AOC has many of the same faults as Trump: tribal attitude, high confidence in their own opinion, and the belief that blunt government actions can solve complex societal issues. If she were to be elected, it would precipitate a category 5 collective whiplash, as each side suddenly did an about face on each of this issues.
I remain a “double hater” that the WSJ placed me in with 18% of my fellow Americans. She would be a disaster, just like Trump. Just give me Clinton (Bill) or a Bush family member so things can be normal again.
If our country isn't irreparably broken by 2028, the next President will, along with Congress, have to reshape roles and laws in ways we cannot yet see. It is pointless to speculate right now about any candidates; there will be no "I alone can fix it." What Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez are doing now is engaging the public to participate in democracy. We will need more grass roots participation to reshape what is being dismantled.
That's kind of a ridiculous assessment TBH, I feel like most people's impressions are colored by their media diet, and you dont appear different on this matter.
We'll never know. She'll never win the election. Dems really can't find someone more center to get us out of this mess?
This is what people are going to have to contend with - the next president will either have to manage the post-Trump wreckage and whatever type of America that produces (gutted government agencies, hostile courts, broken international relations, a tariff regime, an outsourced immigration gulag, a militarized border, an economy more prone to scamming, fraud and manipulation, etc) or they are going to have to rebuild and move forward an alternative vision of the future, which will take bold action, and will look similar to many of the things Trump is doing to push the limits of the law. More than likely the courts will be less forgiving to non-Republicans. There will be tests to their power ... how will they respond? Grass roots participation is essential to democratizing the US.
Yeah, if only they ran the person who spent the campaign sitting on stage with Republicans like Liz Cheney talking about opportunity zones and her love of guns. The reality is that people on the other side will always talk themselves into why somebody isn't really "centrist."
From the polling I've seen Harris is generally the "top choice" ... whatever that means at this stage. AOC is behind her, by quite a bit (its not neck and neck). Walz is up there too. I think a lot of this is name ID at this stage TBH. Pritzker isnt a HH name, and is way down on the list. But he's clearly positioning himself as a candidate, with much more savvy than Newsome, who more people are probably familiar with.
I wouldn't use the Democrats 2024 race for an example of anything except as probably the worst run political race in US history. Obama would have had a hard time winning in 24 the way it was handled. Harris was set up for failure from day 1.
Until people define what that actually means concretely, then no. Whoever the Democrats produce as a nominee will always be "too liberal" for lots of the media and people that will vote for them under no circumstances. Gavin Newsome is hanging out with Steven Bannon and Charlie Kirk and throwing trans people under the bus, and he'll be called a radical communist if he is the nominee. The Democrats just need to find someone good at politics, not someone who uses polling to determine their stances on whatever is in the news.
Besides being an extreme socialist, she's one of the stupidest members in the history of congress. It's so bad I thought it was AI or a spoof... Nope-100% her.
Admittedly, I don’t personally know AOC or Trump, so indeed all of my impressions of both would indeed be mediated by the media. Perhaps my views on both as politicians are ridiculous. PS I’m not saying AOC is the same as Trump. They are clearly very different people.
Okay, how about 2016? Or 2000? Basically, any loss that they have. These are pretty centrist candidates that Republicans have convinced themselves are crazy left-wingers. You can actually make a pretty good argument that 6 of the last 7 elections have been won by the less "centrist" candidate (I'd probably put it at 4-5, but that is very on the margin). Basically, only 2020 was definitely won by the "centrist."
Polling is meaningless at this stage. At the same point prior to their eventual victories, Obama and Trump weren't even being polled as potential candidates.
AOC is just a member of congress. I think she is well liked among Democrats because she does things most Democrats like, she studies issues and asks detailed and smart questions when given the opportunity, she plays ball with the party rather than throwing bombs, does the work and is an excellent communicator. From a left perspective, despite her background, she is probably more popular with normie Dems now than DSA people who are skeptical of the Democratic party. I feel like if you canvased normie Dem wine moms and the DSA International caucus, the people saying things like you or calling her a sell-out will be those further left. She's done well to position herself within the Democratic mainstream, if that sort of thing matters. Much of the party is already where she is at (and she has taken some absolute dogshit votes for someone who's is portrayed as a purist of some kind). Donald Trump shaped the party to his image, she's sort of done the opposite.
I like how Trumpers always trash Democrat candidates who think they are dumb or unqualified while unanimously supporting the biggest dipshit and unqualified individual to ever hold office. Trump has the intelligence of a baked potato, he’s mind numbingly moronic.
Do we need to post a compilation of all the absolutely idiotic stuff Trump had said and done over the years? The same guy who thought stealth fighters were literally invisible and stared directly at a solar eclipse? The party of “common sense” indeed.
I couldn't care less. Your TDS is your problem. The thread is about ocasio and I've just pointed out that she's an extreme leftist socialist and dumber than a box of bidens.
