Tomatoes might be joining eggs as yet another commodity Trump is raising prices on.

Tomatoes Become One of the First Everyday Casualties of Trade War - WSJ

Starting in July, new fees will hit fresh tomatoes imported from Mexico after the Commerce Department decided this week to end an agreement that has largely been in place for the past three decades.

Agricultural economists said the Trump administration’s move is likely to increase prices for consumers, since roughly 70% of tomatoes sold in the U.S. are currently brought in from Mexico. Officials in Mexico said this week they hope to renegotiate the agreement before it goes into effect.

The tomato agreement, established in 1996, was meant to resolve a dispute over whether Mexico is selling tomatoes at artificially low prices into the U.S. market. It set a minimum price for imported Mexican fresh tomatoes and established quality inspections. But it can often still be cheaper to grow tomatoes in Mexico year-round because of its climate and lower costs.

I was at BJ's a few days ago. Unless my store is different than yours the only way to get them at that price was to purchase a large quantity (a tray of 36 eggs if I recall).

These federalized (through free federal money grants/bailouts) have always looked for a way to blame their price increases on external forces. They never miss a beat.

Similar to citrus groves, a lot of former tomato-land now has homes/condos on them. So them becoming ag producing again is not going to be an option. Even if, in the unlikely event new tomato farms started producing or some farmers shift from something else into tomatoes where the climate is right, that doesn’t happen overnight. Because of all this, I would expect tariffs on a product like tomatoes to flow pretty directly into prices.

Good NEWS! Trump has prices falling!

Soybean prices falling to about $10 a bushel.. that is not breakeven for farmers

Shipping container rates falling - Spot rates nearly under $2K!

Refridgerated spot rates are falling fast, down 10% this year from January.

Everywhere you look businesses are slowing down. That will crash prices. Winning!
