I am convinced if he got a Super and then 1-2 Omaha starts, his draft position would have been very different. I will say, he didn’t miss as many bats as he should for a high pick. His BAA and other metrics are outstanding but K/9IP wasn’t top notch.
Parada has signed. Supposedly for $5.02M per MLB.com. That means the Mets have used $13,651.83K of their $13,963.40K. Only $311.57K remains. That said, if they want to go over up to 5% (which just incurs a luxury tax), then they have up to $1,009.74K left to spend on Sproat. I would guess something close to $1M happens and he is gone.
Unless I am mistaken (and if someone understands MLB rules better than me, let me know the error), if the Mets don’t sign Sproat, his $691K comes out of their bonus pool meaning their $311K left is actually $380K over. Which would then be subjected to a 75% tax I think since they would be over their pool or $285K to NOT sign Sproat. If they sign Sproat above $311K, each of those dollars is also taxed at 75%. So his “slot” is really close to $1M now and each additional $100K to Brandon costs them $175K. Fun!!
Indians announced their signings it appears. DeLauter, Campbell, and also Ellerts all signed. Ellerts supposedly for $125K.
Next highest unsigned players are: #129 Chase Meidroth (San Diego) #304 Brock Rodden (Wichita St) So 4 total unsigned players out of the Top 10 rounds. Still 43+ hours to go.
I read about Parada signing over slot but thanks for the analysis on remaining pool money and permutations of Mets going over. Rumor has it- Mets put $900k on table. I sense if they offer $1million- Sproat will sign at the 11th hour- if not he will be very welcomed back on campus. We shall see- very soon.
BTW- Mets owner Stephen Cohen's estimated net worth is $15 billion. So a few dollars here and there matters not.
Meidroth has now signed. Only 3 of the top 10 rounds haven’t signed: #81 Nolan McLean (Okie St) #90 Brandon Sproat #304 Brock Rodden (Wichita St) 3 of 316 unsigned. If Sproat doesn’t sign, UF would have 2 of potentially 6 total non-signees out of 630ish drafted the last two years…
5PM tomorrow apparently. I knew it was August 1st but per an article posted by @Matherly87, tomorrow at 5.
As I understand it, if a team exceeds their bonus cap- the first penalty is a "luxury tax"-- 75 percent up to 5% above their cap. From 5-10% above cap it jumps to 100% luxury tax plus the loss of 2023 first rounder- a very bad deal. The Mets cap this year is $13,963,000 and they have some $236,400 remaining to hit it. So if the Mets really want Sproat they can offer some $934,000 and pay the 75% luxury tax on $698k. Don't think they will stretch beyond that.
No change in the last 3 unsigned as of this morning. #81 Nolan McLean #90 Brandon Sproat #304 Brock Rodden
I'd be very surprised if Sproat signs. The Mets have gone well over slot for several players - including throwing a chunk of cash at Tidwell. He signed for $1.85m-- almost $400k over slot. Morabito was also signed well over slot- Mets must have realized that Sproat would not take their offer and could up their offers to others. Could be wrong though.
Definitely possible. It will cost them money to NOT sign him though. I have seen various numbers for their pool money remaining but using $300, that means they are actually “over” by $391K if they don’t sign Sproat since his money comes out of their pool. A 75% tax on that since they are over would be $293K. They will have to write a $293K check and get absolutely nothing. Of course if Sproat wants $1M or more, then they will have to pay $1M and then a 75% tax on about $700K as that would be the new over. So a $1M signing is actually a $1.525M signing. $300K for nothing or $1.5M (assuming Sproat will take $1M) for Sproat. Rock and hard place…
Coming up on 3PM and still nothing for Sproat on the draft tracker. It must be 5 o'clock somewhere. MLB Draft Tracker
Just a quick note, the draft tracker is pretty good BUT I have seen a couple prospects which didn’t have a signing bonus by their name but when you click on the player, there is a new headline saying they signed. One such example is Brandon Noriega in the 11th round who supposedly signed two days ago based on the news lines. Regardless, nothing on a Google search either so seems good so far on Sproat. I assume you are on the walk now killing time before dinner prep???
