Sorry, but this is not any more true for him than for Clayton, Martin, Richard, whoever. You can hate him all you want, but the staff absolutely loved him. They benched Kugel for him. They gave him huge opportunities on big stages. They made him the poster boy for HS recruiting and development in their program. Any argument against his performance is clear revisionism.
I'd like to see one of the contracts you're talking about and what incentives you mean. I don't think they'll be allowed to enforce their restrictions on what deals are allowed to be made. The courts have already said the colleges will not be allowed to limit the athletes ability to bring in money. Any attempt to restrict the flow is going to be shot down immediately. If you or I want to pay someone ten million to come to our nieces birthday, the courts will say that's our right. Nothing the NCAA can do about it.
Possibly, but it does support the arguement that he's more about himself than the team. I understand that he needs to take care of himself, but if he truly believed in himself, he fight for his expanded role on the team.
If he really is going from 1MM at UF to 2MM somewhere else, I blame him 0.0% for leaving. He has a ring and great friends and memories. Now he can take a big step towards setting himself up for life. Plus, his three G teammates are gone. Honestly, if our team didn't love UF and playing together so much, they'd probably all transfer and double their income.
He must have gotten an offer you can’t refuse. He wants to be a Gator loves UF. Sometimes you have to make a decision not based in love. Everyone has a price. I wish him well.
This is crazy talk, IMO. Did you watch the games? Without Denzel, Florida would not have won as many and may not have another national championship. Any selfish player would have blown-up the chemistry that team had. Denzel did what he was asked and what was needed.
While I am grateful for winning a championship in basketball with a mix of recruits and portal players, I’m really turned off by the state of college athletics. I am to the point where I’m going to find other things to do than devote the time to drive to attend football and basketball games. Thanks for screwing it all up NCAA!
I believe he played very well for us and he played a lot of minutes. We used 5 guards in a game. I guess we will have to find 2 more in the portal. But he wasn't great at foul shoots during the last few minutes of the game. The game against Houston he made only 1 of 2, for example. But he was a very valuable player for us and without him maybe we wouldn't have won.
The colleges had a chance to get out in front of this. They chose to sit on their hands and this is what they got for it. I would love to see it reined in, I just don't see how. Not in it's current state. You'll still have mercenaries under a real employment model, just like you do in the big leagues, but at least you'd have the ability to negotiate some type of guardrails. What they're doing now with individual lawsuit after individual lawsuit is never going to solve anything for the group as a whole.
Believe me, they were being approached (or poached) while the season and tournament were ongoing. I know UcheaT had made their deal with Gillespie right before Maryland got beat by Florida. It's epidemic and totally out-of-control.
I don’t think Zel is running from competition. And, as rserina alluded to… very well liked and appreciated by teammates and coaches.
