He did go to the occasional charity gala (where he would run into people like that), but everybody laughed at him behind his back. Even back in the 1990s and 2000s. I remember reading a story about how he conned his way onto stage at a charity gala a while back without paying anything to the charity. There is a reason that Howard Stern used to bring him onto his show all the time to be a clown.
