Job 1: 21 "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Said it earlier in this thread. Some days you eat the bear; some days the bear eats you.
I think your post is fair....but i seriously doubt he the difference in NIL he gets is life changing. More for sure, but over a lifetime probably not a huge impact. Admittedly tough for a college kid to discern
Yes agreed, if he’s spending the $500k over a lifetime, but not true at all if he invests it. Actually, “over a lifetime” is exactly where the HUGE impact is made. If he gets himself a $500,000 bump (not a million, but $500,000), now, at age 21, and puts it in a conservative mutual fund Roth IRA, forgets it, makes nice money playing ball in Europe for a bit, comes home and opens/buys himself any kinda small business, or goes to work for somebody, lives a nice middle class life, never invests another nickel, gets a very conservative, below average 6% return on that $500,000 he has working for him, he’ll have himself $7 million tax free dollars when he’s 66. “Admittedly tough for a college kid to discern” but somehow I figured it out, on my own, and with a LOT, LOT, LOT less than $500,000, and a lot less than $7 million, but truly a lifesaver nevertheless. Or just buy himself and pay cash for a house. A paid off house sure can make a lifetime a lot easier, and real estate appreciates, makes you rich 45 years later. Getting a $500k bump (and that’s above whatever NIL number he’d be getting) at age 21 would be life changing.
I feel the same. As I said… it didn’t feel like a portal team, as even our transfer players were mostly returnees and multi-year gators. And the only guy who wasn’t …. Martin… was a player whose career I followed as a season ticket holder at FAU. So yeah- I too loved this team, its construct and continuity.
Now, all that said, didn’t one bit like that “we scored 44 points!” at TN when they were missing 2 starters game. I mean really, wtf was that about?
Let's not forget more than a third of that bump goes to taxes, and probably another 10% to an agent. That 500k turns into 250k awful quick. And that's assuming the bump is 500k, which is certainly feasible but not certain
Other side of the equation is 3 of our top 6 scorers were HS signees, and 5 of them were returnees from last year. NIL/portal helped, but it has helped everyone. What made this team both different and successful was its uncustomary roster construction. In slightly different ways, applied to Duke, Houston, and Auburn, as well.
He’s got three years of eligibility left. He looks like a good prospect. Jaleel Lord College Stats | College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com
Not apples to apples in the achievement department, but this feel like Pyburn in football. Sucks. At least we have Golden the mad scientist that knows how to navigate this new environment. We’ll be fine.
We had lightning in a bottle this year. Cherish it! I know I will. TG has the chops to do it again, but this environment is so unstable that it requires a bit of luck.
I'm just going to convince myself that Aberdeen graduated like the rest of the guards since he's been here 3 years already.
This^ Why is it some people here at GC are saying Denzel is being selfish? Aren’t the bigs doing the same thing? They are just trying to do what's best for them financially wise. Anybody here that have that opportunity would do the same thing. Anyone that says he'll be loyal to the end is lying. The NCAA created this sh_t. That's the entity you should blame.
I think the problem is a lot of schools probably see “incoming transfer from the National Champions” as a sort of trophy to add to their roster. It’s called a free market, but it isn’t necessarily rational to engage in the bidding when the bidders are not necessarily rational and not in it for any type of long term ROI. They may just want their trophy, which means willing to pay a far higher price. Of course if you are a player and suddenly a bunch of “dumb money” comes at you it’s understandable at some point you can’t turn it down.
He is a Florida kid who stuck it out and helped bring us a championship. No matter where he ends up playing next year, he's already a legend. Even if he doesn't end up with a long pro career , his connection to Florida alumns will guarantee him a good job, in or outside of sports after his playing days are done.
