According to CNN pollster Harry Enten, Trump's net approval rating among independents has gone from negative 16 percent in 2017 to negative 22 percent in 2025, meaning the president has "broken his own record." Independent voters were a key pillar of Trump's coalition in the 2024 election, with 46 percent backing him—up from 41 percent in 2020, when a majority (54 percent) voted Democrat. Keep in mind that Trump's approval is dropping like a rock and the adverse impact of his tariffs has yet to take effect. Interestingly a number of his hardcore supporters have indicated that they are willing tolerate hardship if it will further Trump's ultimate goal of bringing manufacturing back to the US. My guess is that after three or four months of rising prices and a slowing economy they will have second thoughts. While Biden's approval rating went underwater after the disastrous US withdrawal from Afghanistan it really didn't tank until we started experiencing inflation for a roughly seven-month period and even after the inflation rate moderated it never recovered. The economic consequences of Trump's ill conceived tariffs will be far worse and will last much longer.
W had 25% approval on the way out the door. That was historically low, but also rather revealing that anyone at all could have “APPROVED” that shitshow. 25% of people were like Iraq Boondoggle? Weirdly, I think W's failures are what brought us Trump. W was the purest distillation of Reagan Republicanism. Lower taxes on the highest income folks (without spending cuts) and industry-driven deregulation and regulation for the "economic conservatives," anti-gay bigotry from a policy standpoint and judges for the "social conservatives," massive defense spending and wars of choice for the "foreign policy conservatives," which covers the three acknowledged legs of the stool. The fourth, unacknowledged leg of the stool, let's call them "racial conservatives," got dog whistles and were otherwise largely ignored. They are the winners of Trumpism. The problem for W Republicans, unlike Reagan: the policies all failed spectacularly. The deficit exploded (a bit like Reagan but worse) and the tax cuts didn't pay for themselves. The industry-driven deregulation caused the housing collapse. The Iraq War was a monumental failure. Gay people became accepted at a rate that truly stunned the Republicans. Heck, the only successful policy was to appoint anti-legal abortion judges and now the Republicans have almost disavowed that policy because even the other Republican groups were pretty iffy about it. This led to the all grievance version of the Republican Party that we see today. The only unifying position is that somebody is trying to screw you over (immigrants, college professors and/or subject-area experts, big business, trans people, every country in the world, including Canada, etc.). Essentially, because the more cleaned up governing version of the Republican party failed miserably, we get the all emotion version.

W was just smart "Trumpism" ... (There was even a smaller cult of personality, and I still remember the W-The President stickers) I think the one thing that truly surprised them was the immigration backlash, not that they were sympathetic to immigrants, they were more concerned with majoritarian politics, it was a long-term play sort of like the Medicare expansion. The financial crisis more or less put them on the path to austerity and anti-immigration maximalism. John Yoo is probably like "I had to write a very long and detailed memo to justify kidnapping people and sending them to black site torture facilities outside the bounds of Habeas Corpus ... and now you can just do it."
Trump's approval down about only 3-5%, and this probably because he tanked the stock market about 15%. Never mind his crimes and obvious failing at everything he promised, while succeeding in only implementing the P2025 agenda. America doesn't care - we've clearly totally abandoned every shred of our moral compass. Shithole country.
