Anyone following this story? She was shot in her own back yard by police, survived, then was arrested for attempted murder of a cop.

Video was released today, and looks like total confusion. There was a police hunt and a wanted person believed to be her neighborhood, helicopters circling, she heard something and went in her back yard holding a gun. Police saw her and pointed their guns at her over a fence and started yelling at her “police, drop your gun”. She pointed her gun in their direction and they shot her. It seems clear from the way she reacted and the 911 call she made after being shot that she didn’t hear them identify themselves as police and thought the wanted person had shot her.

Good thing no one was killed, Not sure attempted murder charges of police officers are justified.

It feels like they charged her to keep the criticism of shooting her subdued.

One of the things you are taught in SERE school is that when the rescue force shows up to recover you, you hit the deck and put your arms out wide to show you are not a threat. You are specifically instructed not to try and help them subdue the people holding you since they do not have any clue who is actually who when the show up on the scene and there is a ton of confusion.

This seems to be an example of why that is taught. The police did not know who was who and saw someone with a gun that was not following their instructions. The charges do seem to be a bit much, especially after getting shot.

It’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. How is it “attempted murder” if the woman didn’t fire a shot and was basically minding her own business on her own property?

At worst it’s just a miscommunication in gun crazed America. Really only the police acted criminally here (yet again). All the cops that shot her should be fired and charged. I wouldn’t go to “attempted murder” for the cops because it was a confusing situation, but something more along the lines of reckless endangerment. Those clowns just don’t need to be cops. That they try to intimidate the victim with “attempted murder” is pretty much corruption. So instead of just a few dumbass cops that needed to be fired, now you have a corruption scandal that ropes in more. Brilliant!

I get that but it goes both ways. Cops may have confused her for a bad guy, so they pointed their guns at her ... she apparently confused cops for bad guys pointing their guns at her. If was legit confusion, I don't think charges against her are warranted. Not saying the cops necessarily did anything wrong here, either, but she had a right to go her back yard with her gun if thought there was some threat to her or her family ... cops need to find a way to recognize that citizens are repeatedly told "have a gun for your own protection" by people pushing gun sales, so they need better training on how not to go full-rambo every time they see someone holding a gun.

^ This. I read about it a while ago, and this was my takeaway.

Just another example of how having proliferate guns in the hands of untrained people really really makes us safer. More evidence both that we don't need increased gun training, and that untrained civilians "fighting crime" is super helpful.

Also; there's just no way to prevent this type of thing in America. No way at all. Granted, it almost never happens in other countries, but there's absolutely no way at all to reduce gun violence here. Anything we did attempt would be astoundingly onerous to gun owners, or would be imperfect ...... so we should just do nothing.

    Right, gun lobby?
