I think he has been given a very good offer....but not stupid money. And uf also has to consider the rest of the roster. There just isn't enough $$ to pay one guy too much

I actually saw a great post on another side from a guy extremely close to the program. You're Todd Golden and you've got $8.5M.....how do you allocate it? Most people ended up saying retire or go to NBA lol

The biggest loss may be him and Lee not working against each other this summer. They'd make each other better and Lee needs SEC level competition in practice and pick up games asap. They could've been quite a duo.

They will add some parts, so whoever is brought in should get that same exposure

I think this is it exactly. We love Aberdeen, some of it is based on merit, and some on nostalgia because of the national championship. Golden doesn’t have the luxury of basing decisions on nostalgia. He has to decide what Aberdeen means to this team in $. He can’t afford to overpay because he/we like him. He has to put together the best team. If another team is willing to pay more than he is worth to us, then he has a decision to make. Business decision on both ends. Just the reality of it now.

I wish we could hire Martin to lead summer workouts.

I think Aberdeen has more overall value to other teams than to UF. He has a National Championship on his resume. Not a lot of those around that are still in school and on the market. Just like Golden brought in Martin partly because he has been to a Final Four and knew what it took to get there, Aberdeen gets to sell that he has won an SEC Tournament Championship and a National Championship. For us, we have a bunch of guys back that know what it takes to win an NC, so don't really need to pay a premium for that. For other schools, though, that might have a lot of value. For me, the premium was just in the continuity he would have brought, but we have quite a bit of that in the front court at least, and maybe Brown will be just as good as Zel was anyway.

    This is true.

But … and I may be proven wrong… I think Aberdeen is a better player than Lee. And so my greater priority would have been keeping Zel. But that’s why I am not coach.

I don’t think the staff ever viewed Aberdeen as a one. Great secondary ball handler, careful with the ball, able to get his own shot, always pretty good being physical again those hard hedges and doubles off ball screens, but definitely not a distributor or a terribly efficient, high usage shot creator. Willing to bet that, wherever he lands, it will be as a two who can slide over.

Yeah, but if he thinks his avenue to the NBA is to be point guard 1.000 of a quality team and he would be less at UF next year, he may think it better to audition on another team, albeit not a better team. It is what it is.

Personally, if a player is good enough, they will pay attention and give you a chance (although not a guaranteed contract) and so, this may be a case of penny wise, pound foolish. We shall see.

I believe there was a place for Aberdeen, primarily due to his defense. I saw him as a starter at the 3, with the ability to put minutes at the 1 and 2 as needed. The back court needed a guy that had been there and done that......this to me is a big time loss in as far as what I know now about next year's team. Someone else had coined the pharse "In Golden we trust", I believe at this point this basically where all of us are at!

Yes. I didn’t mean to compare the two, aside from what I would have as financial priority.
That said, I think Zel’s future is at PG… and I think he could be great.
That said… I had my reservations about Walt at pg, so take my opinion with a grain of salt!

OR...we trust the head coach who just won the NC with a bunch of "nobodies", so say the "experts".

Yes, we can all be robots. Or we can default to what makes the most sense.

Everyone has a choice. And if I may opine...again...about what I think is the mindset of the regular fan on this forum:

Has anyone heard anything about where Denzel might be headed? Is UF still working to retain him or has that ship sailed?

Now. I have no inside scoop, but also have little doubt that poaching is in play. The Aberdeen situation might be one such case.
