An American citizen was held in a Florida jail at the request of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) despite the county judge being able to see a U.S. birth certificate in court. Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, who was born in the United States, was detained Wednesday in Florida by the state’s highway patrol and was charged with illegally entering the Sunshine State as an “unauthorized alien” under a state law that has been temporarily blocked by a judge, the Florida Phoenix news outlet reported Thursday. I'm glad he was released. I'm Olive skinned and have been mistaken for being Mexican or South American before. I guess I better start carrying my papers.
If ICE was remotely competent he would have never been detained and scheduled for potential deportation in the first place.
