 

Going that early out of HS is a massive pull to move past college. If he is not signed by 7/31 the chances of college start sliding up. If he gets anything higher than value he is gone.

 

If Echivarria is the only one of our signing class that we lose today, I think O'Sullivan and all Gator baseball fans will be ecstatic .

 

So what's everyone's thinking on Abner.....
Mine is its a low number but I think he is gone. Why, we have 3 really good left hand pitchers looking to come in next year. Plus Abner sees we don't have room for him as a starter. This might be an agreed on both sides for him to move on if he gets the right spot somewhere else. Now the choice will be does he take the money or try the portal for a starting spot in another school in North Carolina where he is from.

 

Coming out of high school, he was considered a big get for Florida. #11 rated LHP in the country, #67 player overall. Just hasn't worked out as well as he would have liked, I imagine. Not sure what his personal situation is, but I'll be surprised if he's back at Florida for the fall. Don't know whether he'll go pro or transfer, but wish him the best whatever he decides.

 

This would be a HUGE win for us if we lose only one signee AND keep Austin from UCLA.

 

I hope Abner stays. He has the stuff, just needs to hone his talent like Sproat still needed to do after his first two years.

 

Great point. I'd forgotten about Austin possibly getting drafted. We're halfway through the 7th round and he hasn't been taken yet.

 

And that folks is a wrap for round number 7. I'm not saying everyone else is a lock to stay but its looking very good for the Gators near future. I believe we have some really good arms coming in. Our position players are a wait and see but hopefully 1 or 2 freshmen surprises come our way. We seem to be keeping a good pitching core to work with and a good number of freshmen arms to build with. Lineup wise we need another good bat or two that will make opposing pitchers work hard to get thru the lineup.

 

We are in the speed rounds now. Through 7

 

Through Round 7 and all is quiet on the Gator front. Slot values are now down in the $220,000 range.

I'm thinking Colby Halter, and maybe some of these freshmen, must have gotten the word out that they're playing at Florida next season.
