They took the books out of elementary schools and moved them to a middle school. At least the group of books by the one author from the article I posted. That is not banning books. That is being responsible.

Personally I trust teachers and librarians to determine which books are age appropriate. When I was in 5th grade I read a biography of Jackie Robinson. As I noted in another thread several weeks ago two biographies of Jackie Robinson as well as a biographies of Hank Aaron and Roberto Clemente were on a list of books potentially eligible for banning probably because a few anti-CRT snowflakes were offended by references to the racism experienced by the ballplayers. By the way aren't the rights of parents who want their children exposed to a broad range of books being abridged by the theocratic snowflakes who want to restrict books that they consider offensive?

That isn’t banning books, but that’s not what I’m talking about. The state passed laws that the governor signed saying books that might contain what some might consider pornographic, reference to discrimination against POC, CRT, or sexual identity must be removed from school libraries. During training they were told to err on the side of caution because to make a mistake would be a felony under state law. It’s like a mob boss telling an unwilling underling to “take care of a problem” for them and they would be very disappointed if they didn’t. It’s a weaselly way to do it but anyone with one third the mental capacity of navel lint knows what they meant.

The same political party that doesn't trust teachers to address racism in US history wants the same teachers educating students with Glocks on their hips.

Talk to the company and family that own the rights to the books. All changes were done by them. Unless of course you want to start telling companies what they can or can’t do with their products.

And I believe that there is a special place in hell for those who want to force 10-year old rape victims to give birth or those who are willing to jeopardize the lives of women based on an extremist so called prolife position.

Yes. The same Roberto Clemente book that his son said he understood why it was removed from “elementary” schools in Duval county. They were not banned from all schools.

Are those the same teachers who are caught with underage students?

Sorry that’s a pot shot but books with teen material shouldn’t be in an elementary school. I also doubt the librarians have actually read every book that’s in their library so they may not know al what is in them.

I have seen no evidence that any book has been banned because of the new law that would not be supported by the vast majority of people. These are headlines to create a narrative that is not there.

Hence the OP being disingenuous. As books are not being banned. Now are there some books that are considered not age appropriate for high school that are being removed? Probably. And they should be left for the public library most likely. But most of this is nothing more than common sense.

So books really aren’t being banned, just taken out of some school libraries.

Glad I learned that, the way the thread leads is that there was a bonfire in the town square and they were torching books ala Fahrenheit 451

Sorry that doesn’t fit the narrative that DeSantis is a bigger wannabe facist than Trump.
That’s the playbook to go after him.

Funny it’s from the party that thought people should be fired, fined, not cared for or even jailed if they refused a Covid vaccine.

If you care to educate yourself you will find that Libertarians believe that the government shouldn’t be in the business of doing many things that the USG does. You might want to take a look at all of pet lib causes (and some conservative pets too) that would lose a lot of government subsidies with libertarian

I never claimed to be a libertarian. Truly doctrinaire libertarians believe that the government shouldn't be in the business of providing old age pensions and that social security should be ditched. The same for most assistance and income support programs.

Ignoring whatever is the significant difference between banning a book and removing it from a library, if only inappropriate books are being removed, the key issue is clearly how do we decide what is “appropriate”. You seem to just take it as received wisdom that these books are objectively inappropriate, but obviously not everyone agrees on this point, or those books wouldn’t have been there in the first place.

Name me one book that is not available in a public (not a school) library in Florida due to a book ban.

Saying books are being banned in Florida is akin to saying alcohol is banned because it’s not available in schools. And that would actually be a more accurate statement because children aren’t allowed to drink alcohol at all. If a child wants pretty much any book that isn’t pornographic, all they need to do is go to a public library as opposed to their school library.

Calling that a “ban” is a complete misrepresentation of what is happening.

Librarians and Teachers decide what is age appropriate: “Being responsible.”

Parents deciding what is age appropriate: “LITERALLY HITLER!!!”
